Background / History
Former Water Hashira
Urokodaki was once the Water Hashira, placing him among the Demon Slayer Corps’ strongest swordsmen. His duties included capturing demons and transporting them to Mount Fujikasane for Final Selection—a task he remembered as a nuisance 4 16.
After becoming an instructor, he repeatedly lost students during Final Selection. These deaths caused him to close himself off emotionally and stop accepting new pupils. Giyu Tomioka’s referral persuaded him to make an exception for Tanjiro 9.
Training the Kamado Siblings
Urokodaki first meets the siblings after Tanjiro kills a demon using Chinatsu’s plan. He praises Tanjiro’s decisive attack but refuses to count it as proof of his own ability. Instead, he takes the siblings to his mountain home and sends Tanjiro through a rigorous mountain trial while looking after his sisters 4.
While examining Chinatsu’s injuries, Urokodaki discovers regeneration beyond ordinary human capabilities. Her tolerance for sunlight and lack of bloodlust lead him to suspect an unusual bodily change rather than a condition identical to Nezuko’s 5.
Tanjiro begins with lessons about demons, mountain-trap exercises, and sword handling. Once Chinatsu recovers, Urokodaki accepts her into the swordsmanship lessons as well. Their rapid progress repeatedly forces him to rewrite his training plans 5 6 8.
When Tanjiro demonstrates Hinokami Kagura, Urokodaki tentatively classifies it as an offshoot Breathing Style. Unable to identify its origin, he focuses on its immediate danger: the severe strain it places on Tanjiro’s body. He advises the siblings to build a stronger foundation before practicing it 9.
After one year, Urokodaki believes he has little left to teach them, but fears losing more students. He makes mastery of Total Concentration: Constant their final requirement. Two years after their arrival, he permits them to enter Final Selection, gives them Disaster-Repelling Masks, and promises to care for Nezuko 9 10 11.
Final Selection and Reunion
At Mount Fujikasane, the siblings kill the mutated demon responsible for many of Urokodaki’s losses. The demon claims to have eaten fourteen of his students and identifies his pupils by their Disaster-Repelling Masks 11 13.
Their safe return overwhelms Urokodaki with relief, and he embraces all three siblings. Learning that they also killed most of the mountain’s demons reminds him of Sabito’s ambition to clear the mountain. He takes some amusement in the replenishment work this will create for the Corps 16.
Teaching and Protecting Nezuko
After Nezuko awakens, Urokodaki agrees to let her remove her bamboo muzzle at home. He also proposes that she replenishes her strength through sleep because she does not eat humans 16.
Although he has never seen a demon use a Breathing Style, he agrees to teach Nezuko Water Breathing. Lessons take place indoors because of her presumed vulnerability to sunlight, with her frequent need for sleep limiting practice time 18.
Before the siblings leave on their first mission, Urokodaki provides a special wooden box for Nezuko. He later sends the Corps leader a letter vouching for her; both he and Giyu pledge their lives as guarantees of her trustworthiness 19 38.
Appearance
Urokodaki is an elderly man whose face is usually concealed by a Tengu Mask 4.
- Crow Tengu Mask: Covers his face during training and daily life; he lifts it slightly to drink miso soup 16 18.
- Unexpected physical capability: His speed while pushing Chinatsu’s wheelchair sharply contrasts with his age and build 4.
Personality
Urokodaki is a demanding instructor who values resolve, independent judgment, and sound technique. He questions Chinatsu about her backup plan during their first meeting and requires Tanjiro to prove himself separately from his sister’s strategy. His discipline can be brutal: he has broken Tanjiro’s bones for insufficient progress and proposed striking students with a club whenever their breathing concentration lapses 4 7 43.
His severity is paired with a deep fear of losing his pupils. He willingly revises training plans to improve their chances of survival and delays Final Selection until they learn an advanced breathing technique. When the siblings return safely, his stern manner gives way to an emotional embrace 8 9 16.
At home, he prepares meals and calls the siblings in from practice. He is also willing to reconsider unfamiliar ideas, accepting both their proposal for peer-supervised training and the possibility of teaching a demon Water Breathing 17 18 43.
Abilities & Skills
Water Breathing and Swordsmanship
A former Water Hashira, Urokodaki teaches basic sword mechanics before introducing Water Breathing 4 5.
- Demonstrates correct blade alignment by effortlessly cutting a wooden post in half 6.
- Teaches the importance of directing force along the blade rather than applying lateral pressure that could break it 6.
- Does not know the Eleventh Form created by Giyu Tomioka; the narration also notes that his age separates his current ability from his prime 48.
Total Concentration: Constant Instruction
Urokodaki teaches the principles of maintaining Total Concentration Breathing over extended periods 9 10.
- Explains that sustained breathing improves physical fitness and supports consistent speed and strength 10.
- Accepts Chinatsu’s suggestion that the siblings monitor one another, leaving him to provide principles and practical tips 43.
- Both students master the technique before entering Final Selection 12.
Speed and Silent Movement
Urokodaki can approach without audible footsteps and move at remarkable speed 4.
- Appears behind the siblings and later behind Tanjiro without making a sound 4.
- Pushes Chinatsu’s wheelchair over a long journey while Tanjiro struggles to keep pace 4.
“Bone-Shattering Fist” and Healing
Tanjiro calls Urokodaki’s punitive punches the “Bone-Shattering Fist” 7.
- Can break bones with a single punch 7.
- Can heal the fractures exceptionally quickly, leaving the bones stronger than before 7.
Knowledge of Demons
Urokodaki teaches demon physiology, combat risks, and Blood Demon Arts 5 16.
- Recognizes Chinatsu’s abnormal regeneration while distinguishing it from familiar demonic weaknesses 5.
- Offers sleep-based recovery as an explanation for Nezuko’s prolonged rest, explicitly as a theory 16.
