Background / History
Evolution Research and the Sea God
Before the main events, an unnamed evil soul master encountered the whale king as he approached one million years of cultivation. The researcher sacrificed himself while asking the whale king to preserve a strand of his consciousness, allowing him to observe evolution from within. Following his guidance, the whale king created the Sea of Inheritance and consumed large numbers of sea soul beasts in pursuit of dragon transformation 15.
The Sea God eventually descended and blinded one of the whale king’s eyes with his Trident. The aftershock of Sea God’s Light dispersed the researcher’s remaining soul. His surviving notes concluded that dragon transformation alone would not free the whale king from the world’s restrictions on soul beasts attaining godhood 15.
The researcher identified three requirements for ultimate evolution: being fully human, possessing a super soul beast bloodline, and holding energy as vast as the heavens and sea. Ren Tao understood these conditions as the reason his human primordial spirit and soul beast power could open an evolutionary path beyond the whale king’s stalled dragon transformation 15.
The whale king had also fought Tang San before Ren Tao approached him. He claimed that he would have killed Tang San during that encounter if the Sea God had not intervened 1.
Ren Tao’s Proposal
Ren Tao, who had transmigrated into the Evil Orca King, sought the whale king’s help to avoid becoming Tang San’s Soul Ring. He warned that the Sea God’s Fourth Trial targeted the Evil Spirit Orcas and that the Eighth Trial would concern the whale king himself 1.
The whale king rejected an immediate assault on Sea God Island, citing Bo Saixi and the Sea God’s defenses. He instead considered swallowing Ren Tao to deny Tang San his intended Soul Ring. Ren Tao countered that the trials could change and invoked the safety of the whale king’s wife and daughter, prompting him to reconsider. Ren Tao then instructed him to watch for a green signal flare marking the hunt’s beginning 1.
Ambush and Death
The whale king entered the battle while Ren Tao was initiating the Evil Orca King’s self-destruction. Using the commotion as cover, he unleashed Devour, knocked away Tang San’s bottle of Ice and Fire Yin Yang Spring water, and swept the battlefield with suction. Ren Tao deliberately charged into the whirlpool rather than risk becoming Tang San’s Soul Ring 3.
After swallowing Ren Tao, the whale king attacked Tang San’s exhausted companions and the Demon Soul Great White Sharks. He intended to devour Tang San and break through his final barrier to godhood. His lightning killed at least twenty to thirty sharks and an even greater number of Evil Spirit Orcas 4.
Ren Tao survived inside him by transforming into human form and using the Evil Orca King’s energy shield. Repeated internal attacks caused severe pain and prevented the whale king from using his full strength, forcing him to retreat. Ren Tao then released the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Spring water inside his body and escaped through his abdomen with Orca Shattering Fang Slash 4.
The whale king died with his internal organs almost completely dissolved. Ren Tao cut open his skull, consumed the Whale Brain, and escaped with the Whale Pearl and Soul Bone before Tang San’s group arrived 5.
Posthumous Inheritance
The Whale Pearl gave Ren Tao access to the whale king’s skills and an autonomous-evolution legacy. A whale king phantom subsequently appeared during Ren Tao’s duel with Tang San, countering the Eight Spider Lances and developing Spider Spears of its own 7 11 12.
Within the Sea of Inheritance, the whale king appeared as a winged, mutated creature without self-awareness. Its attempt to devour Ren Tao led to reciprocal devouring: energy circulated between them without increasing or decreasing their combined reserves. Their separate forms gradually fused, completing Ren Tao’s reception of the Whale Pearl’s inheritance 14 15.
Ren Tao discovered that much of the whale king’s power had sustained the Sea of Inheritance and nurtured an evolving super-species. The fatal internal attack had prevented him from drawing upon the Whale Pearl’s power, leaving that inheritance intact 15.
His legacy later attracted the Asura God’s investigation. The Asura God also stated that another force had awakened in the depths when the whale king died, though the discussion did not identify it 34.
The world seed later explained that it had awakened when the whale king’s death briefly stalled the world’s consciousness, establishing a further consequence of his death beyond Ren Tao’s inheritance 99.
Later Influence and Surviving Remains
Ren Tao used the whale king’s million-year Torso Soul Bone as bait to draw the Heaven Dou and Star Luo rulers and Bibi Dong toward Vast Sea City. Bibi Dong, examining Ren Tao’s recording, was puzzled by how the bone could have separated from a soul beast without losing its power. Ren Tao subsequently displayed it at Jade Tide Bay before confronting the coalition assembled against him 41 54.
After Ren Tao’s confrontation with the Angel God and the collapse of the Sea of Inheritance, the whale king’s bone saved him and carried him to safety. Sea soul beasts watched over him while human soul masters searched the waters for him and the Asura Sword. When Ren Tao recovered, the sword was embedded in the middle of the whale king’s purple Soul Bone, and he addressed the deceased whale king as “Brother Whale” while expressing shame 63 64.
The whale king’s former place in Tang San’s Sea God trials also passed to Ren Tao. Bo Saixi informed Ren Tao that he was now Tang San’s Eighth Trial, and Ren Tao recognized that he had replaced the whale king as its target 77.
Following Ren Tao’s tribulation, his awakened Kunpeng bloodline replaced both the whale king’s and the Evil Orca King’s divine soul imprints with the Giant Kun. Ren Tao could thereafter simulate the Giant Kun martial soul 78.
Appearance
- Living body: A mountain-like whale over two hundred meters long, dwarfing the thirty-meter Evil Orca King 1.
- Lone eye: Had one enormous functioning eye; the Sea God had blinded the other with his Trident 1 15.
- Radiance: His body shone like blue crystal, with lightning flashing across it. After death, it became dark and lost its luster 4 5.
- Mutated inheritance form: Developed wings measuring thirty to forty meters each, formed from golden bone spikes joined by thin membranes 14.
- Additional mutations: Golden, jellyfish-like tendrils hung beneath the wings, while red, ginseng-like flowers grew on his head 14.
Personality
The whale king was proud of his strength and openly contemptuous of Tang San, whom he called an insignificant human. Nevertheless, he recognized the danger posed by Bo Saixi and the Sea God’s arrangements on Sea God Island and refused to attack it recklessly 1.
He was opportunistic rather than dependable as an ally. He waited for the battle against the Evil Spirit Orcas to exhaust both sides, then swallowed Ren Tao and attempted to eliminate everyone present. Concern for his wife and daughter was one of the few arguments that visibly unsettled him 1 3 4.
He believed sufficient power could allow a soul beast to become a god. The evil soul master’s research challenged this conviction, concluding that his intended dragon transformation would still leave him bound by the world’s laws 15.
Abilities & Skills
Devour
An innate technique that draws targets and energy toward his mouth through immense suction 3 7.
- Swept up sharks and orcas across the battlefield and pulled Tang San’s Divine Slaughter’s Domain into dissolving wisps 3.
- Was powerful enough that even a Titled Douluo would avoid confronting it directly 3.
- Exposed him to attacks from swallowed prey; Ren Tao survived ingestion and killed him from within 4 5.
Thunder and Ocean Control
His attacks combined blue-purple energy, lightning, whirlpools, and surging seawater 4.
- Unleashed wide-ranging energy blasts followed by lethal lightning assaults 4.
- Possessed speed and explosive power beyond the Shrek Seven Devils’ ability to withstand at that point 4.
- Could have continued overwhelming Tang San’s group, but Ren Tao’s internal attacks disrupted his power 4.
Soul Power Armor
One of the three skills Ren Tao inherited from the Whale Pearl, alongside Devour and Thunder 7.
- Its ultimate evolutionary purpose was dragon transformation, which the whale king treated as his route to godhood 7.
- Ren Tao used the inherited protection as a Soul Garment; Tang San’s evolved Eight Spider Lances could pierce it 10.
- The ability’s intended endpoint was not proof of successful godhood: the whale king never completed that ascent 15.
Sea of Inheritance
An internal realm sustained by the whale king’s cultivation and soul power, created under the evil soul master’s guidance 15.
- Used much of his energy to nurture a sacred embryo—the super-species intended to emerge through evolution 15.
- Preserved the evil soul master’s research as information contained in a drift bottle 15.
- Survived his death intact and became the foundation of Ren Tao’s further evolution 15.
- Under Ren Tao, absorbed divine power and began an iterative upgrade after his confrontation with the Sea God’s divine consciousness 29.
- Later shattered into blood clouds during Ren Tao’s struggle against the Angel God 63.
- The Giant Kun subsequently explained that repairing it required Ren Tao to complete the evil soul master’s unfinished path 76.
Posthumous Phantom and Spider Spears
These abilities belong to the inherited manifestation operating through Ren Tao, not to the living whale king before his death 11 12.
- Countered Tang San’s Eight Spider Lances through a contest of Devour, consuming poison and spiritual power 11.
- Developed eight Spider Spears that seized Xiao Wu and began draining her power 12 15.
- Could continue acting through devouring instinct while Ren Tao was disoriented 12.
- Ren Tao’s version of Devour induced euphoria and performed genetic decoding that he explicitly distinguished from the original whale king’s technique 11.
- The Giant Kun later clarified that Ren Tao’s instinct to devour was distinct from the genetic decoding ability inherited from the evil soul master 76.
- The whale king’s divine soul imprint was ultimately replaced by the Giant Kun after Ren Tao awakened his Kunpeng bloodline 78.
Remains & Inherited Items
- Whale Pearl — The essence of his million years of cultivation. It transferred Devour, Thunder, and Soul Power Armor to Ren Tao and unlocked his autonomous-evolution legacy 5 7.
- Its initial absorption brought Ren Tao to the threshold of two hundred thousand years of cultivation; full reception of its inheritance required his later fusion with the whale king’s manifestation 8 15.
- Much later, the Creation God stripped the Whale Pearl from Ren Tao while reversing his accumulated transformations and gains 122.
- Whale Brain — Golden and intensely fragrant. Ren Tao shared portions with surviving Evil Spirit Orcas, improving their injuries and restoring strength; scattered pieces also misled the pursuing sharks 5 6.
- Soul Bone — An amethyst-like bone Ren Tao retrieved after the whale king’s death, refusing to leave it for Tang San 5.
- Identified as a million-year Torso Soul Bone and used as the prize in Ren Tao’s scheme to draw the empires and Spirit Hall into his game 41.
- Displayed by Ren Tao at Jade Tide Bay before his battle with the assembled coalition 54.
- Saved Ren Tao and carried him to safety after his confrontation with the Angel God. The Asura Sword was subsequently shown embedded in its center 63 64.
Relationships
- Demon Empress — Wife and, according to Ren Tao’s knowledge, another million-year demonic whale. Her safety helped persuade him to consider Ren Tao’s warning 1.
- Unnamed daughter — Her potential danger likewise caused him visible apprehension 1.
- Ren Tao / Evil Orca King — Prospective ally turned swallowed prey, killer, and inheritor. Ren Tao later expressed remorse to the instinctive inheritance manifestation before they merged 1 4 5 14 15. After the whale king’s Soul Bone saved him, Ren Tao addressed him as “Brother Whale” and expressed shame 63 64.
- Sea God — Longstanding enemy who blinded him and previously intervened to protect Tang San from him 1 15.
- Tang San — Former opponent and intended devouring target; the whale king hoped consuming the Sea God’s chosen heir would enable godhood 1 4. Ren Tao later replaced the deceased whale king as the target of Tang San’s Eighth Sea God Trial 77.
- Unnamed evil soul master — Researcher and evolutionary adviser who sacrificed himself to observe the whale king’s development 15.
- Giant Kun — Later replaced the whale king’s and the Evil Orca King’s divine soul imprints within Ren Tao following his Kunpeng bloodline awakening 78.
- World seed — Awakened when the whale king’s death briefly stalled the world’s consciousness 99.
Notable Quotes
“Bo Saixi, that Peerless Douluo, guards Sea God Island, and the Sea God has all manner of arrangements there. Do you think I can just storm it whenever I please?” 1
“Let me devour you and break through the final barrier to godhood!” 4
Trivia
- An author’s note explicitly distinguishes the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King from the Evil Orca King and confirms the former’s million years of cultivation. It also explains that Ren Tao’s initial rise to only two hundred thousand years after consuming the Pearl reflects the time required for absorption and fusion 11.
- Ren Tao contrasted his intact Whale Pearl inheritance with the original Douluo Continent storyline, in which Tang San’s absorption of the whale king’s Soul Ring and Soul Bone had already consumed much of his energy. Ren Tao also speculated that using the Pearl to repair the Sea God’s Heart had concealed its evolutionary potential 7.
