History

Origins and the Six-Thousand-Year War

The Demon God Pillars descended onto the Holy Demon Continent, bringing the Demon Gods and creating the Demon Race. The demons subsequently occupied most of the continent. Their arrival followed the devastation caused by Electrolux, when humanity’s strength had already been severely depleted 196 337.

Human resistance was initially divided. Some empires hoped the invaders would weaken neighboring states, and human powers continued fighting one another before the demons reached them. The threat of extinction eventually drove humanity to unite 196 301.

For more than six thousand years, demons and humans remained at war. Humanity held roughly one-quarter of the continent, while the Demon Race controlled the remainder. Demon numerical superiority and the Seventy-Two Demon Gods were counterbalanced by humanity’s stronger production and supply systems 337 365.

Demon armies regularly attacked human fortresses, but successful raids generally carried away food and captives rather than establishing permanent territorial gains. Huo Yuhao interpreted the repeated, poorly planned offensives as a means of exploiting humanity while consuming the Demon Race’s own population 301.

Huo Yuhao’s Reforms

Huo Yuhao arrived in Heart City after being swept into space-time turbulence and fell under Feng Xiu’s control. Although initially concerned with escape, he reconsidered his view of demons after witnessing starvation, abandoned wounded soldiers, and the treatment of enslaved humans 327 330 788.

His early reforms addressed food and tools. By adapting human implements to demon bodies, he demonstrated that demons could farm rather than remain dependent on raiding, enslaved labor, and hybrid producers. He also treated disabled high-ranking demons and helped establish settlements along new roads 347 356.

Over four years, more than ninety percent of low-ranking demons and nearly all disabled high-ranking demons began following his directions. They nominally belonged to A Nan’s forces, but recognized Huo Yuhao as their actual organizer 356.

Demon City became the center of these changes. It admitted different tribes, hybrids, and humans without discrimination based on ancestry or cultivation. Grain distribution reduced famine deaths to fewer than a thousand and sharply decreased routine attacks on human fortresses 360 363.

The reforms also produced organized resistance to the old rulers. Large groups surrounded demon cities and removed enslaved humans, while Huo Yuhao’s protection deterred violent suppression. Feng Xiu initially tolerated these developments because he believed control of the Demon God Pillars guaranteed ultimate control over the race 356 364.

Renewed War and Austin Griffin

The Temple Alliance—and later the Temple Federation—viewed the demons’ new productive capacity as a strategic threat. Federation hardliners advocated restrictions on trade and attacks against farms, roads, factories, schools, hospitals, and workers. Chen Zidian and Long Haochen opposed the scope or planning of these measures 365 379.

Before renewed fighting, Huo Yuhao organized the large-scale return of enslaved humans. Agares and Vasak pressured other Demon Gods to cooperate, while A Bao and A Nan forced resistant rulers and nobles to surrender their captives. Receiving and escorting the rescued people occupied Federation resources while demon war preparations continued 391.

The resulting army was radically different from its predecessors: equipped with Soul Tools, supported by medical teams, and trained to build fortified positions. Its bombardment destroyed Imperial Dragon Pass’s entire outer wall in a single night 393 404 425.

The demons’ demand for Long Haochen and Haoyue was tied to Austin Griffin’s impending awakening. Mutual distrust prevented a negotiated response: humanity regarded Haoyue as its means of destroying the Demon God Pillars and would not surrender him 390 413 422.

After Long Haochen defeated Feng Xiu, the emperor acknowledged the suffering inflicted by the Demon Race and begged humanity to unite against Austin Griffin. Demon soldiers subsequently fought in the battle against him 467 581.

Exodus and Reconstruction

Six months after Austin Griffin’s defeat, Huo Yuhao and Long Haochen negotiated an end to the war. Continued fighting threatened humanity with further losses, while the destruction of Demon God Pillars was painfully weakening demons 489.

Huo Yuhao offered the race a choice between remaining on the Holy Demon Continent and moving into his developing demiplane. The demons ultimately departed with him. Long-standing human grievances made lasting peace on the continent uncertain even with Long Haochen’s support 489 490 788.

Relocation placed the tribes on a more equal footing. Reconstruction required mixed settlement and cooperation, while surviving nobles increasingly performed the same work and lived under the same conditions as other demons. The former hierarchy was eventually dismantled 493 658.

By Chapter 513, the demiplane contained ten cities, nearly a hundred additional villages and towns, and roads connecting its settlements. Subsequent development included education, welfare, reliable healing-medicine production, advanced metallurgy, and Mecha-related instruction 513 514 537 565.

Appearance and Physiology

  • Varied bodies: The Demon Race has no single shared appearance. Lower-ranking tribes often have bodies closer to magical beasts, while higher-ranking groups such as Moon Demons, Star Demons, and the Demon Gods are more humanlike 325 347.
  • Dark-element affinity: Demons contain a comparatively high proportion of dark-attribute energy. Their emitted dark aura has some influence on tool use, but Huo Yuhao found this insufficient to explain their supposed inability to produce goods 337 347.
  • Physical endurance: Even the weakest demons are First Order cultivators, with stronger bodies and greater resistance to hunger than ordinary humans. They can nevertheless die of prolonged starvation 326.
  • Language and reasoning: Every demon Huo Yuhao examined could express itself through language. High-ranking demons possessed reasoning and communication abilities comparable to humans 330 347.
  • Demon crystals: Demon crystals can be recovered from their bodies. Human collectors also use some demon remains as equipment-making and medicinal materials 326.
  • Human ancestry: Demons can have children with humans. Human blood does not inherently prevent cultivation or access to the highest ranks; Agares and Vasak both possess human ancestry 306 337.

Society and Government

Former Hierarchy

Position Privileges and conditions
Demon God Emperor Supreme ruler, with authority grounded in the Demon God Pillars 327 356.
Demon Gods Received first priority in regional resource distribution; even the lowest-ranked stood above ordinary demons 328.
Direct descendants, favored tribes, and nobles Enjoyed privileged access to food, treatment, urban residence, and enslaved humans 327 340 363.
Other high-ranking demons Served as important fighters, but cultivation alone did not guarantee medical care or privileged status 327.
Human slaves and productive hybrids Supplied essential labor before the reforms. Enslaved humans who could work were often maintained better than low-ranking demons, without possessing freedom 327 340.
Low-ranking and disabled demons Frequently abandoned to hunger; some were barred from cities, while wounded veterans lost value when their fighting strength declined 327 363.

Slavery and Human-Demon Hybrids

  • Human ownership: Enslaved humans were usually dispersed among individual owners rather than kept in centralized prisons. Ownership also served as a status symbol 340.
  • Abandonment of the unproductive: Old, sick, and injured captives could be gathered together and left without medicine until they recovered or died 340.
  • Hybrid separatism: Yue Ye secretly belonged to an organization whose members included advocates of separating human-demon hybrids from the Demon Race. Agares also sought an independent future for them 307 392.
  • Unequal acceptance: Powerful hybrids could hold high office among demons, but human society remained hostile toward children with demon ancestry. Some rescued mothers stayed in Demon City rather than abandon their children 306 361.
  • Integration after reform: As demons gained productive skills, the economic distinction between them and hybrids diminished, reducing the hybrids’ former exceptional status 392.

Reformed Society

  • Equal access: Demon City protected residents regardless of tribe, cultivation, or human ancestry, provided they obeyed its rules 360.
  • Education: Traditional demon society had no academies or general education. Huo Yuhao introduced teaching alongside farming and industrial development 372 374.
  • Mixed communities: Migration and interdependent production weakened tribal separation and reduced the Demon Gods’ authority over their former subjects 423 493.
  • Changed political standing: Many Demon Gods shifted from absolute tribal rulers toward being powerful individuals within a broader society 423.
  • Food culture: Eating was already a widespread interest. Once food became more plentiful, cooking became a major hobby across ranks, though experimentation did not always produce edible results 368.

Abilities and Skills

Cultivation

Demons cultivate by absorbing Heaven and Earth Vital Energy and converting it into their own power, broadly paralleling humans and the demons of the separate Demon Plane 789.

  • All members can cultivate, and even the weakest begin at First Order 326.
  • Bloodline purity influences inherited Spirit Power and talent, although acquired intervention also matters 306.
  • Advancement is theoretically open to every demon, but starvation prevents many low-ranking members from surviving long enough to progress 337.

Demon God Pillar Dependence

The aura emitted by Demon God Pillars forms an important component of demon existence 347.

  • Huo Yuhao observed that the proportion of this aura increased with cultivation 347.
  • Destroyed pillars caused aura loss and cultivation regression in a Medusa and Leopard Demon 347.
  • Huo Yuhao concluded that destroying every pillar could endanger higher-ranking demons’ lives; hybrids appeared less vulnerable 347.
  • Widespread pillar destruction later caused painful weakening, helping make a final settlement necessary 489.

Magic and Flight

  • Demon Eye Warlocks cast magic missiles, while Hell Demons also use battlefield magic 581.
  • Some tribes can fly naturally, but only higher-ranking flyers initially met Huo Yuhao’s required speeds 406.
  • Modified Flying Soul Tools enhanced lower-ranking flyers for reconnaissance and rapid supply transport 406.

Production and Engineering

The supposed inability of demons to produce goods was disproved through tools adapted to their bodies 347.

  • Disabled high-ranking demons successfully used modified implements to sow and harvest 347.
  • Demon City developed metal-smelting factories and initially emphasized civilian Soul Tools, shields, and lighting rather than offensive ammunition 361.
  • Later engineers enchanted forged metal to improve its quality and elemental affinity 514.
  • Demon specialists helped operate a production line capable of mass-producing Soul Forged metal 565.

Healing Limitations

  • Traditional demon armies had almost no healers, and ordinary wounded soldiers usually received no treatment 327.
  • Light energy is harmful to demons and can be lethal to weaker members, limiting access to human-style healing 327.
  • Healing potions and suitable spells were scarce; noble birth and favored connections mattered more than cultivation alone 327.
  • Huo Yuhao’s new legions included medical teams, and healing-medicine production later operated without shortages 393 514.

Military

Organization

Feature Traditional Legions Huo Yuhao’s New Legions
Composition Usually a single Demon God’s tribe; members were at least Fifth Order 393. Mixed tribes, largely drawn from previously neglected low-ranking demons 393 419.
Size Generally around ten thousand per legion, leading several times their number of low-ranking auxiliaries 393. Twelve legions totaling 1.2 million demons 404.
Command Answered to their respective Demon Gods 419. Answered to Huo Yuhao or his designated commanders, not unrelated Demon Gods 419.
Training Earlier offensives relied heavily on costly charges against human fortresses 301 455. Disabled veterans taught small-unit coordination, counter-ambush tactics, fortress avoidance, and Soul Tool operation 393 403.
Equipment Historically limited to a minority of soldiers 404. Standardized armor, Soul Tool Shields, Soul Guidance Ray Guns, and Soul Cannons 393 404.
Medical support Almost nonexistent for ordinary troops 327. Dedicated teams carrying healing medicines 393.
  • Rapid deployment: The new armies advanced at least five times faster than during the previous Holy War 403.
  • Fortified warfare: Trenches, obstacles, shield emitters, heavy weapons, and energy-gathering Soul Guidance Arrays replaced reliance on unprotected assaults 404 405 421.
  • Defensive effectiveness: Three thousand Eighth Tier Hell Hounds failed to break through the demon positions at Myriad Beast Pass 425.
  • Training remained essential: Old elite units initially disdained Soul Tools. Last-minute instruction reduced some siege casualties but left many soldiers unable to operate their weapons effectively 455.
  • Postwar reorganization: Battered legions were disbanded, and the twelve newer legions were consolidated into six 514.
  • Later mixed-race service: Demon veterans trained alongside humans and soul beasts. A Moon Demon captain later led an Integration Movement squad rescuing soul spirits from a Spirit Pagoda while avoiding unnecessary killings and supplying medicine to the injured 581 815.
