Background / History
Geto was born into an ordinary family with two non-sorcerer parents. His jujutsu talent was discovered by someone from Jujutsu Society, who recruited him for Tokyo Jujutsu High. When he first met Chinatsu, he had only recently learned what a jujutsu sorcerer was; he was approximately one or two years younger than the Gojo twins 18.
He entered Jujutsu High alongside Chinatsu, Satoru Gojo, and Shoko Ieiri. Although new to formal jujutsu education, he was academically advanced: during Yaga’s first-year English lesson, he read a privately purchased textbook covering second-year material 21 22.
By his third year, Geto combined missions with work as a combat instructor at Jujutsu High. His skill with the three-section staff attracted younger students and helped train future sorcerers in close-range combat 49.
Appearance
- Eyes: Narrow, often further narrowed when he smiles 17 33.
- Hair: Tied in a bun, with a lock of bangs falling over the left side of his forehead 17.
- Accessories: Earlobe-shaped studs 17.
- Manner of walking: Adopts an exaggerated forward-leaning swagger alongside Satoru, compared by the narration to an elderly person’s severe stoop 23 31.
Personality
Geto speaks gently and treats others considerately. When Satoru tells him their rapid mission-clearing is leaving other sorcerers without work, Geto suggests slowing down because some rely on those assignments to support their families. He also refuses the Gojo Elder’s offer of access to the clan’s cursed-tool vault rather than casually accepting such a valuable favor 18 23 25.
His central conviction is that the strong should protect the weak. After feeling carried by Chinatsu during their first mission, he reassures himself that his talent will let him become someone capable of protecting others. Chinatsu nevertheless considers this commitment dangerously extreme: she fears that losing the belief supporting him could send him toward the opposite extreme 19 44.
He is diligent, confident in his potential, and enthusiastic about close combat. He arrives early for enrollment, studies ahead, and works until he can afford Playful Cloud himself. His confidence grows after his Grade 1 promotion, though he retains a practical attitude toward rank—his immediate question about becoming Special Grade is whether missions will pay more 21 22 23 47.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Spirit Manipulation
Geto’s innate technique allows him to subjugate cursed spirits, retain them, and summon them under his control. Its storage capacity has no stated upper limit 18.
- Subjugation: Converts a spirit into a black sphere that he must swallow to complete its acquisition 19.
- Direct capture: Can bypass the subjugation ritual and capture a spirit by touching it when the strength difference is sufficiently large 18.
- Combat deployment: Summons multiple spirits without the talismans or other mediums required by some spirit-controlling techniques 33.
- Utility: Uses a tiny cursed spirit to undo the idol agency’s entrance lock without destroying it 18.
- Protection and monitoring: Assigns spirits to guard Riko Amanai remotely. Their mental connections breaking alerts him that they have been exorcised 33.
- Acquisition burden: Stronger targets can make subjugation arduous, and swallowing the resulting spheres is intensely unpleasant. He describes their taste as a rag soaked in vomit 19.
Close-Combat and Staff Fighting
Geto develops his close-range fighting around Playful Cloud, reducing his dependence on consuming every cursed spirit he encounters 27.
- Exorcises low-level spirits with the staff instead of adding them indiscriminately to his collection 27.
- Carries the three-section staff coiled around his waistband and can draw it during battle 33.
- Rapidly closes the distance to an enemy sorcerer and strikes hard enough to send him through a window 33.
- Later teaches younger students, with his staff proficiency becoming a defining feature of his instruction 49.
Cursed-Energy Weapon Coating
Geto can gradually coat ordinary weapons with cursed energy, temporarily allowing them to compete with cursed tools 47.
- Demonstrates the method with an unsharpened sword, making it sharp enough to cut a falling leaf.
- Emphasizes building the coating gently and in stages; a sudden large infusion can break an ordinary weapon.
- Recommends actual cursed tools for beginners who lack sufficient control 47.
Early Training Limitations
- Cannot erect a Curtain when he first teams up with Chinatsu, so she establishes the mission barrier 18.
- Requires Chinatsu’s restraint to safely subjugate the peak Grade 1 spirit while his own strength is around Grade 2 or Semi-Grade 1 19.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Playful Cloud — A Special Grade three-section staff whose power depends on its wielder’s physical strength rather than an embedded cursed technique. Chinatsu buys it for one billion yen and initially lends it to Geto; he later saves the same amount and purchases it from her 26 27 47.
- Cursed-spirit collection — Initially includes a small lock-opening spirit and, after his first mission with Chinatsu, a peak Grade 1 female spirit wielding a red blade. His later collection prioritizes elite spirits over sheer indiscriminate accumulation 18 19 47.
Relationships
- Chinatsu — Classmate, first mission partner, and benefactor. She helps him acquire a powerful spirit, recognizes the distress caused by consuming spirits, cooks meals to help relieve his stress, and lends him Playful Cloud 18 19 24 27.
- Satoru Gojo — Best friend and partner in the “strongest duo.” They complete missions together, spend leisure time at arcades and basketball games, and continue partnering into their third year 23 30 44 49.
- Shoko Ieiri — Classmate who joins him in examining Chinatsu’s cursed tool and attending the Kagoshima auction 22 24 25.
- Masamichi Yaga — Teacher who supervises his class, assigns the Star Plasma Vessel mission, and announces his Special Grade designation 22 30 47.
- Riko Amanai — Protection target. Geto rescues her, arranges cursed-spirit guards, and promises to defend her choice if she refuses assimilation with Tengen 31 33 37.
- Misato Kuroi — Fellow protector of Riko. He accepts part of the responsibility for her kidnapping and later escorts both her and Riko home 35 39.
- Yu Haibara — Junior and combat pupil who admires him intensely. Chinatsu worries that Haibara’s death could jeopardize Geto’s mental stability 44 47.
- Kento Nanami — Junior whom Geto teaches alongside Haibara 47.
- Parents — Non-sorcerers; still in contact with him before enrollment, including checking why he has not returned home for dinner 18 19.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Mission with Chinatsu
Geto approaches Chinatsu outside a deserted idol agency and proposes teaming up. After his spirit opens the entrance, Chinatsu immobilizes the powerful curse inside, allowing him to add it to his collection. Her concern about the taste of cursed spirits surprises him because no one—including his parents—has previously asked about that burden 17 18 19.
Star Plasma Vessel Escort
Assigned to protect Riko alongside the Gojo twins, Geto retrieves her from danger and later responds when her cursed-spirit guards are exorcised at school. He defeats an attacking sorcerer with Playful Cloud and participates in the group’s rescue of Kuroi and stay in Okinawa 30 31 33 35.
During Toji Fushiguro’s ambush, Geto takes Riko and Kuroi deeper into Jujutsu High while the twins confront the assassin. At the Tombs of the Star Corridor, he offers Riko the option to reject assimilation and promises protection. After the confrontation ends, Riko survives without merging, and Geto escorts her and Kuroi home 36 37 39.
Chinatsu’s Efforts to Prevent His Collapse
The narration distinguishes Geto’s current life from his fate in the original story, where disillusionment led him to pursue the extermination of non-sorcerers and kill his own parents. Those events are presented as the future Chinatsu hopes to prevent, not as actions he has committed in this timeline 18 19.
Chinatsu addresses the recurring burden of consuming curses through enjoyable meals and an alternative fighting style built around Playful Cloud. These changes make his life more comfortable, but she remains concerned that his extreme convictions leave him vulnerable to collapse. Her later encounter with villagers abusing Nanako and Mimiko brings her face-to-face with another source of his original disillusionment 24 27 44 49 50.

“Yeah, they taste awful. I don't know if this is the right way to describe it, but to me, a cursed spirit tastes like a rag soaked in vomit. It's absolutely disgusting...” 19
