Background / History

Candice is the only daughter of Snowpoint City's current Gym Leader. Her father sent her traveling to gain experience for the League assessment required to inherit the family Gym. Already interested in becoming a Gym Leader, she set out after graduating from Pokémon School, taking Snover as her starter 15 19.

Her enthusiasm for fashion increasingly disrupted their journey. She would stop to admire outfits and question strangers about their clothing for as long as half an hour. In Hearthome City, despite her father having arranged a Gym appointment with Fantina, Candice became absorbed in a fashionable dress and left Snover to challenge the Gym alone. After losing badly, Snover ran away 15.

Appearance

  • Hair: Twin braids with a thin lock hanging over her forehead 14.
  • Clothing: A school uniform consisting of a white shirt with a bow at the chest, a pale yellow short skirt, and blue-and-white knee-high socks 14 15.
  • Jacket: A blue jacket tied around her waist, which she secures before battling 14 16.
  • Build and bearing: Slender lower legs and an energetic, youthful manner 14.
  • At her first meeting with Qingliu: Torn clothing and socks, with small cuts on her arms from searching through the woods for Snover 15 19.

Personality

Candice is energetic, expressive, and easily swept up by her interests. She recognizes that traveling without anyone to restrain her has worsened her lack of self-control around fashionable things. When Snover responds more readily to Qingliu than to her, she swings between discouragement and determined self-encouragement 15.

Her care for her Pokémon becomes clearest under pressure. She searches the forest alone at night despite getting injured, tries to end Snover's battle when its life appears threatened, and regrets spending time on trends rather than training. Her attempted withdrawal places Snover's safety above proving that they can achieve their shared dream 18 19.

Defeat can shake her confidence, but it does not end her ambition. After Agumon defeats all three of her Pokémon, she questions whether she deserves to inherit the Gym. She later identifies flaws in her commands and resolves to improve and challenge Qingliu again 33 34.

She is also perceptive about other people's intentions. She works out why Qingliu staged a threatening battle to reconcile her with Snover, and later answers a reporter calmly rather than letting him manufacture a romantic story about their friendship 20 39.

Abilities & Skills

Pokémon Knowledge

Candice's school performance and Gym-family upbringing give her a strong grounding in Pokémon knowledge 16 19.

  • Identifies Agumon as unfamiliar and checks her Pokédex rather than claiming to recognize it 16.
  • Tentatively judges Agumon to be Dragon-type from its appearance and opens with Ice Shard 16.
  • Explains the Lost Tower's trial system and directs Qingliu to the Pokémon Center as a place to sell Berries 22.
  • Recognizes Agumon's Pepper Breath during their later encounter and anticipates that Qingliu will stop it before impact 30.

Layered Attacks and Battlefield Concealment

Candice combines moves to conceal attacks, restrict visibility, and keep opponents away from Snover 16 17 18.

  • Hides Leafage behind Icy Wind to complicate Agumon's approach 16.
  • Has Snover move behind its attacks to obscure its position 17.
  • Combines Leafage, Leech Seed, Powder Snow, and Icy Wind to bind Agumon and obscure the battlefield, intending to create an opening to recall Snover 18.
  • These defenses fail against Agumon's speed and firepower 16 17 18.

Team-Battle Coordination

Her father established the foundations of a team-battle system for her future development. Candice uses Snover and Snorunt as supporting attackers while Sneasel applies close-range pressure 31 32.

  • Coordinates Powder Snow, Razor Leaf, and Quick Attack in the trio's opening assault 31.
  • Uses Snorunt's Double Team and Headbutt to make Agumon jump, placing it beneath Sneasel's aerial ambush 32.
  • Has Snover freeze Agumon's joints with Icy Wind while Sneasel prepares Bite 32.
  • Uses Powder Snow and Icy Wind to weaken the expected fire attack, but underestimates the newly learned Small Explosion 32 33.

  • Snover — Her first Pokémon and partner in the goal of inheriting the Gym. Their conflict exposes Candice's neglect, but Snover's willingness to defend her helps restore their bond 15 16 19 20.
  • Qingliu — Friend, traveling companion, and recurring battle opponent. He helps reconcile her with Snover and challenges her assumptions about her potential. Candice explicitly tells reporters that they are “just friends”; Qingliu privately hopes their friendship will help him reach Snowpoint Temple 20 21 23 39.
  • Agumon — Initially an unknown opponent, later a friendly intermediary. Its ability to translate Pokémon speech lets Candice communicate directly with Snover. She promises to keep the information Qingliu shares about it confidential 16 21.
  • Cynthia — An acquaintance Candice initially resented because of her father's comparisons. After spending time with her, Candice comes to admire her, though she remains doubtful about matching Cynthia's strength 23.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Reconciliation with Snover

Candice first meets Qingliu while searching for Snover, which hides behind him rather than returning to her. Qingliu hears both sides of their dispute and criticizes her lack of self-control. When Snover intervenes to defend her, Candice renews her commitment to becoming a qualified Gym Leader alongside it 14 15 16.

Their ensuing battle appears increasingly dangerous, forcing Candice to confront how much Snover matters to her. Qingliu stops Agumon's final attack before it hits; afterward, Candice correctly deduces that the apparent threat was intended to help them reconcile. She thanks him and promises to change her behavior 17 18 19 20.

Solaceon Town and Broader Ambitions

After giving Qingliu a Poké Ball and promising secrecy about Agumon, Candice travels with him to Solaceon Town. Seeing Cynthia prompts a discussion about their different goals. Qingliu encourages Candice to consider becoming the world's number one Gym Leader rather than assuming a Gym Leader must be weaker than a Champion 21 22 23.

Three-on-One Rematch

Following further training, Candice seeks out Qingliu and challenges him again. She accepts his proposal to send all three of her Pokémon against Agumon, and her coordinated strategy briefly traps it in midair 30 31 32.

Small Explosion breaks the trap and critically injures Sneasel; Agumon then defeats Snover and Snorunt. Candice treats Sneasel and, after an initial crisis of confidence, resolves to correct her shortcomings rather than abandon her goal 33 34.

Lost Tower

Candice previously failed on the Lost Tower's first floor, though the mayor considers her close to clearing it. On her return, reporters surround her while Qingliu enters ahead of her. She watches his progress, worries during his prolonged absence from the surveillance feed, and declines to disclose information about his Pokémon 35 38 39 42.

After Qingliu leaves the tower, she is astonished by his account of resolving the fifth-floor incident with Cynthia. Learning that he has agreed to battle Cynthia, she urgently warns that an overwhelming defeat could damage his confidence, while acknowledging that he has the potential to challenge her in the future 50.

Notable Quotes

“Even if I'm not doing well right now, I believe that as long as Snover and I keep working hard together, I'll overcome my little shortcomings and become a qualified Gym Leader.” 16

“I won't give up. I'll keep moving forward with everything I've got, then come challenge you again.” 34

Trivia

  • Qingliu recognizes Candice as a future Snowpoint Gym Leader and remembers her as Zoey's older schoolmate. These are his recollections, not positions she has already attained during the depicted journey 14.
  • Although Candice promises secrecy about Agumon, she does not learn that it is a Digimon or discover Qingliu's Summoning Panel 21.
