Background / History
Destruction of the Shinazugawa Family
After their abusive father’s death, Genya and Sanemi hoped to protect their remaining family together. That hope ended when their mother became a demon and killed their five younger siblings. Genya survived with facial wounds and encountered Haruto restraining her. Believing Haruto was hurting his mother, he fired brass pellets at him with his slingshot; Haruto deflected the shots and disarmed him 28 29.
Unable to accept having their mother beheaded, Sanemi carried her outside to die in sunlight. He then left to hunt demons, asking Haruto to care for Genya. Genya furiously searched for his brother and eventually fell asleep near bloodstains Sanemi had left behind. With no living uncle available to take him in, Haruto brought him to Mount Sagiri 30.
Training and Discovery of His Constitution
Genya asked Haruto to teach him how to kill demons, partly because he wanted to follow the same path as Sanemi. He joined the mountain’s daily training but could not learn either Water Breathing or Flame Breathing. Comments visible to Haruto identified him as a “demon eater,” prompting Haruto to investigate 30.
On a mission to a livestock farm, Genya sensed that the subdued demon could give him energy. Eating its flesh triggered his first temporary transformation. Kagaya subsequently identified the constitution from Corps records and directed Haruto to Tamayo in Asakusa 31.
Tamayo’s finger produced a stronger transformation and allowed Genya to copy her Blood Demon Art. Meeting a demon who treated human patients also unsettled his belief that powerful demons were invariably evil. Haruto explained that tragic circumstances did not excuse harming innocents and that Tamayo was an exceptional case 35.
Renewed Contact with Sanemi
Sanemi secretly visited Mount Sagiri and watched Genya train, but refused to meet him. He believed Genya hated him for leaving and wanted to keep him away from demon hunting. Haruto challenged those assumptions and later told Genya about the visit. Rather than resenting Sanemi, Genya was pleased that his brother had checked on him and became noticeably more cheerful 42 43 44.
Genya later sought Sanemi out at the Butterfly Mansion, where his brother was recovering. He persisted despite Masachika Kume’s evasions and immediately worried that Sanemi had been injured again 47 48.
Appearance
- Mohawk: His most recognizable feature, retained throughout his time at Mount Sagiri; the back of his head is shaved 29 31 36.
- Facial scars: Left by his mother’s attack after she became a demon 30 35 43.
- Stern expression: Commonly appears stiff or unapproachable, despite being a considerate child 30 49.
- Temporary demonic traits: Blackened eye whites with tiny pupils, prominent veins, and sharp fangs. Tamayo’s flesh also produces a purplish-blue tongue and demonic claws 31 35.
Personality
Genya is reserved, prickly, and especially sensitive about Sanemi. Although he reacts furiously to his brother’s departure, he does not hate him. He directs his grief toward the unknown person responsible for turning their mother into a demon, rather than blaming his mother, Haruto, or Sanemi 30 35 43.
He is determined to prove himself and can mistake concern for condescension. During weight training, Giyu’s suggestion that he put down a log only makes him push harder, despite severe exhaustion. He is also fiercely loyal to Haruto, defending his teacher when Yushiro insults him 32 41.
Life at Mount Sagiri gradually softens his manner. He helps Makomo prepare dinner and volunteers to wash dishes even when offered the chance to spend time with Sanemi. Learning that his brother still watches over him lifts much of his habitual gloom 36 44 49.
Abilities & Skills
Demon Eater Constitution
Eating demon flesh temporarily grants Genya a demon’s constitution without permanently changing his species 31.
- Physical enhancement: His first transformation greatly increases his strength and improves his sword performance 31.
- Retained humanity: During that test, he remains clearheaded and reports no desire to eat humans 31.
- Source-dependent power: According to Kagaya’s records, stronger demons grant greater strength and regenerative ability; further transformation can provide their Blood Demon Arts 31.
- Temporary effects: His first transformation subsides, with the remaining fangs falling out a few days later 31.
- Slow conversion: His young body struggles to digest Tamayo’s flesh and blood. Tamayo warns against letting him face demons alone until he can convert them quickly enough 35.
- Rarity: The previous recorded appearance of this constitution was three hundred years earlier 31.
Bewitching Blood-Daylight Demon Fragrance
Genya reproduces Tamayo’s Blood Demon Art after consuming her finger, releasing a strange fragrance by cutting his arm with his demonic claws 35.
- The original technique impairs brain function and encourages targets to reveal protected secrets 35.
- Genya’s weaker version makes Haruto’s thoughts sluggish; Tamayo intervenes by covering Haruto’s face with a towel 35.
Marksmanship
Genya is quick and accurate with a slingshot 29.
- Hunts birds in the mountains to provide extra food for his younger siblings 29.
- Fires two shots at Haruto during the confrontation over his mother, though both are deflected 29.
Taste and Sword Training
- Exceptional taste: Can identify every seasoning in Makomo’s soup from a single sip 31.
- Sword practice: Trains with a Nichirin Blade and performs a sword routine during his first transformation 30 31.
- Breathing limitation: Cannot learn Breathing Styles, preventing Haruto’s original plan to have him inherit Star Breathing 30 35.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Brass slingshot and brass pellets — Used for bird hunting and briefly against Haruto 29.
- Giyu’s old sword — Used during his early training at Mount Sagiri 30.
- Training weights and log — Used for physical conditioning 41 42.
- Haruto’s former basket — Carries it while waiting outside Corps headquarters 47.
Relationships
- Sanemi Shinazugawa — Older brother and only surviving immediate family member. Genya wants to follow his path, while Sanemi tries to keep him safe from demons; their apparent estrangement does not erase Genya’s affection 30 43 48.
- Haruto Takanashi — Guardian and teacher. Takes him in, investigates his constitution, and defends his potential despite his inability to use Breathing Styles 30 31 43.
- Tamayo — Physician who tests his ability and advises Haruto on its limitations. Her kindness challenges Genya’s understanding of demons 35.
- Sabito — Training companion who worries about Genya accompanying Haruto on a mission and later trains alongside him 31 41.
- Makomo — Treats his facial wounds and shares household work with him 30 36.
- Giyu Tomioka — Fellow Mount Sagiri resident whose old sword Genya uses. Giyu’s expressionless concern can unintentionally provoke him 30 41.
- Yushiro — Frequently clashes with Genya, insulting Haruto and objecting to Tamayo sacrificing a finger for the experiment 32 34 35.
Research Significance
- Tamayo uses blood from Genya’s transformed state in an experimental drug intended to give humans demon-like healing while preserving their humanity 49.
- The project faces major development and testing obstacles: ordinary people may not withstand the drug, and Kagaya will not allow experimentation on Corps swordsmen. Tamayo sets it aside to focus on a drug against Muzan 49.
