Background / History
Ancient Origins
Legend describes Ancient Ruins Mountain as a dwelling place of the gods during the Primordial Epoch and the site from which they ascended to the Divine Realm. These accounts place it before the creation of the Douluo Continent, following an ancient age of warring Hundred Clans 115.
Its later-revealed function is less benevolent: Xiao Lu identifies it as a cage that suppresses the remnant souls of dead gods, who continue searching for suitable successors 154.
The Previous Opening
A century before Zhao Su’s expedition, Tang Chen, Qian Daoliu, and Jian Feng entered Ancient Ruins Mountain together. Jian Feng discovered the Ancient Barbarian God’s remnant soul, sealed it rather than accepting its inheritance, and hid the Barbarian King Hammer on Barbarian King Mountain. Tang Chen and Qian Daoliu subsequently ambushed him, forcing him to break through the boundary back to the Douluo Continent at the cost of severe injuries 157.
Jian Feng also found the Ancient Sword God’s remnant soul. His discoveries eventually provided Chen Xin with an inheritance opportunity during the next opening 154 157.
Zi Zhenzhu entered during the same century-old opening with her teacher, Qian Daoliu. He sacrificed her soul to obtain the Angel God’s inheritance. When the Angel God came under attack, Zi Zhenzhu escaped with part of her soul and remained dormant on Pearl Island until ten years before Zhao Su’s arrival 131.
Geography and Notable Locations
Despite its name, Ancient Ruins Mountain contains primeval forests, cities, mountains, valleys, and extensive sea territories. It is smaller than the Douluo Continent, but travel from its northern region to its eastern region still takes approximately a month on a swift horse 136 158.
| Location | Description and Significance |
|---|---|
| Longxing City | Contains the Xuanyuan Family compound at its easternmost edge; the compound becomes the target of a Myriad Sword Sect assault 136. |
| Divination Mountain | The Divine Hall’s secluded seat, bordering the North Sea. Its territory offers protection that does not extend to those still outside its boundary 138 140. |
| Northern Sea Waters | Site of a sky-reaching waterfall associated with the realm’s reopening. Water circulates between sea and sky, becoming mirror-like in calm conditions and violent when waves rise 171. |
| Myriad Sacred Dragon Palace | The dominant maritime power’s seat. The permanent gateway forms nearby on the Ancient Ruins Mountain side 136 182. |
| Death Valley | Contains a cave leading to a vast lava cavern. A sealed sword spirit rests above a central platform in a roughly thirty-meter-wide lava pool 152 154. |
| Barbarian King Mountain | Located in the east. Its sparse vegetation gives way to cold stones with a faint black glow; it houses the Barbarian King Hammer and attracts the Xuanyuan Sword 157 158 161 164. |
Entrances and Travel
Opening Cycle
- Ordinary interval: Ancient Ruins Mountain is said to open once every hundred years. Its announced opening draws disciples, unaffiliated cultivators, and secluded Titled Douluos seeking opportunities 116 127.
- Changing entrance: Each opening appears at a different location, and searches of former entrance sites yield no clues. Zi Zhenzhu explains that this shifting location is intended to mislead people rather than indicate that the realm itself moves 116 132.
- Alternative entry: According to Zi Zhenzhu, sufficiently powerful individuals can open a gateway at the Douluo Continent’s edge because the two realms are fully connected 132.
- Unreliable directions: Spirit Hall initially reports that entry requires passing through Sea God Island. Zhao Su later questions this intelligence, and his party prepares an entrance on Pearl Island instead 116 129 132.
Gateway Mechanics
| Gateway or Passage | Effects and Conditions |
|---|---|
| Pearl Island entrance | Opening it turns the entire island into a teleportation array and draws everyone remaining there into Ancient Ruins Mountain. The island’s survivors are evacuated before Zhao Su’s party proceeds 132. |
| Boundary passage | Divine sense suppresses entrants’ Soul Power and scatters them, preventing powerful groups from arriving together 133. |
| Escaped Evil Soul Masters’ breaches | The gods’ Enforcers discover and seal these breaches after escapes, preventing others from simply reusing them 132. |
| Permanent Spatial Gate | Forms between Pearl Island and the area near the Myriad Sacred Dragon Palace. It has no time limit, but travelers must withstand the black vortex’s force 182. |
Cultivation Rules and Divine Control
Soul Power Suppression
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial cap | Entrants are suppressed to the strength of a level 70 Soul Saint 133. |
| Native inhabitants | The restriction also affects natives; Wang Hong’s actual level is 83, despite his suppressed strength 135. |
| Duration | Whenever the realm opens, the gods’ pressure descends for two years 135. |
| Advancement under pressure | Exceptionally gifted cultivators can increase their Soul Power despite the restriction, though doing so is extremely difficult. Zhao Su recognizes the pressure as a means of cultivating beyond ordinary limits 135. |
| Resisting entry effects | Zi Zhenzhu states that overcoming the passage’s suppression and scattering requires divine sense stronger than the combined divine sense of the Union of the Gods 133. |
| Documented breakthrough | Qian Renxue surpasses the restriction and reaches level 80 while undertaking the Nine Divine Trials 152. |
| End of suppression | When the permanent gateway forms and the three thousand Great Dao gradually become complete, the Will of the Gods’ suppressive effect stops functioning 182. |
Hunting and Soul Harvesting
Zi Zhenzhu’s account identifies several purposes behind the openings:
- Sustaining the gods: Gods weakened by depleted vitality absorb Soul Masters’ souls to preserve their power and prolong their existence 132.
- Training divine descendants: Visiting Soul Masters serve as prey against whom the gods’ descendants test themselves 132.
- Creating puppets: Exceptional survivors may receive tremendous power while becoming vessels through which the gods manipulate the Douluo Continent 132.
- Producing escapees: Some descendants of earlier visitors escape as Evil Soul Masters. These descendants are themselves hunted within Ancient Ruins Mountain 132.
Law and Enforcement
- Cities have no general law-enforcement system. Powerful resident sects or families establish rules in some settlements, but most places operate through force alone 136.
- Divine Enforcers seal unauthorized breaches, while the Six Divine Sons are described as guardians who kill those who disobey the realm’s rules 132 171.
- Hostility toward outsiders is widespread but not universal. The Divine Hall rarely participates in hunting them unless attacked 138.
Major Powers
Ancient Ruins Mountain has seven great sects, divided into the Upper Three Sects and Lower Four Sects, alongside the maritime Myriad Sacred Dragon Palace 136.
| Power | Leadership or Traits | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Buddhist School | One of the Upper Three Sects; inherits Buddha-Shadow Arhat martial souls. Its Buddha Lord possesses a Buddha-Shadow Venerable with a hundred-foot golden body 136. | Participates in the joint kill order against Zhao Su 138 141. |
| Dao Sect | One of the Upper Three Sects; its Primordial Eight Trigrams Diagram resonates with the Heavenly Dao and draws on natural power 136. | Joins the kill order; its third-generation disciples include the Dao Sect Twin Stars 138 153. |
| Divine Hall | Led by level 99 Peerless Douluo Shanggu Jiran. Its Sacred Qimen Dunjia Compass provides support and divination abilities 136 138. | Shelters Ning Rongrong, who becomes its holy maiden and Shanggu Jiran’s adopted daughter. The Sea God nevertheless forces its participation in the kill order 138 141. |
| Myriad Sacred Dragon Palace | Maritime overlord led by Xi Yao, whose martial soul is an Ancient White Dragon 136. | Protects sea folk and supplies resources for Zhao Su’s search for missing companions 183. |
| Xuanyuan Family | A declining native family associated with the Xuanyuan Sword and inherited fortune energy 135 136 137. | Receives Zhao Su’s assistance against the Myriad Sword Sect 136 138. |
| Myriad Sword Sect | Led during the assault by Wang Changsheng, who seeks the Xuanyuan Family’s divine sword 136 137. | Hopes the sword’s divine will and fortune will elevate it into the Upper Three Sects 137. |
| Myriad Poisons Sect | Brought under Tang San’s control through his hidden weapons and Mysterious Heaven Skill 139. | Assassinates outsiders as Tang San attempts to monopolize the realm’s opportunities 139. |
| Illusory Sound Sect | Associated with its red-clad holy maiden, Blue Moon 171. | Appears among the factions gathered in the Northern Sea Waters 171. |
The Six Divine Sons are descendants left in Ancient Ruins Mountain by Divine Realm gods. Their placement is not always an honor: some are abandoned or exiled, while Li Zheng comes voluntarily to train. After Shen Fan’s death, the remaining five are Qian Yao’er, Li Zheng, A Xing, and the unnamed descendants of the Fire God and God of Forging 171.
Story Role / Major Events
| Event | Significance |

| Joint kill order | The Upper Three Sects circulate Zhao Su’s portrait and offer an elder’s position and two Soul Bones for his death. The Sea God is revealed to have coerced Shanggu Jiran into joining 138 141. |
| Conflict with Tang San | Tang San’s campaign against outsiders includes killing Zhang Ping after an escape agreement with her group, cementing Zhao Su’s opposition to him 139 146. |

| Permanent connection and departure | The Spatial Gate becomes permanent and suppression ends. Zhao Su leaves for the Douluo Continent with his companions inside his spatial storage device, while Xi Yao remains to protect the sea folk 182 183. |
| Missing companions’ whereabouts | Zhao Su’s extensive search finds no trace of Bibi Dong or Tang Yuehua within the realm. They later return from the Sun Moon Continent with Xie Yue 183 185. |
