Background / History
Origins and Former Wielders
The Time Mirror describes itself as a naturally born treasure that initially possessed no grade and advanced gradually. Luo Yan later discovers that its arts match the laws of the true River of Time almost exactly, leading him to identify the river as its birthplace 180. The Lord of Time ultimately reveals a more specific origin: the mirror was formed through his conviction and represented his other side, serving his attempt to escape the fate of the river 285.
One former master was a True Immortal who traveled into another spacetime and was killed by a powerful being there. His body remained in that era, while the River of Time scoured away his divine soul, preventing revival. The mirror recalls being battered into its broken state during the same incident 49. It later explains that repeated temporal crossings had marked that master in spacetime 259.
The mirror also once commanded the Time Church. Its members betrayed it, and its current leader was a former wielder whom it identified as the only surviving person who had previously used it 169. That leader was revealed to be the Red King, who had severed his memories to break his earlier karmic connection 191.
The Luo Family’s Misunderstanding
Luo Family accounts claimed that their ancestor forged the Time Mirror as his life-bound treasure in the Dragon Transformation Secret Realm. Those accounts credited it with allowing him, at tremendous cost, to return to the past and kill opponents in their youth 4.
Luo Yan initially interpreted the shattered weapon as the result of an unsuccessful attempt to forge an Emperor Weapon without attaining the Dao 5. Examining the original owner’s life later overturned that explanation: the ancestor had found an incomplete Immortal Artifact rather than forged it. The mirror enabled his mastery of time, but its backlash eventually shortened his lifespan, and he died before repairing it 28.
Repair and the Tianxuan Era
After receiving the fragments from the Luo Family, Luo Yan reassembled the mirror and entered the River of Time to obtain the origin needed for its repair. Although he secured a portion, the mirror became dormant during a time surge, leaving him stranded six thousand years in the past 5 6.
Its retrospective projections became useful within Tianxuan Holy Land. Wei Yi and Little Madman used it to investigate the stolen Ten-Thousand-Face Flower; Luo Yan later replayed the theft for the Tianxuan Saintess and traced Duan De’s escape route 8 10 12. He also showed her a stored image of the holy land’s future ruins as a warning against attacking a forbidden zone 17.
The Ji Family subsequently sought to study the Time Mirror while developing a Little Void Mirror replica. Luo Yan agreed on the condition that he could study their Void Mirror in exchange 28.
Awakening and Conflict with Luo Yan
During Luo Yan’s journey to eighteen thousand years in the past, the mirror required more than three hundred years to recover enough to awaken its consciousness 49. Alarmed by the Immortal Domain’s disappearance, it covertly attempted to reclaim control of its body. Luo Yan immediately suppressed it 50.
He considered erasing its consciousness but stopped when it warned that doing so could lower its grade and destroy its temporal-travel ability. Fearful of death, the mirror then helped him refine it completely 50 51. Their partnership continued, but its concealed actions and selective disclosures repeatedly renewed his suspicions 248 259 261.
The Empress and the Immortal Domain
At Kunlun, Luo Yan used the mirror to reveal the youth preserved in a broken Ghost Face Mask and accepted his request to care for his younger sister 31. The mirror later requested a keepsake from the Ruthless Great Emperor to locate her brother’s distant era accurately; she supplied her Ghost Face Mask 59.
While helping the Female Emperor, the mirror suffered fresh damage to its true body and revealed that its repairs depended on Luo Yan’s life. It identified an Immortal Domain fragment as a possible refuge and asked Luo Yan to retrieve them when the road opened 121. It also warned him that only the true Immortal Domain possessed sufficiently complete laws for his genuine True Immortal tribulation 140.
Higher Recovery and Dao Transformation
After its time with the Mystic Emperor, the mirror concealed its recovery to Immortal King grade and its subsequent absorption of Wushi’s time law. Luo Yan eventually discovered that it had reached half-step Quasi-Immortal Emperor power 248.
It helped Luo Yan resist the Lord of Wantuo Mountain, but later suffered devastating origin damage while shouldering temporal karma during a tribulation 258 260. Their bodies fused, leaving the mirror’s consciousness unable to enter the inner space occupied by the Lord of Time’s giant tree 261.
Luo Yan subsequently studied the Weapon-Control Dao and spent a hundred years harmonizing their powers 271. During his later battle with the Luo Family Ancestor, the mirror transformed alongside him into a Yin-Yang Millstone. It welcomed the change as a chance to stop being a pawn of the Great Dao of Time 275.
Appearance and Forms
- Damaged mirror: Densely covered in cracks, appearing liable to collapse into fragments at a touch. During Little Madman’s inspection, it emitted neither magical-power fluctuations nor a Dao aura 8.
- Restored surface: Gleams like a divine treasure, with ancient characters, mysterious Dao Patterns, and temporal arts inscribed upon it 102.
- Deceptive damage: Even while looking battered, its body can be seamlessly whole and exceptionally hard 50.
- Variable form: Has no fixed true shape. Documented manifestations include a boat, a Time Sword, and a Yin-Yang Millstone 102 242 272 275.
- Consciousness avatar: Appears as a hazy ball of light, a small figure, or a blurry humanoid projection 54 261 264.
Personality
The Time Mirror combines arrogance, mischief, and a powerful instinct for self-preservation. It boasts about its antiquity and experience, encourages violence when Luo Yan can absorb the consequences, and enjoys making troublesome situations worse 116 267. When confronted by superior power, it abruptly becomes flattering and submissive 59 264 268.
Its loyalty is unreliable rather than wholly absent. It attempts to regain control, conceals its advancement, and withholds crucial warnings, yet also protects Luo Yan and assists his transformations 50 248 259 260 275. By its Dao transformation, it expresses a genuine desire to escape its assigned role as a pawn and establish an independent existence 275.
Abilities & Skills
Temporal Travel and Protection
The mirror serves as Luo Yan’s means of entering and navigating the River of Time 5 50.
- Releases temporal laws and light to resist the river’s erosion and protect its wielder from time surges 5.
- Becomes a boat for journeys upstream or toward the future 102 242.
- Uses keepsakes to pinpoint distant people and eras more accurately 59.
- Requires Luo Yan’s deep affinity with time and their inseparable bond; other cultivators cannot necessarily wield it as freely 59.
- Can require centuries of recovery after a crossing and may be suppressed by an unfamiliar era’s myriad Daos 49.
- Cannot safely overcome every obstruction: enduring sword light at the severed river’s boundary forces it to stop 103.
Retrospection and Observation
The mirror reveals events across time and observes distant locations.
- Replays a place’s past in detail, including events from three days earlier 8.
- Reconstructs thefts and traces an escape route 12.
- Reviews the original Luo Yan’s entire life, exposing the mirror’s true acquisition history 28.
- Observes Ye Fan, Dragon Horse, and Donkey even while its temporal-travel ability is unavailable during recovery 86.
- Discerns possible futures, including ones that make it fear the Empress 103.
The Tianxuan ruins shown to the Saintess are a stored projection of a later era, not a newly captured prophetic vision 17. Activating retrospective playback can also be costly: Little Madman loses all his magical reserves after supplying only a small initial trace of power 8.
Time Arts and Combat
Its ancient characters contain the arts from which Luo Yan develops his temporal techniques 180.
- Its Great Dao of Time closely matches the true River of Time, providing the foundation for Luo Yan’s Time Scripture 180.
- Unleashes temporal radiance capable of wounding the injured Immortal King beneath Wantuo Mountain 258.
- Resists the Heaven-Waving Divine Banner’s immortal might 242.
- Takes the form of a Time Sword during Luo Yan’s battle within his sea of consciousness 272.
- Joins Luo Yan as a Yin-Yang Millstone, grinding the Luo Family Ancestor to ash and resisting the River of Time 275.
Karmic Tracking and Concealment
- Severs a karmic thread and cuts off the aura associated with a threatening gaze 51.
- Follows a karmic thread through an illusory passage to identify its source 264.
- Helps conceal its and Luo Yan’s presence to reduce an era’s rejection 144.
- Can sever the connection between its fragments and the Time Church’s summoning arts, or deliberately maintain that connection as a deception 191.
Restoration and Bonded Life
- Repairs itself by refining the origin of time 6 17 102.
- Uses Luo Yan’s life to rejoin its fragments; it states that the death of either would kill the other 121.
- Rapidly reconstitutes its shattered body after lightning damage, although damage to its origin remains potentially crippling 260.
- Fuses physically with Luo Yan and supplies power through their shared body 261 264.
- Remains subject to Luo Yan’s authority as its contracted master, including his ability to punish its consciousness and prevent it from reclaiming control 267 271.
Ancient Knowledge
- Identifies Luo Yan’s innate divine immortal physique and explains its need for immortal energy 50 51.
- Names Solar Divine Stone and chaos saint blood as the materials required to break the Taiyin Physique’s lifespan curse 82.
- Advises cultivation through clones placed in different eras and alters their innate roots with divine patterns 158.
- Explains that a single type of power was insufficient for its attempted breakthrough beyond Immortal King; balanced development across multiple powers was necessary 265.
- Recovers memories when relevant sights or circumstances trigger them, rather than retaining complete access to its past 49 50.
Limitations and Risks
- Temporal karma: Repeated crossings can mark a traveler in spacetime. Changing history or revealing crucial future information can attract lethal consequences 259 270.
- Limited rescue capability: It warns that it cannot save Luo Yan’s clones if they fall in other eras 158.
- Vulnerable consciousness: It claims that erasing its spirit could lower its grade; Quasi-Immortal Emperors can readily destroy that consciousness 50 270.
- Incomplete knowledge: It initially believes the universe may be reflected history, then revises that view upon seeing the severed river. A later reflected era is separately confirmed by the Lord of Time 102 103 285.
- Shared-body hazards: Its power nearly bursts Luo Yan’s flesh during their first Weapon-Control Dao connection. Harmonization takes a hundred years 271.
- Lord of Time’s authority: The Lord of Time identifies spacetime travel as his own authority and withdraws that power from Luo Yan after Luo Yan abandons the Great Dao of Time 285.
