Background / History
Tamayo once ate humans before regaining control of herself. After breaking free of Muzan Kibutsuji, she spent many years modifying her body so that she could survive without eating people. She still requires regular amounts of human blood, which she and Yushiro previously obtained by purchasing it 33 48.
She established herself as a physician in Asakusa, treating human patients while secretly collaborating with Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Neither she nor Kagaya explains to Haruto when their association began 33 34 35.
Kagaya sends Haruto and Genya to consult her about Genya’s Demon Eater constitution. During their visit, Tamayo also tests Haruto’s unusual blood and discovers that drinking it makes her vividly re-experience fragments of her own recent past. She collects a further sample for medical research and supplies her own flesh to test Genya’s ability 31 33 34.
After the visit, Tamayo and Haruto maintain correspondence through Cang Kong. Haruto supplies blood for her research and occasionally sends an extra vial for her to drink; she sends pills made from her own flesh and blood for Genya’s emergencies. Haruto later introduces her expertise to the Kocho sisters for their poison work 36 41.
Appearance
Tamayo has a refined, dignified appearance that Haruto compares to royalty, sharply contrasting with the visibly monstrous demons he has previously encountered 33.
- Hair: Black, gathered into an elegant bun 33.
- Eyes: Purple 33.
- Skin: Snow-white, without the bulging facial veins or bloodshot eyes Haruto associates with demons 33.
- Clothing: A dark kimono patterned with blooming flowers; she wears a white physician’s coat and gloves during examinations 33.
Personality
Tamayo speaks gently and treats both human patients and visitors with warmth. She reassures Genya during his examination, protects Haruto when he inhales a harmful fragrance, and firmly reins in Yushiro’s hostility 33 35.
Her composure does not mean she is indifferent to pain or temptation. She voluntarily breaks off a finger for Genya’s test despite the pain, and openly admits that Haruto’s blood briefly made her wonder whether draining him could let her revisit people she longs to see. She presents that temptation as a warning about the danger his blood poses 34.
Her research is directed toward defeating Muzan and reducing human casualties. She readily agrees to projects that offer a chance to kill him, but shelves her proposed human-enhancement drug after acknowledging its excessive risks. Haruto regards her resolve and hatred of Muzan as exceptional 35 41 49.
Abilities & Skills
Blood Demon Art: Bewitching Blood-Daylight Demon Fragrance
Tamayo’s blood releases a fragrance that impairs brain function and coaxes targets into revealing secrets they wish to protect 35.
- Genya reproduces a weaker version after eating a single one of her fingers 35.
- His version makes Haruto’s thoughts sluggish after inhalation 35.
- Excessive exposure harms humans; Yushiro believes it can cause lasting cognitive damage 35.
- Tamayo covers Haruto’s face with a towel, then prescribes medicine to clear his mind and calm his nerves once the fragrance disperses 35.
Modified Demonic Physiology
Tamayo has altered her body to eliminate the need to eat humans, though she still needs human blood to sustain herself 33.
- Regeneration: A replacement finger grows after she removes one for Genya’s experiment 34.
- Pain remains: The injury visibly causes discomfort despite her regeneration 34.
- Strength relative to Yushiro: She rejects his offer to provide flesh for the test because he is not yet strong enough 34.
Medicine and Pharmacology
Tamayo treats human patients, studies unusual blood and constitutions, and develops medicines intended to support the fight against demons 34 35 41.
| Project / Treatment | Purpose | Documented outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Drug against Muzan | Weaken Muzan Kibutsuji | Already under development when Haruto visits; becomes her priority after the enhancement project is shelved 34 49. |
| Haruto’s blood research | Investigate its unusual effects and possible medicinal applications | She retains samples and continues studying them through correspondence 34 35 36. |
| Human-enhancement drug | Use Genya’s blood after demon transformation to give humans demon-like healing without sacrificing their humanity | Shelved because ordinary people might not withstand it, trials would be difficult, and Kagaya would not permit experiments on swordsmen 49. |
| Poison formulation | Assist the Kocho sisters’ anti-demon poison work | Discusses the proportions of poison used in Shinobu’s Nichirin Blade with Kanae 41 49. |
| Demon-flesh pills | Give Genya an emergency supply for his Demon Eater ability | Sends pills made from her own flesh and blood to Haruto 36. |
Demon Eater Research
Tamayo tests Genya’s ability by giving him her severed finger. His successful reproduction of her Blood Demon Art astonishes her 34 35.
- Identifies his youth and insufficient physical development as likely reasons for his slow digestion of her flesh and blood 35.
- Expects his conversion speed to improve as his body matures 35.
- Warns Haruto not to let Genya fight demons alone until he can digest demon material quickly 35.
Response to Haruto’s Blood
Drinking Haruto’s blood produces vivid fragments of Tamayo’s own recent memories, experienced as though she were watching another version of herself 34.
- The fragments include treating a patient, sending Chachamaru to fetch Haruto, and changing clothes before the examination 34.
- She cannot alter the events she observes; whether more blood could change this remains speculation 34.
- The effect fades after she metabolizes the blood 34.
- She remains interested in the experience and sometimes receives additional blood to drink 36.

- Genya Shinazugawa — Research subject and recipient of her demon-flesh pills. Meeting her challenges his belief that all powerful demons are necessarily cruel 35 36.
- Kanae Kocho — Medical collaborator who considers Tamayo and Yushiro evidence that her hope of redeeming demons is not misplaced 48 49.
