Background / History

Life in the Kamado Family

Before becoming a demon, Nezuko helped care for the younger children and did sewing. She also styled and sometimes cut family members’ hair to save the expense of visiting a barber. Like the other Kamado children, she watched her father perform Hinokami Kagura, but did not learn its specialized breathing method; she considered Tanjiro knowing it sufficient 6 8 22.

Massacre and Prolonged Sleep

Tanjiro found Nezuko bloodied but still warm after Muzan slaughtered their family and carried her down the mountain to seek medical help. After becoming a demon and regaining awareness, she accompanied him back home, where they discovered that Chinatsu was also alive. Nezuko helped bring her injured sister to a village doctor and refused to let Tanjiro put her down 1.

After burying their mother and younger siblings, Tanjiro vowed to avenge them and restore Nezuko’s humanity. The three surviving siblings traveled toward Mount Sagiri to find Sakonji Urokodaki, with Nezuko riding in a basket on Tanjiro’s back 2 3.

Nezuko slept throughout the siblings’ two years of training, although she retained a vague awareness of her surroundings. She awakened around their return from Final Selection and rushed outside after sensing them nearby. At Chinatsu’s request, Urokodaki allowed her to remove her bamboo muzzle at home, letting her speak with her family again 10 16.

Missions and Corps Acceptance

Nezuko joined Chinatsu and Tanjiro on their missions while continuing her swordsmanship lessons. Tamayo took a blood sample from her for research, and Tanjiro agreed to collect blood from powerful demons to help find a way to restore her humanity 19 24 31.

On Spider Mountain, Nezuko intervened against demons attacking Tanjiro and Zenitsu. Shinobu subsequently tried to strike her, but Tanjiro blocked the attack and insisted that Nezuko had never eaten anyone. Her identity could no longer remain hidden, so Giyu brought the siblings to Corps headquarters 35 36 37.

There, Oyakata-sama asked the Pillars to trust her, revealing that Urokodaki and Giyu had pledged their lives as guarantees. Nezuko resisted Sanemi’s exceptionally tempting blood, earning his reluctant acceptance 38 39.

Overcoming Sunlight

When the others rushed to the Training Ground after an explosion, Nezuko feared that her siblings were in danger. Remembering Chinatsu’s suggestion that she might someday overcome sunlight, she tested exposure without supervision. Her initial burns healed, and repeated tests established that she could stand fully in the sun. Chinatsu scolded her for taking a potentially fatal risk 47.

Her immunity allowed her to train outdoors. It also alarmed the Corps: if Nezuko could overcome sunlight, other demons might do so as well. Following discussion, Oyakata-sama agreed to increase recruitment and vigilance. Nezuko then accompanied Chinatsu, Tanjiro, and Kyojuro to the Rengoku family home to investigate records concerning Sun Breathing 48 49.

Personality

Nezuko is affectionate and strongly attached to her surviving siblings. Their absence unsettles her, and she eagerly embraces Chinatsu at reunions. Her concern for family also drives her to act: she protects Tanjiro in battle and attempts to reach her siblings despite the danger of daylight 16 35 47.

She is enthusiastic about learning but initially doubts her ability to master a Breathing Style. Slow progress and sunlight restrictions make her fear that she will burden Chinatsu and Tanjiro. Their encouragement helps her persist, and she readily resumes lessons whenever given the opportunity 18 31 47.

Her eagerness can become recklessness. During her sunlight experiment, she progresses from testing one hand to stepping completely outside, then proudly recounts her discovery without recognizing how much danger she risked 47.

Abilities & Skills

Demonic Physiology

  • Enhanced strength: During her initial loss of control, she pins down Tanjiro despite his experience with physical labor. Later, a flying kick sends Spider Sister airborne 17 35.
  • Enhanced senses: Her transformation improves all five senses. She hears conversations from another room and locates commotion at the Training Ground by sound 19 47.
  • Regeneration: The burns caused by her first sunlight exposure heal during her experiment 47.
  • Body-size adjustment: She shrinks herself to fit inside Urokodaki’s portable wooden box 19.

Water Breathing and Swordsmanship

Nezuko learns from both Urokodaki and Chinatsu, combining elementary sword techniques with her demonic strength 18 31 35.

  • First Form: Water Surface Slash: Her first demonstrated combat technique wounds Spider Brother using a wooden practice sword 35.
  • Early limitations: She begins with no swordsmanship foundation. By the group’s departure for Spider Mountain, she cannot yet produce the visible “special effects” associated with more developed Water Breathing 18 31.
  • Continued instruction: Chinatsu teaches her to avoid forcing techniques through brute strength and to emphasize Water Breathing’s adaptability 48.
  • Training restrictions: Frequent sleep interrupts practice; before discovering her sunlight immunity, she must also train indoors 18 21.

Bloodlust Resistance and Recovery

  • Abstention from humans: Tanjiro states that Nezuko has not eaten a single person 36.
  • Resistance to rare blood: She endures Sanemi’s blood dripping onto her face despite intense salivation. The narration credits both her unusual demonic nature and tremendous mental strength 38.
  • Sleep-based recovery: Urokodaki theorizes that she replenishes her strength through sleep rather than consuming humans. Her continuing sleepiness limits sustained activity 16 21.

Sunlight Immunity

  • Sunlight initially scorches her skin, but the pain fades and the damage heals. Testing her second arm produces pain lasting only two or three seconds 47.
  • After exposing her whole body, she can remain outdoors and practice Water Breathing in daylight 47 48.

Domestic Skills

  • Sewing: Serves as the Kamado family’s sewing expert 6 22.
  • Hairstyling and haircuts: Cuts family members’ hair and arranges Chinatsu’s hair into a side ponytail after their stay at an inn 22.
  • Childcare: Helps look after her younger siblings before the massacre 6.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Bamboo muzzle — Worn around other people under an agreement with Urokodaki; she is permitted to remove it at home or in private with her siblings 16 35.
  • Special wooden box — Made by Urokodaki to be lighter and sturdier than an ordinary box. Tanjiro carries it on his back to transport her safely during daylight 19.
  • Wooden training sword — Used for practice and against Spider Brother; slightly shorter than a regular sword 19 21 35.

Relationships

  • Chinatsu Kamado — Older sister, protector, and swordsmanship instructor. Chinatsu encourages her training and secures permission for her to remove the muzzle at home. Her reassurance later inspires Nezuko’s sunlight experiment 16 18 31 47.
  • Tanjiro Kamado — Older brother who seeks to restore her humanity. He carries her during their travels, defends her from Shinobu, and fights back-to-back with her on Spider Mountain 2 19 35 36.
  • Sakonji Urokodaki — Caretaker and first Water Breathing teacher. He looks after her during Final Selection and stakes his life on her harmlessness 11 18 38.
  • Giyu Tomioka — Guarantor before the Corps. Alongside Urokodaki, he pledges his life for her and arranges the visit to headquarters 37 38.
  • Zenitsu Agatsuma — Traveling companion who becomes immediately infatuated with her appearance. Nezuko protects him from Spider Brother’s attack 35.
  • Tamayo — Medical ally who studies Nezuko’s blood and cares for her while Chinatsu and Tanjiro pursue nearby demons 24 25.
  • Sanemi Shinazugawa — Initially hostile Pillar who tests her with his rare blood. He reluctantly accepts her after she resists it 38 39.
  • Muzan Kibutsuji — Attacker responsible for the Kamado family massacre, after which Nezuko becomes a demon 1 7.
