Background / History

Steelix began as an ordinary Onix from Dewford Town and grew up alongside Yong. As a youngster, he ran through mine tunnels under the protection of a Machop who later became Machamp. Yong regarded him as family rather than choosing him solely for his aptitude 53 54 149 211 805.

The arrival of the talented Marshtomp and Aron made Onix conscious of his own limitations. He had struggled even to learn Bite and responded by training relentlessly. Yong supported him with an ultralight Metal Coat obtained from President Stone, Primordial Stone Milk, and high-quality minerals, helping him avoid falling behind his newer teammates 53 74.

His early training emphasized Steel- and Rock-type attacks at the expense of Ground-type energy. Aggron exposed that imbalance when Dig barely damaged him. Yong subsequently introduced low-power Earthquake and Sand Tomb drills, teaching Steelix to regulate their range and intensity 32 40 41.

As the team expanded, Steelix became its dependable senior. He guided every teammate, helped supervise intensive training, and cared for companions during vulnerable periods. His authority rested on both his strength and his willingness to share experience without reservation 205 603 718 805.

Appearance

Steelix has a massive, segmented, dark ironstone body, scarlet eyes, and a prominent facial scar 25 109 258.

  • Body structure: Nine segments, including his enormous flattened head. Paired protrusions extend from the third, fifth, and seventh segments; his tail resembles a spiked hammer 25.
  • Facial scar: The crack on his head as Onix became a crossing scar around his eyes after evolution. It is later described as X-shaped and compared to a medal of honor 7 25 109 205.
  • Mutated markings: Irregular, diamondlike crystalline patterns appeared upon evolution. Later descriptions identify pale- or dark-gold markings across his black body 25 258 271.
  • Mega form: Blue eyes, six fanglike protrusions beside his mouth, diamondlike body projections and tail, and six groups of crystalline fragments orbiting his body. Blue hexagonal ring patterns intertwine with dark-gold lines on his lower segments 432.
  • Natural Reversion: Emerges surrounded by blue electrical arcs and fully activated dark-gold primal markings 455.

Personality

Steelix is quiet, reserved, steady, and stubbornly persistent. He trains without needing Yong’s supervision, accepting slow, repetitive work as the foundation of strength. Despite not having the team’s greatest natural talent, his consistency earns the respect of gifted and proud teammates alike 183 805.

He is protective of his companions and generous with his knowledge. Marshtomp’s defeat can provoke him into an unusually furious entrance, while his everyday conduct is patient and reassuring: he helps teammates train, guards an egg, and lowers his enormous head affectionately toward Yong 74 100 205 310.

His composure does not make him fearless or unbeatable. Slaking’s Feral Ape Aura nearly broke his resolve, but Yong’s encouragement and memories of their shared journey allowed him to attack despite his fear 149.

Abilities & Skills

Rock Head and Defensive Conditioning

Rock Head prevents recoil damage from Steelix’s own moves, though Ability suppression can disable it 25 1033.

  • His body is described as harder than metal or diamond, with its toughness further developed through mineral absorption, underground pressure, and impact training 25 42 130 409.
  • Gradual exposure to seawater overcame his original fear of water. By the completion of that training, ordinary Water-type attacks did next to no damage to him 7 41 130.
  • His defenses are not absolute. Mental attacks disrupted him against Raichu and Metagross, while sufficiently powerful opponents still overwhelmed him 54 149 332.
  • Natural-energy conversion strengthened his defense further. Against Milotic, primal-marking-enhanced Earth Power blocked water torrents, while Dragon-origin attacks failed to shake Mega Steelix’s body 1042.

Physical Power and Signature Attacks

Steelix combines exceptional mass and strength with agility disproportionate to his size 25 570.

  • Iron Tail: His longstanding signature attack. It earned Aggron’s approval, defeated Raichu, and later shattered Goodra’s Force Domain during their opening clash 32 54 923.
  • High Horsepower: Became a major Ground-type attack after seawater training. Yong later spent one million Training Points to raise it to Commanding Class; it began showing signs of merging with his Force Domain 155 805.
  • Heavy Slam: Developed into a magnetic-storm-enhanced strike capable of hurling Zekrom hundreds of meters backward, though Zekrom showed little lasting damage 806.
  • Other heavy attacks: Uses Head Smash, Double-Edge, Giga Impact, Body Press, and Iron Head. Against Cynthia’s Garchomp, a full-power Giga Impact collision left both Pokémon falling from the sky 183 489 805.

Ground Control and Battlefield Manipulation

Targeted training corrected Steelix’s initially weak Ground-type control 32 40 41.

  • Dig: Enables underground movement, surprise attacks, and access to secluded training locations 54 74.
  • Sand Tomb: Can transform an entire battlefield into quicksand, restrict footing, and expose a real opponent among Double Team copies 42 54.
  • Earthquake: Carries Mountainous Force after his Elite Class breakthrough 211.
  • Sandstorm and Stealth Rock: Establish battlefield pressure before a decisive attack, as demonstrated against Wallace’s Tentacruel 1033.
  • Screech: Its powerful sound waves interrupted Raichu’s Charm before Steelix burrowed underground 54.

Mountainous Force and Skyward Force

Steelix’s Force Domain manifests the crushing presence of an ancient mountain range 310 332.

  • Mountainous Force: Fully comprehended during training with Brawly and infused into Earthquake 211.
  • Skyward Force: The advanced form gained during Natural Reversion. It suppressed Dragonite’s movement and prevented it from gaining altitude 455 552.
  • Body–domain integration: Steelix can merge his body with the surrounding domain, combining electromagnetic armor, earth origin, and suppressive power 1035.
  • Defensive application: Against Milotic, primal markings transformed Skyward Force from an opponent-restraining field into nourishment that raised his energy limits 1041.
  • Limit: Milotic’s ability to draw on heaven and earth rendered the domain’s normal suppression ineffective 1041.

Electromagnetic Force and Armor

Iron Island’s magnetic environment helped Steelix develop electromagnetic force beyond its earlier, limited use in his Fusion Technique 409 429.

  • Flight: Can remain suspended in the air and fight freely despite his Steel/Ground typing and enormous weight 805.
  • Attack redirection: Electromagnetic force changes his tail’s trajectory during an attack, allowing him to catch evasive opponents 552.
  • Acceleration: Attraction and repulsion can propel his body forward or support it after being driven into the ground 571.
  • Magnetic storm power: Combines Steel Origin with electromagnetic force, producing silver-flamed energy around his body and attacks 806.
  • Thunder Fang enhancement: Electromagnetic force gives the move an almost guaranteed paralysis effect. Milotic’s surrounding moisture helped conduct the attack 1043.
  • Environmental drawback: That same moisture initially made electromagnetic armor amplify Milotic’s pressure on him, forcing Steelix to abandon airborne movement and return to the ground 1041.

Origins, Natural Reversion, and Mega Evolution

Steelix’s higher-level development centers on understanding origin power rather than merely accumulating energy 517.

  • Steel Origin: First comprehended during Mega Evolution; substantially increases the power of Steel-type moves 432 455.
  • Rock and earth origins: Joined Steel Origin in his later repertoire. The Stone Plate helped him approach the natural limit of rock origin despite no longer being Rock-type 805.
  • Ultimate Steel Origin: Absorbing its silvery-white energy matrix crystal revealed the “path to the ultimate” 923.
  • Natural Reversion: Gained when natural energy reached its limit and his primal markings fully activated 455.
  • Mega Evolution: Requires Steelix’s Mega Stone and Yong’s Key Stone. It is temporary, ends when its energy is spent, and consumes more stamina than ordinary battle 432 573.
  • Champion-domain conversion: At Lv86, his natural energy aligned with Steel and Rock. Conversion remained unfinished, with Lv90 identified as the next required threshold 1037.

Fallen Star Dust / Falling Stars

Steelix and Yong developed this Fusion Technique together. It is referred to as both Fallen Star Dust and Falling Stars 110 409 455 805.

  • Initial application: Raises hard stones around the opponent and links them through a magnetic field, cutting off escape routes while Steelix gathers energy 109.
  • Early cost: Its Winter Snow Cup use defeated Dragonair but left Steelix weakened and trembling 110.
  • Refinement: Better Steel- and Ground-type control through Iron Defense and Earth Power earned the technique system recognition 258.
  • Second stage: Unlocked during Natural Reversion 455.
  • Third stage: Reached after Steelix comprehended rock, steel, and earth origins 805.

Team Mentorship

Steelix serves as both a combatant and a practical trainer for Yong’s team 205 603.

  • Helped Marshtomp privately refine Rock Storm, choosing a secluded location to avoid damaging the Pokémon Center 74.
  • Protected Aron during its early wild battles 63.
  • Supervised Rhydon’s basic energy training and later helped Rhyperior and Excadrill master new moves 410 517.
  • Guarded the Stone Plate and cared for Swampert during its recovery 718.

Equipment / Items

  • Mega Stone and metal band — A silver band beneath his head holds a round, silver-gray Mega Stone marked with a distorted diamond pattern. It links with Yong’s Key Stone for Mega Evolution 432.
  • Ultralight Metal Coat — Obtained by Yong from President Stone to support Onix’s transformation and prevent him from falling behind his teammates 53.
  • Primordial Stone Milk — Mixed into his food to improve constitution and potential; residual energy was drawn out through later impact training 25 40 42.
  • Ores, steel, and rare minerals — Absorbed to strengthen his body, increase mass, and replenish him between training sessions 4 40 130 409.
  • Earth core marrow fluid — One of the growth resources invested in him as Yong’s first core team member 100.
  • Stone Plate — Supported his progress toward the limit of rock origin and helped advance his Force Domain 805.
  • Ultimate Steel Origin crystal — Absorbed before facing Diantha’s Goodra, opening his perception of the ultimate path 923.

Relationships

  • Yong — Trainer, childhood companion, and family. Their shared ambition is to stand at the summit together; Yong consistently invests resources in Steelix and places his safety above finishing a battle 54 149 489 923.
  • Swampert / Marshtomp — Younger teammate, close friend, and pupil. Marshtomp’s talent initially pressured Onix to work harder; Steelix later helped refine its techniques and cared for it during recovery 53 74 205 718.
  • Aggron — Teammate who acknowledges Steelix as the team’s dependable senior. Earlier, a wild Aggron’s defensive test exposed Steelix’s poor Ground-type control 32 805.
  • Brawly and Machamp — Training partners associated with his Elite Class breakthrough. Machamp had protected Steelix in the mine tunnels when they were still Machop and Onix 211.
  • Aron / Lairon — Younger teammate whom Steelix protected during early battle practice. Lairon later slept inside Steelix’s ore pile 63 205.
  • Yong’s mother and Uncle Zhibian — Familiar figures from his upbringing. Yong entrusted Steelix with helping Zhibian lead and care for the team 134.
  • Giant Onix — Submitted immediately upon seeing Steelix, then focused its attention entirely on him. Its attention left the normally reserved Steelix so embarrassed that he fled before Yong and the laughing team 945.
