Background / History

Xiao Yan arrives on the Douluo Continent after sealing Hun Tiandi. Initially, he remembers only his life before transmigrating to the Dou Qi Continent, retaining a vague awareness of Blue Star but forgetting his experiences in his previous cultivation world. His martial soul awakening begins restoring fragments of those memories 2 5.

His rebirth differs from Tang San’s possession of Tang Hao’s newborn son. Xiao Yan’s body is nurtured by the Emperor Flame, which enters Ah Yin’s womb as a ball of light while she is giving birth. He brings his own bloodline and soul with him and shares no blood relationship with Tang Hao or Tang San, although he remains unaware of this for much of the story 87 150.

Raised as Tang San’s elder twin in Holy Soul Village, Xiao Yan lives in poverty under Tang Hao’s neglect. The brothers cook from the age of four, and Old Jack’s assistance helps keep them from starving. Tang Hao’s drinking, inadequate food, and later mistreatment lead Xiao Yan to reject both his paternal authority and the name “Tang Yan,” privately adopting “Xiao Yan” instead 2 11 119.

Appearance

  • Face and eyes: Delicate features in childhood; later described as handsome, with dark eyes 2 86.
  • Build: Initially resembles Tang San closely enough in height and build to be mistaken for him from behind. Later passages describe a sturdy, slightly dark-skinned torso 81 95.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears black robes 51 215 245.
  • Recognizable silhouette: Carries an unusually large black ruler, almost longer than he is tall 55.
  • Disguises: Uses a thin human-skin mask as Yan Xiao and also appears in a cross-dressed, veiled disguise 86 91.
  • Technique-related changes: Purple Cloud Wings form behind his back; his eyes turn silver when using Three Thousand Thunder 51 203.

Personality

Xiao Yan rejects the idea that blood ties automatically create affection or obedience. To him, respect and love must be earned through care and shared experience. This belief underlies his refusal to acknowledge Tang Hao as a father and his repeated clashes with Tang San’s unconditional loyalty to parents and teachers 3 12 87.

He distinguishes wrongdoing from outright enmity. When Nuoding Academy’s gatekeeper insults Old Jack and the village, Xiao Yan considers punishment and reconciliation sufficient rather than killing him. His stated standard is that wrongdoers can be taught, while enemies who cross his bottom line must be eliminated 13.

He is cautious about revealing his strengths, concealing his second martial soul from Tang Hao and remaining alert to Tang San’s hidden weapons. He also studies the local cultivation system instead of accepting established theories without examination 10 14 17 28.

His treatment of allies and dependents can be gentle and generous: he offers to refine pills for Xiao Xiao, heals Di Tian, and later distributes cultivation pills to Holy Soul Village. Against established enemies, however, he becomes ruthless—concealing poison in Flender’s pills, erasing a Divine Official’s consciousness, and threatening to turn Tang San into a puppet 109 215 290 305 359 381.

Abilities & Skills

Emperor Flame and Heavenly Flame Ring Fusion

The Emperor Flame is Xiao Yan’s flame martial soul. It initially appears as a multicolored Fire Lotus that can change into a flame at his will 5 23.

  • Self-formed soul rings: Refines heavenly flames and fuses them with his soul power, providing an alternative to obtaining every ring by hunting soul beasts 25 46 55.
  • Ring-age limit: A fused ring’s age depends on the greatest intensity his body can withstand 46.
  • Level requirement: Refining the Life Spirit Flame at level thirty-nine does not immediately allow him to condense another ring 99.
  • Energy refinement: His flames temper incoming world energy, improving its refinement but greatly increasing the amount needed for advancement 272.
  • Cultivation research: Concludes that soul rings function as external energy-storage mediums and questions whether cultivation alone could create them 28.

Heavenly Flames

Flame Documented applications
Green Lotus Core Flame Purges the Mandala Snake’s venom from Grandmaster, burns through Blue Silver Grass restraints, and strengthens close-combat attacks 28 42 86.
Myriad Beast Spirit Flame Produces heart flames inside beasts, scorching their souls and weakening their combat ability. Against the Ghost Tiger, it exposes the soul for a lethal follow-up attack 47 57 58.
Life Spirit Flame Refined while Xiao Yan is level thirty-nine; its possession is noted during his medicinal-formula experiments 99 101.
Three Thousand Burning Flame Refining it produces his hundred-thousand-year sixth ring and grants four Dou Techniques 236.
Bone Spirit Cold Flame Refining it grants the Heavenly Demon Puppet creation method and Great Heaven Creation Palm 289.
Fallen Heart Flame Burns soul bodies, destroys the soul-powered figure in Tang San’s formation, and seals Tang San’s captured soul inside a bottle 357 359.
Purifying Lotus Demon Flame Initially traps him in Nightmare Sky Mist through a false modern-world examination. Later, he wields it against Divine Realm experts and Tang San’s Asura powers 335 368.
  • Flame suppression: His emerald-green flame causes Blazing Fire Academy’s surrounding flames to bow toward it 164.
  • Poison resistance: Heavenly flames burn away Dugu Bo’s poison during their confrontation 97.
  • Limits against beast souls: Early Myriad Beast heart flames cannot immediately incinerate hundred-year scorpion souls, though they can disrupt the beasts’ coordination 47.

Eight Extremes Collapse

A close-combat Dou Technique whose perfected strikes contain eight stacked layers of hidden force 25.

  • Masters six hidden-force layers during his early years of cultivation, allowing delayed internal force to catch opponents off guard 55.
  • Combines the technique with heavenly flames against soul beasts and human opponents 28 57 124.
  • Remains usable in the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger’s Life and Death Arena, despite the loss of most of his soul power and soul-ring abilities 288.
  • At god-level strength, shatters Tang San’s merged Sea God Trident form and later his Asura God Armor 357 368.

Movement and Flight

  • Explosive Step: Uses explosions of energy beneath his feet for sudden acceleration. It is a mid-level Xuan-class movement Dou Technique, used less frequently after he obtains Three Thousand Lightning Movement 25 42 268.
  • Purple Cloud Wings: Forms purple wings for flight. Sustained use consumes considerable soul power, and flying openly above soul-beast territory risks attracting attacks 46 51 56.
  • Three Thousand Lightning Movement: Draws on wind and lightning and has three stages—Thunder Flash, Thunder Instant, and Three Thousand Thunder. It enables rapid evasions, brief suspension in midair, and movement resembling instantaneous displacement 99 101 268.
  • Three Thousand Thunder: Produces two silver figures identical to Xiao Yan during his battle against Shrek 203.

Palm and Seal Techniques

  • Suction Palm: Pulls objects or opponents toward him. After refining another heavenly flame, Xiao Yan estimates that his suction can manipulate an object weighing a thousand catties 25 50 118.
  • Blowing Flame Palm: Releases powerful forward wind pressure, allowing him to repel Tang San’s hidden weapons back toward their thrower 46 50 52.
  • Great Heaven Creation Palm: Acquired after refining the Bone Spirit Cold Flame; used to kill a Divine Official 289 290.
  • Emperor Seal Art: Used in his confrontation with Di Tian 239.
  • Stacked seals: Combines the Mountain Splitting Seal, Sea Overturning Seal, and Earth-Covering Seal after taking a Soul Devouring Pill 332.
  • Sea Overturning Seal: Creates an enormous energy handprint that meets Bibi Dong’s Space-Rending Abyss Slash 309.

Ruler Techniques

  • Six Harmonies Wandering Body Ruler: Connects successive ruler movements with few openings, combining offense and defense. Xiao Yan uses it to deflect Tang San’s Clear Sky Hammer attacks 140 182.
  • Flame Splitting Wave Ruler: Channels energy into a powerful ruler strike. He uses it against Tang San and within the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger’s age-reducing arena 99 182 288.
  • Martial soul clash: With temporary avatar-level strength, his Heavy Xuan Ruler shatters Tang San’s Clear Sky True Body in one strike 204.

Defensive Techniques

  • Heavenly Flames Armor / Azure Flame Armor: Protects him from Shrek’s coordinated assault and Tang San’s Frost Prison; the flames melt the prison while he emerges unharmed 147.
  • Dark Gold True Body: Allows him to catch Tang San’s hidden weapons during their Great Soul Arena confrontation 86.
  • Dark Gold Dreadclaw Right Palm Bone: Alters the structure of his hand, producing dark-gold bones and blade-like changes to his fingers 59.
  • Mental resistance: Xiao Wu’s Charm rebounds against him and knocks her unconscious 91.

Heavenly Fire Three Mysterious Transformations

A three-stage secret art that releases the energy of his heavenly flames to temporarily increase his strength 140.

  • The named Myriad Beasts Transformation is its second transformation 150.
  • Can create illusory soul rings and elevate him to Martial Soul Avatar-level power before his permanent Soul Saint advancement 150 204.
  • Raises his soul power to level ninety-eight after he becomes a Soul Saint 289.
  • Cost: Its violent energy damages his meridians and body, leaving him weakened after the technique ends 140.

Fire Lotuses and Fire Lotus Bottles

  • Three-Colored Fire Lotus: Fuses three heavenly flames into a destructive attack. Xiao Yan uses it against pill lightning and the Three Thousand Burning Flame 185 230.
  • Fire Lotus Bottles: Stores small fire lotuses in jade bottles for explosive attacks. They can obstruct Titled Douluo attacks even when insufficient to inflict serious injury 189.
  • Large-scale destruction: His Three-Colored Fire Lotus strike against the Three Thousand Burning Flame collapses Hell Road 230.

Spiritual Power, Soul Control, and Puppet Refinement

  • Perception: Detects nearby presences through the ground and locates weaker soul beasts through soul perception 23 56.
  • Alchemy support: His immense soul strength assists precise pill refinement and formula development 105.
  • Soul interrogation: Extracts a Divine Official’s soul, forces it to reveal information, and erases its consciousness before puppet refinement 290.
  • Heavenly Demon Puppet creation: Refines the official’s corpse, soul, metals, and a core pearl into the puppet Hun Dan 290.
  • Heaven-Refining Nightmare: Directs the Fire Infant Xiao Yi to release pink mist during his public exposure of Tang San’s origins 354.
  • Soul extraction: Tears Tang San’s soul out of his body after it has fused with Luo Sanpao 375.

Alchemy and Medicine

Xiao Yan develops local pill formulas through repeated experiments with the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well’s medicinal ingredients. Low-grade herbs initially restrict the quality of his products, but his pills introduce a previously absent cultivation resource to the continent 101 105.

Yin-Yang Profound Dragon Pill Refined with rare herbs and the Ice and Fire Dragon Kings’ cores; summons powerful pill lightning and attracts Divine Realm attention 185.

Dragon Strength Pill Given to Dugu Bo so he can hold off one of the Seven Deadly Sins Gods 332.
Soul Devouring Pill Refined from the souls of Spirit Hall’s Titled Douluo and consumed before Xiao Yan prepares three stacked seals 332.
  • Poison diagnosis: Suggests that Dugu Bo’s inherited illness comes from soul-ring poison rather than his martial soul. This remains a proposed explanation in their discussion, not an established diagnosis 97.
  • Treatment options: Describes a soul bone as a temporary solution and a heavenly flame as a risky cure for Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan 97.
  • Revival: Revives Ah Yin and later resurrects Tang San through a special method at her request, leaving him unable to cultivate 349 381.

  • Tang Hao — His nominal father. Neglect, abuse, and attempts to use him against Spirit Hall lead Xiao Yan to reject him. Xiao Yan initially tolerates him because he mistakenly believes they are blood relatives, then refuses his attempt at reconciliation 2 11 94 150 185.
  • Ah Yin — The woman through whom he is reborn. After reviving her and learning the truth, Xiao Yan still accepts her as his mother because she brought him into the world 87 349.

  • Qian Renxue — Companion who accompanies him at tournament events and later uses a Fire Lotus Bottle he supplied 173 337.

  • Despite having different bloodlines, Xiao Yan and Tang San possess slightly similar auras because both were born through Ah Yin 116.
