Background / History
Final Selection
Giyu trained under Sakonji Urokodaki alongside Sabito. During Final Selection, Sabito entrusted the unconscious Giyu to Murata, who was carrying him to safety when Haruto encountered them. After spending half a day unconscious, Giyu recovered and joined Haruto and Sabito in fighting demons 4 6.
Learning that the Hand Demon had nearly killed Sabito left Giyu visibly pale. He fought desperately to reduce the burden on his friend, whose sword had broken. All three passed the selection and were subsequently hosted by Kagaya and Amane Ubuyashiki 6.
Hirano Investigation
Giyu arrived in Hirano with his Kasugai Crow, Kansaburo, and located Haruto through reports of a handsome, white-haired challenger at an eating contest. When Haruto’s opponent, Yato Kazuma, began choking, Giyu intervened with water and a strike from his sword hilt 14.
He accompanied Haruto in investigating the missing fishermen. Rather than attack Nure-onna immediately, they followed her to the coast and overheard information linking her and the Ox Demon to Doma, Upper Rank Two. Giyu fought the Ox Demon while Haruto confronted Nure-onna, then combined his Water Surface Slash with Haruto’s Unknowing Fire to behead the Ox Demon 15 16.
Life on Mount Sagiri
When Haruto built a house near Urokodaki’s home, Giyu and Sabito arrived with their bedding to move in. Urokodaki wanted the three to share a training schedule and considered living together safer. Their routine required climbing the mountain at six each morning and returning before noon to receive lunch 19.
Giyu continued training and taking missions while helping his friends between assignments. He and Sabito carried the recovering Haruto back to Mount Sagiri after the battle with Byōha. Later, a leg injury confined Giyu to a wicker bed, though he still participated in looking after Genya during training 24 25 41.
Battle with Nekomata
A routine patrol on Mount Kumotori became a battle against Lower Rank Four Nekomata. Giyu and Sabito noticed that the demon seemed urgently concerned with leaving or confirming information, rather than merely fighting them, and resolved not to let it escape 50.
They used a coordinated distraction-and-ambush tactic: Sabito attacked openly while Giyu approached from concealment. Nekomata evaded Sabito’s strike and crushed his chest, leaving its own neck exposed. Giyu hesitated, feeling that taking the kill would mean stealing the victory—and the Water Hashira position—from Sabito. He nevertheless beheaded Nekomata with Constant Flux, then landed beside his fallen friend and sighed. Sabito was reported near death and transported to the Butterfly Mansion 50.
Appearance
- Hair: Messy black hair 13.
- Eyes: Deep blue; his impassive gaze is also described as “dead-fish eyes” 13 41.
- Clothing: Seen wearing a dark red haori 13.
- Expression: Usually expressionless or scowling, which initially makes him appear arrogant or unapproachable 4 6 7.
Personality
Giyu’s stern appearance conceals a kindhearted, somewhat timid personality. Haruto initially considers him difficult to get along with, but revises that judgment after fighting beside him. Sabito likewise describes him as a “scaredy-cat,” despite his habitual scowl 4 6 7.
His difficulty expressing himself repeatedly creates misunderstandings. He comments loudly on the unusual atmosphere when Sabito gives Makomo a bracelet, interrupting their affectionate moment. During Genya’s training, his sincere advice not to overexert himself sounds like mockery because of his flat delivery and expressionless face 25 41.
Giyu places greater value on Sabito than on securing a Hashira title. He tells Sabito that being a Hashira is not especially important to him and wants to avoid receiving the Water Hashira position without earning it. This concern becomes painful hesitation when Sabito’s sacrifice gives him the opportunity to kill Nekomata 50.
Abilities & Skills
