Background / History

Tanjiro grew up as the eldest son of the Kamado family. His father's poor health and early death left him helping his mother support the household. He chopped wood and handled important family matters, while Chinatsu cooked and cared for the younger children and Nezuko helped with childcare and sewing 6 16.

He was away when Muzan attacked their home. After finding Nezuko alive but transformed into a demon, he sought help and encountered Giyu Tomioka. Returning home, he discovered that the gravely wounded Chinatsu was also breathing and carried her to a village doctor 1 2.

Tanjiro bought Chinatsu a wooden wheelchair on credit before returning to bury their mother and younger siblings. At their graves, he vowed to avenge the family and restore Nezuko's humanity. Following Giyu's recommendation, he set out for Sakonji Urokodaki with both surviving sisters 2.

Appearance

• Brown hair and red eyes — his eyes are described as becoming a fiercer crimson when he hears the details of his family's massacre 5 24.
• Hanafuda-patterned earrings — Shinjuro Rengoku recognizes them as a sign associated with Sun Breathing 50.
• Exceptionally hard skull — Chinatsu avoids striking his forehead too hard because doing so would hurt her own hand 12 20.

Personality

Tanjiro is cheerful, considerate, and intensely protective of his family. Even while exhausted, he carries Chinatsu down the mountain to seek medical help, arranges a wheelchair for her, and resolves to protect both sisters. He becomes tearful when Nezuko finally awakens after two years 1 2 16.

He admires Chinatsu rather than resenting her superior strength. Her progress motivates him to improve, and he readily accepts her instruction. However, repeatedly training against Chinatsu and Urokodaki leaves him underestimating himself until Final Selection reveals how easily he can defeat ordinary demons 6 8 12.

His compassion does not prevent him from killing human-eating demons. He generally prefers a quick, single-stroke death, though the Hand Demon's cruelty makes him willing to use the more painful Hinokami Kagura. Against human sparring partners, he unconsciously holds back—a habit that limits the usefulness of his bouts with Chinatsu 13 41.

Muzan's scent can provoke an immediate, angry reaction, but Tanjiro remains capable of accepting restraint. When Chinatsu stops him from pursuing Muzan in Asakusa, he acknowledges that they are not yet strong enough to win 24.

Tanjiro's nose serves as both a tracking tool and a means of perceiving information others miss 20 43.

Tanjiro inherited Hinokami Kagura's specialized breathing method from his father. Although the entire family watched the dance annually, he alone initially knew the breathing method and later taught it to Chinatsu 8 9.
