Background / History
Hong Wenyuan was the eldest disciple of Cloud Sword Peak, the fourth peak of the Sword Sect. When his master entered seclusion for more than a decade, Cloud Sword Peak came under pressure from internal and external rivals. During an outside mission, Hong was severely wounded by the Poison Demon Shangguan Qingcang and then ambushed by unidentified masked men while fleeing home. He concealed himself in Xiaohe Village with Yue'e to recuperate. 52
While hiding in Xiaohe Village, Hong appeared as a pale, leg-impaired scholar who taught local children reading, writing, and etiquette when his health allowed. His apparent paralysis concealed an injured but formidable martial artist; he initially used a wheelchair and avoided openly displaying his strength. 23 24
Lin Feng sought him out after recognizing his extraordinary strength. Hong treated Lin Feng’s injuries, accurately identified the quality and limitations of the attacker’s martial arts from the wounds alone, and explained the basics of martial realms and Internal Energy. 29 Though reluctant to accept a disciple because of his injuries and concerns over karmic consequences, he tested Lin Feng’s character, memory, and sword talent before passing down the self-created Yin Yang Swordplay, its cultivation method, Heart Nourishing Swordplay, and the Purple Moon Heart Sutra. 50 51 52
After recovering sufficient strength, Hong returned to the Sword Sect’s power struggle. He defeated three peak Innate experts in the Peak Master Competition, became Peak Master of Cloud Sword Peak, and received the Human Emperor Sword’s recognition. 323 324 He later expanded Cloud Sword Peak’s territory and enacted reforms intended to improve ordinary people’s lives, which made him a target of powerful families and factions. 361 368
With Lin Feng’s help, Hong overcame the Cold Poison that had hindered him for years, awakened Mental Power, advanced to Grandmaster, and entered the Great Void. 376 384 564 The Sword Master eventually appointed him Sect Master of the Shenzhou Sword Sect, giving him the authority to pursue the reforms he had long envisioned. 889
Appearance
Hong is first depicted as a pale, injured man whose damaged legs confine him to a wheelchair. As he recovers, he abandons the pretense of helplessness and resumes wielding a sword with agile, graceful movements. 24 264 324
- Pale complexion during his concealment in Xiaohe Village. 24
- Leg impairment caused by Cold Poison; frequently uses a wheelchair, with a sword kept behind it. 264 270
- His hair turns white after believing Lin Feng died in the ruins. 322
- In the Great Void, his newly awakened body initially appears old, withered, bent, and devoid of martial strength. 565
Personality
Hong is demanding but deeply invested in his disciples. He regards accepting a direct disciple as comparable to accepting a son and therefore imposes severe tests on Lin Feng rather than accepting talent casually. 51 He values moral character over aptitude when choosing disciples, which contributes to Cloud Sword Peak’s reputation for not oppressing ordinary people. 324
He is compassionate toward common people and possesses strong reformist ambitions. Under his rule, he limits local officials’ authority, redistributes land, shares profits with the public, and establishes schools; his territory becomes prosperous enough to draw migrants from neighboring counties. 361 His idealism is matched by ruthless resolve when his disciples are endangered, as shown when he enforces a death-match agreement and kills a spectator who attempts to withdraw his son. 270
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Hong is an exceptional swordsman whose martial arts were unreadable to Lin Feng even when Hong was injured. He can crush a manual into powder with his bare hands and demonstrates sword forms too advanced for Lin Feng to imitate without their True Qi circulation methods. 51 264
- Created the High-grade Yin Yang Swordplay, whose changes combine hardness and softness, speed and slowness, Yin and Yang. 51
- Created A Sword Sunny Day, an Innate True Skill personally passed to Lin Feng after Hong regained the ability to stand. 264
- Created the top-tier Innate True Skill Heaven and Earth Samsara Swordplay, which stores True Qi in the heavens for up to ten days before release. 322 384
- Uses the Clear Sky Sword Strike, condensing ten days of stored True Qi into a massive sword attack that kills three peak Innate opponents at once. 323
- Can use Myriad Swords Returning to Origin, though his lower True Qi quality and Mental Power allow him to condense only dozens of sword energies rather than Lin Feng’s millions. 384 388
Unity of Man and Heaven
During the Peak Master Competition, Hong enters the Unity of Man and Heaven state despite remaining an Innate martial artist. The state immobilizes his three opponents and astonishes even a Grandmaster-level elder from the Sword Sect’s main peak. 323
- Enables his decisive one-sword victory over Dai Tianming, Ji Zhongcheng, and the Huo patriarch’s younger brother. 323
- Establishes his standing as the strongest expert below the Grandmaster level at the time. 324
Mental Power
Lin Feng guides Hong to sense Mental Power after infusing him with Crimson Gold Glaze. Hong succeeds the following morning, becoming the only one among the initially infused Cloud Sword Peak disciples to awaken it. 384
- Allows him to comprehend Myriad Swords Returning to Origin. 384
- Gives him approximately three meters of perception range in the Great Void, greater than Zhang Xiaoyu’s at the time. 566
- Is considered a potential weapon against Great Void Evil Spirits, though Hong himself considers his amount insufficient. 408
Cold Poison Adaptation
Hong suffers long-term damage from Shangguan Qingcang’s Ice Demon Art, leaving him unable to walk normally and suppressing his cultivation. 52 260
- Lin Feng first helps him regain mobility by transmitting a True Qi structure for expelling the poison. 264
- The poison proves incurable by ordinary decomposition, returning after Lin Feng temporarily removes it. 376
- After Lin Feng uses Golden Light Infusion to transmit the perfected Divine Farmer’s Myriad Poisons Scripture, the poison is transformed into Ice True Qi rather than merely removed, strengthening Hong instead. 376 377
