| Sequence One Champion challenger | 969 | After defeating Wuneng Hao, formally challenges the Hoenn League. Sequence One privileges allow direct registration at Rustboro City’s Pokémon Center. |
| Hoenn League Champion | 1046 | Wallace acknowledges that Yong has proved his strength and entrusts the League’s next era to him. |
Background / History
Yong was reborn into the Pokémon world with memories of his life as Chen Yong. In his previous life, he had been a shut-in without wealth or status; in his new life, he grew up in Dewford Town, surrounded by Pokémon and taught by his Elite-level father 1 48 134.
His family’s mining business supplied Devon Corporation and could provide the iron and rare ores needed to raise Aron. These business ties also connected Yong to President Stone and Steven’s faction, giving him access to protection and support unavailable to many ordinary Trainers 24 39 124.
Rebirth initially left him feeling like an observer rather than a full participant in his new world. Having arrived before the familiar story began, he could not reliably depend on his knowledge of future events. Wattson’s maze brought these anxieties to the surface, culminating in a crisis over his identity. The system resolved it by integrating the conflicting personalities, after which he committed to pursuing the summit as Shiyan Yong 48.
As his influence grew, Yong sought independence from the Stone family without rejecting Steven personally. He distinguished Steven the Hoenn Champion from Steven the financial dynasty’s heir, while his family treated relocation to Kalos as an opportunity to develop independently 333 679.
Appearance
Yong is described as a handsome boy with short, tousled black hair. Travel leaves him taller and more tanned than when he first departed 134 289.
- Starting outfit: Blue jeans, a black short-sleeved shirt, sneakers, and gloves 1.
- Ever Grande Conference outfit: A black hoodie and shorts 289.
- Travel gear: Frequently carries a backpack, which he uses alongside his jacket to cushion and control his descent at Snowpoint Gym 511.
Personality
Yong treats Pokémon as family and partners rather than tools. He leaves food for a Breloom group after understanding that its leader was protecting unborn young, rescues injured wild Pokémon, and offers prospective partners choices instead of assuming that strength alone entitles him to catch them 10 163 286 593.
He enjoys challenging battles but also studies his shortcomings. Defeat can restore his perspective rather than discourage him, and he reviews matches to identify improvements. Over time, his earlier flamboyance gives way to a composed, reserved manner closer to his previous adult personality 100 301 503.
That composure has limits. Heross’s cruelty toward Pokémon and disregard for battle rules provoke unusually intense anger. Yong remains competitive enough to relish formidable opponents, and eventually declares openly that he intends to become stronger than everyone he faces 328 876.
Around family, he is more childish and teasing, especially with his father. He also conceals the most dangerous parts of his adventures to spare his parents worry, including his near-death experience beneath the sea 39 134 360.
His ambitions extend beyond individual victory. He understands that powerful families distribute opportunities according to interests and influence, and he deliberately builds friendships and institutional support to protect his future and his family’s independence 333 821 933.
Abilities & Skills
System
Yong possesses a private system that displays Pokémon information, awards Training Points, improves move proficiency, and grants rewards for significant accomplishments 14 23 275.
- Scanning: Reveals levels, types, Abilities, moves, inherited moves, and other information useful for evaluating opponents and prospective partners 14 108 397 593.
- Battle rewards: Grants experience, Training Points, and proficiency gains; even an unsuccessful battle against a Lord-level Pokémon produces rewards 84.
- Direct upgrades: Training Points can raise move proficiency, including custom techniques and high-level moves 112 518.
- Milestone rewards: Competition victories and objectives unlock treasures, TMs, consumables, and additional reward choices 275 588 912.
- Protection protocol: Detects his identity crisis and initiates forced personality integration 48.
- Limits: Pokémon levels and evolution stages constrain how much early proficiency gains improve actual strength. Rock Storm cannot gain proficiency through battle 23 84.
- Secrecy: He delays checking notifications to avoid suspicious behavior and conceals the system even from Terrakion 275 966.
Host Talents
| Talent | Documented effect or limitation |
|---|---|
| Rock Solid | Greatly increases the Defense and Special Defense of his Rock- and Ground-type Pokémon. Halves damage from Water-, Fire-, and Grass-type moves and adjusts the Fighting-type damage multiplier to 1/1 112. |
| Immovable as a Mountain | Provides recovery. A Water Field can largely nullify its usefulness 242 966. |
| Mainstay | A talent Yong can choose whether to activate; its precise effect is not explained in the supplied passages 242. |
| Great Matrix Heart | Grants affinity effective enough to help him persuade Terrakion 966. |
Battle Will
Yong awakens Battle Will upon entering true Gym Class. His later manifestation combines a mountainous presence, blue-green light, and the image of an ancient bluestone millstone 568 876.
- Spreads across a battlefield and into surrounding spectator areas 876.
- Produces sensations of weight, restraint, and difficulty breathing in affected observers 876.
- Continues to develop through experience, resolve, and the strength-based feedback between Trainer and Pokémon 645.
Bonds and Emotional Perception
Yong’s bonds are central to both his philosophy and his strength. Grandmother identifies the mutual trust between him, Steelix, and his other partners as an essential step toward Elite Four level 120.
- Follows an internal sense of Swampert’s presence through the Temple of the Sea 347.
- Perceives Larvitar’s satisfaction and happiness shortly after hatching 237.
- Receives an impression of Aggron’s intimidating field from the mind of a passing Probopass 434.
- Recognizes that Gym Class growth feedback is distinct from ordinary affection or bonds 645.
Training and Battle Strategy
Yong tailors training to each Pokémon’s physique, temperament, and energy development rather than applying a single routine 62 410 598 601.
- Environmental training: Uses sandstorms, ocean waves, underground pressure, and magnetic fields to develop strength and insight into natural forces 62 409 601.
- Weighted exercise: Introduces Trapinch to a Macho Brace at a manageable 30 kg 62.
- Energy development: Guides Aggron toward merging aura with conviction, then toward balanced energies and a Fusion Technique Skill 410 598.
- Terrain manipulation: Commands Excadrill to hollow out a rocky field with Dig and collapse it into quicksand 618.
- Reactive defense: Coordinates Aerodactyl’s Rock Slide, Agility, Steel Wing, and Flamethrower to intercept projectiles during Snowpoint Gym’s moving-ice trial 511.
- Team design: Plans a Trick Room Second Team while retaining Flygon as a First Team reserve 949.
- Pacing: Reassures lower-level partners such as Kleavor that they have time to grow instead of demanding immediate breakthroughs 601.
Research and Political Judgment
Yong contributes knowledge of Mega Evolution and the Bond Phenomenon to the Hoenn League, later collecting research material from Professor Sycamore at Drake’s request 679 726.
- Recognizes the strategic importance of the Temple of the Sea’s Pokémon Eggs and proposes recovering them or destroying the temple to stop Team Charge 347.
- Offers Cynthia an unpredictable “wild card” for the Adamant Orb escort 461.
- Plans a research institute and ecological park as the foundation of a faction built around his own identity, ideas, and strength 933.
- Understands that shared interests, not goodwill alone, are necessary for durable alliances 940.
Pokémon Partners
| Pokémon | Documented role or development |
|---|---|
| Onix / Steelix | His closest partner. Steelix trains under underground pressure and later gains Natural Reversion, Steel Origin, and level 58 during its awakening 409 455. |
| Mudkip / Marshtomp / Swampert | A major training and battle partner. Swampert rescues Rhyhorn, enters a bonded state during the Elite Tournament, and later returns to its colony to obtain a Mudkip for Qingcao 62 163 485 769. |
| Aron / Aggron (“Big White”) | Raised with mineral support and trained around defense, explosive power, electromagnetic force, and Fusion Techniques. Reaches level 75 after defeating Kiawe 39 410 598 881. |
| Trapinch / Flygon | Competitive and strongly attached to flight and freedom. Yong deliberately holds Flygon at level 69 while developing its role as a First Team reserve 62 599 949. |
| Baltoy / Claydol | Accompanies him during the mountain haunting. Claydol later improves its psychic power under Lunatone’s guidance 85 599. |
| Larvesta / Volcarona | Receives specialized attention through the Enjo Clan. Later battles in the Elite Four Invitation Tournament and insists it can continue after winning 414 775 908. |
| Aerodactyl | A resurrected ancient overlord. Restoration with the Gene Potion recovers its former strength and instincts, addressing Yong’s weakness in aerial combat 141 677 678. |
| Rhyhorn | Rescued from a swollen river while feverish; later used in tournament battle 163 220. |
| Rhyperior | Trained with help from Roxanne, Reggie, Cynthia, and Brawly before the Champion Challenge 1028. |
| Larvitar / Pupitar | Hatches under Yong’s care with Guts, Outrage, and Iron Head. Yong envisions it becoming Tyranitar and a future team core; it is later documented as Pupitar 237 588 634. |
| Drilbur / Excadrill | Joins after being offered food, travel, and strong battles. Excadrill later wins through battlefield excavation and quicksand 286 618. |
| Shieldon / Bastiodon | Shieldon demonstrates the strength gap to newly caught Drilbur. Yong later brings Bastiodon food and guides its training in the Magnetic Storm Area 286 434. |
| Scyther / Kleavor | Yong uses black augurite to help Scyther evolve, then integrates Kleavor through shared meals and personalized training 397 398 601. |

| Terrakion | Benefits from Yong’s system talents, which Yong explains as a personal special ability 966. |
| Metagross | Fights alongside Swampert using Great Sumeru Hammer 1065. |

Story Role / Major Arcs
Hoenn Journey and Early Trials
Yong begins his journey eager to meet Pokémon and test himself. While traveling toward Littleroot Town, he treats a poisoned Nuzleaf and fights the Bug Pokémon swarm pursuing it. His early Gym campaign unlocks Rock Solid, while Wattson’s psychological trial forces him to confront the divide between his previous and present identities 1 4 23 48.
Tournament defeats temper his confidence. At Meteor Village, Grandmother confirms that his trust in his partners already places him on the path toward Elite Four level. He subsequently earns the Feather Badge and rescues Rhyhorn during a storm 100 120 163.
Tournament Success and the Temple of the Sea
Yong wins the Elite Tournament, receiving his first League competition championship rewards. He later competes at the Ever Grande Conference, where Heross’s treatment of Pokémon becomes a source of conflict 275 289 328.
Searching for Swampert draws him into the Temple of the Sea with Reggie. There, he encounters the Ranger Team, identifies the danger surrounding Manaphy’s imminent birth, and proposes decisive ways to stop Team Charge. After returning, he recounts the adventure to his family while hiding its near-fatal dangers 347 360.
Sinnoh Training and Battle Zone Pressure
In Sinnoh, Yong expands his team with Kleavor and prioritizes intensive training over rushing Gym challenges. Oreburgh’s unusual lapis lazuli and Iron Island’s magnetic environment become opportunities to develop his partners’ physical strength, energy control, and Force Domains 397 400 409 434.
Steelix’s awakening grants Natural Reversion and Steel Origin. Yong later faces political pressure in the Battle Zone, awakens Battle Will, and enters true Gym Class. By his homecoming after restoring Aerodactyl, his father recognizes him as the holder of two League championships 455 545 568 678 679.
Rock Solid Gym and Kalos
Yong founds the Rock Solid Gym in Kalos. Steelix’s sweep of Doba’s entire team convinces the fitness enthusiast to remain there as an Ace Trainer. Yong also takes Qingcao under his care, recognizing talent that the boy’s circumstances had not allowed him to develop 726 771.
He delegates battlefield responsibilities while traveling for research. A one-on-one encounter with Korrina becomes a registered Pokémon World Championships match, and Excadrill’s subsequent victory provides his first documented ranking-related result 725 726 769 770.
Elite Four Invitational and an Independent Faction
At the Eastern and Western Hemisphere Elite Four Invitational, Yong reunites with old friends and publicly reveals the intensity of his ambition against Kiawe. He then chooses Muren Under the Moon as his second-round opponent, directly challenging the advantages enjoyed by heirs of the Seventeen Families 862 876 895.
The tournament’s visibility provides an opening for his planned research institute and ecological park. With Cynthia’s support, he seeks a faction grounded in his own strength and principles rather than dependence on either the Ishida family or the Stone dynasty 933 934.
Champion Challenge and Alola Voyage
After defeating Wuneng Hao, Yong formally challenges the Hoenn League. He reaches his final Elite Four showdown with Drake nearly three years after beginning his journey, then faces Wallace on a Water Field at Ever Grande City 969 1024 1028.
Wallace ultimately acknowledges his performance and the beginning of a Hoenn League era led by Yong. During the subsequent voyage toward Alola with Cynthia, Yong takes responsibility for Harman’s smuggled Poison Z-Crystal Z-Ring and offers protection against the Poison Black Yi family 1046 1054.
