Background / History
Agumon lived alone on File Island, hunting and gathering his own food even when doing so exposed him to danger. He had tried sharing food with other Digimon to make friends, but they either disappeared afterward or turned against him. Before meeting Qingliu, he had never had a lasting friend or companion 3.
While fishing beside a creek, Agumon encountered a circular passage and entered out of curiosity. The passage had been created by Qingliu’s Summoning Panel after he completed his exploration of Solaceon Ruins. Agumon’s immediate concern was returning to the stranded fish he had found before they died and lost their freshness 1 3.
Qingliu shared his limited fruit supply with the hungry newcomer. Deeply moved, Agumon accepted only half and resolved to repay him by catching fish. Their friendship value rose from 10 to 60, and Agumon immediately defended his new friend when the ruins’ Unown attacked 3.
Appearance
- Build: A bipedal, small-dinosaur-like creature roughly one meter tall, with sturdy arms and powerful legs 1 16.
- Coloration: Predominantly yellow, with white claw tips on his hands and feet 1.
- Eyes: Large, teal-green, and notably expressive 1 49.
- Claws: Hard and sharp; Razor Claw surrounds them with enormous orange energy claws 1 5 16.
- Comparison: Cynthia finds his build similar to Tyrunt’s, but notes different coloring, stronger arms, and sharper claws 49.
Personality
Agumon is exceptionally brave, sometimes to the point of recklessness. He charges a swarm of more than thirty Unown without regard for their numerical advantage and remains unfazed by the Lost Tower’s Misdreavus, even when they bite his head and arm. Their frightening appearances and screams provoke annoyance rather than fear 4 37.
His loyalty outweighs his appetite. Although food is a major concern, he becomes unable to enjoy a roasted fish after realizing that his prolonged fishing trip may have left Qingliu vulnerable. He stubbornly accepts blame and pursues greater strength so he can protect his first and most important friend 11 25.
Outside battle, Agumon is easygoing, curious, and sometimes scatterbrained. He eagerly studies unfamiliar Pokémon but struggles with long explanations. Unaccustomed to affectionate attention, he becomes embarrassed when Cynthia asks to pet him. Qingliu also notices a slight aversion to dirt 7 21 37 49.
Abilities & Skills
Tough Claws
Agumon’s Pokémon Ability increases the power of attacks made with his claws by 50% 5.
- Raises Razor Claw’s listed power of 40 to an effective 60, matching Pepper Breath’s listed power 1 5.
- Produces a heightened intensity in his claw attacks that Agumon had not experienced before entering the Pokémon world 5.
Pepper Breath
A Fire-type exclusive move with power 60, fired as a fireball from Agumon’s mouth 1.
- Rapid fire: Suppresses the Unown swarm with repeated shots; later fires nearly simultaneous attacks in different directions 4 32.
- Improved endurance: Progresses from thirteen consecutive shots to twenty in a single breath as his level and physical condition improve 10 40.
- Attack interception: Burns through Snover’s Leafage and Icy Wind and neutralizes otherwise unavoidable Acid Spray attacks 17 41.
- Limitations: Agile opponents can dodge individual fireballs. Excessive repetition and poor flame control can injure his mouth despite his fire resistance 26 37.
Razor Claw
A Fire-type exclusive move with power 40 that coats Agumon’s claws in orange energy 1 4.
- Close combat: Delivers powerful strikes capable of sending Snover flying 17.
- Defense: Shreds Leafage projectiles and counters Sneasel’s Metal Claw 16 32.
- Grappling: Uses his energy-coated claws to seize Beedrill and throw it over his shoulder 29.
- Ability synergy: Receives Tough Claws’ 50% power increase 5.
Small Explosion
A Fire-type exclusive move with power 75 that compresses a large amount of energy into a fireball only slightly larger than Pepper Breath 27.
- Destructive force: Leaves a deep, scorched crater in a massive training boulder 27.
- Finishing attack: Defeats the level 19 Skarmory and later helps overcome Candice’s coordinated team 29 34.
- Point-blank use: Finishes Murkrow after Agumon seizes its wing, though the maneuver costs him an arm injury 41.
- Stamina cost: Initially consumes most or all of his available stamina. Conditioning and leveling reduce the burden, but repeated use remains exhausting 27 28 34 41.
- Training terminology: The training sequence also uses the names Baby Burner and Mini Blast; the information panel lists the acquired move as Small Explosion 26 27 28.
Physical Skills and Fearlessness
Years of surviving in the Digital World give Agumon quick reflexes and strong movement skills 16.
- Responds almost immediately to Qingliu’s evasive commands and can leap with enough force to leave deep footprints 16.
- Uses adjoining walls as footholds to reverse direction and approach airborne opponents 37.
- Remains unafraid during Misdreavus’s scare tactics; Mean Look does not deter him because he has no intention of fleeing 37 40.
- Fearlessness does not prevent physical injury: Sneasel’s Metal Claw wounds his shoulder, and Murkrow’s Wing Attack injures his arm 32 41.
Speech and Translation
Agumon can speak human language and translate Pokémon speech 2 21.
- Enables Candice and Snover to communicate directly through him 21.
- Questions the Lost Tower’s fourth-floor guardians on Qingliu’s behalf, although their fear prevents them from explaining what happened 43.
Fishing
Agumon is an experienced fish hunter whose skills developed during his solitary life on File Island 3 9.
- Identifies a large, agile fish from the sound of it entering the water 9.
- Pursues fish underwater and can catch them in his mouth 11.
- Attempts to use Pepper Breath barrages to catch fish, exhausting himself in the process 9 10.
Evolution and Move Learning
- Digivice requirement: Reaching level 20 alone produces no transformation. Evolution becomes available after a Digivice appears and seemingly fuses with Qingliu, suggesting that both the level requirement and Digivice are needed 45.
- Listed thresholds: The evolution interface displays levels 20, 40, 60, and 70, without identifying the resulting forms in the provided passage 45.
- Irreversibility: The panel explicitly warns that evolution cannot be reversed 45.
- Unrealized potential: Qingliu anticipates Champion, Ultimate, and Mega forms, including WarGreymon, but these remain expectations rather than achieved transformations 2.
- Move compatibility: Learning Small Explosion demonstrates that Agumon can acquire a move associated with other Agumon variants. Learning Pokémon moves remains Qingliu’s hypothesis; the panel still lists no known Pokémon moves at level 20 26 27 45.
Base Stats
The same base stats are displayed on arrival and at level 20 1 45.
Equipment / Items
- Poké Ball — Supplied by Candice and subsequently used by Qingliu to recall Agumon. Keeping him inside also helps conceal his unusual appearance from townspeople and reporters 21 25 38 44.
- Pokéblocks — Training food used to relieve hunger and support recovery after strenuous attacks 27 41.
- Heal Spray — Applied by Qingliu to treat mouth injuries from flame-control training and wounds sustained in battle 26 41.
- Digivice — Connected to Qingliu rather than carried by Agumon; its appearance enables Agumon’s evolution prompt 45.
Relationships
- Qingliu — First genuine friend, trainer, and most important companion. Their friendship rises from 10 to 60 after sharing fruit, then to 70 after Qingliu insists that they face danger and responsibility together 3 12 27.
- Candice — Friend and recurring battle opponent. Provides Agumon’s Poké Ball and grows close to him through his easygoing manner and ability to translate Pokémon speech 21 31 34.
- Snover — Initially an opponent in the battle Qingliu uses to repair Snover’s bond with Candice; afterward communicates with Candice through Agumon 16 19 21.
- Cynthia — Offers to vouch for Agumon publicly and have her family contact Professor Oak to register his basic information as an ancient Pokémon. Agumon permits her to pet him 49.
- Spiritomb — Initially a threatening presence in the Lost Tower. After its condition improves, it expresses interest in battling Agumon; their trainers arrange a match for the following day 44 48.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Solaceon Ruins and Early Travels
- Protects Qingliu from the hostile Unown, establishing their partnership through their first battle 3 4 5.
- Helps gather food while traveling toward Solaceon Town. His prolonged fishing trip and Aipom’s theft trigger his guilt over leaving Qingliu alone 9 11 12.
- Overwhelms Candice’s Snover in a battle intended to make Candice and Snover confront their relationship problems together 16 17 18 19.
Special Training and Forest Battles
- Trains variations of his existing attacks because Qingliu cannot afford Technical Machines 25.
- Becomes so feared through repeated victories that local Pokémon flee, depriving Qingliu of suitable training opponents 29.
- Faces Candice’s Sneasel, Snover, and Snorunt simultaneously, testing his new finisher against coordinated attacks 31 32 34.
Lost Tower
- Clears the first four floors, using close-range positioning and concentrated firepower against evasive opponents 37 38 40 41 44.
- Continues despite mounting exhaustion, requesting all ten remaining Pokéblocks so he can recover and keep fighting 41.
- Senses Spiritomb approaching before Qingliu tries to retreat; the encounter coincides with the panel’s renewed summoning activity and the subsequent Digivice appearance 44 45.
Recognition and Cynthia’s Challenge
- His rarity motivates Qingliu to hide his true origins and choose a remote location for the planned Spiritomb battle 21 48 49.
- Cynthia’s offer of registration and public support provides a possible way to protect him from unwanted attention; the registration itself is not shown as completed 49.
Notable Quotes

“If I'm strong enough, I can help you, wherever you are and whoever you're facing.” 25
Trivia
- This Agumon is not Taichi Yagami’s partner and knows neither Taichi nor any DigiDestined 3.
- Candice’s Pokédex initially identifies him only as a mysterious Pokémon with no available data 16.
- Qingliu notices that Agumon has an “exclusive moves” field absent from the other Pokémon panels he has examined, while his separate learned-moves field remains empty 25.
