| Bright Red Nichirin Blade | 37 | Successfully transforms his normally red blade through grip strength after learning Chiba Yo’s method. The transformed blade can suppress demon regeneration, and its appearance remains distinguishable from his blade’s ordinary red coloration. |
Background / History
The Rengoku Family joined the Demon Slayer Corps at its founding and continued its legacy across generations. Kagaya Ubuyashiki identifies the family as a possible source of surviving records about Origin Breathing 45.
Kyojuro is already the Flame Hashira when he encounters Chiba Yo. Before reaching the boy’s devastated village, he had completed several missions in succession. Although Kagaya assures him that the delay was unavoidable, Kyojuro blames himself for arriving after the massacre 3.
Appearance
- Hair: Yellow with red tips 2.
- Haori: Decorated with a flame pattern along the hem 2.
- Sword: Worn at his waist, with a flame-shaped guard 2.
Personality
Kyojuro is warmhearted, enthusiastic, and outspoken, frequently delivering encouragement in a booming voice. He takes pride in his students without resenting their talent: when Chiba Yo reproduces Flame Breathing after one demonstration, Kyojuro openly admits that his earlier assessment was wrong and celebrates the prospect of another powerful protector joining the Corps 4 5.
His guiding principle is that strength exists to protect the weak, not to secure personal gain. He holds gifted people to particularly strict moral standards and feels deeply responsible for those he cannot save. His compassion extends beyond swordsmanship; he reassures Senjuro that he will support whatever path his younger brother believes is right 3 10 20.
Kyojuro can jump to conclusions or interrupt before someone finishes speaking, especially when demons are involved. Nevertheless, he is attentive to others’ emotions and willing to revise his judgment. After Nezuko passes the Hashira’s test, he accepts her provisionally and reassures Chiba Yo that disagreeing with his teacher is perfectly normal 33 38.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Breathing
Kyojuro uses Flame Breathing in combat and teaches its sword techniques to his successors 2 5.
- First Form: Unknowing Fire — An explosive forward charge followed by a horizontal slash. He uses it to behead the fleeing Green-Skinned Demon 2 5.
- Secret Art, Ninth Form: Purgatory — Included in the techniques he teaches Chiba Yo; its combat effects are not described in the supplied passages 5.
- Teaching repertoire — Chiba Yo learns five Flame Breathing forms and the Ninth Form under his instruction 5.
Bright Red Nichirin Blade
Kyojuro can use grip strength to turn his Nichirin Blade bright red 37.
- The transformation grants the regeneration-suppressing property demonstrated by Chiba Yo 28 37.
- His blade is ordinarily red, but its bright-red state has a visible difference 37.
- Ordinary red coloration alone does not establish regeneration suppression; the swordsmiths had previously disproved that assumption 27.
Instruction and Talent Assessment
Kyojuro trains successors through physical exercises, demonstrations, and guidance tailored to their abilities 4 5.
- Recognizes that Chiba Yo has independently developed a Breathing Style and already maintains Total Concentration Breathing: Constant 4.
- Revises Chiba Yo’s training schedule after witnessing his immediate mastery of Unknowing Fire 5.
- Guides him in developing techniques for his own style and prompts him to give that style a name 5 11.
- Provides a spare Nichirin Blade from headquarters for Final Selection 5.
- Teaches that exceptional talent creates a responsibility to help others 20.
Demon-Hunting Knowledge
- Explains demon regeneration, Blood Demon Arts, and the weaknesses of sunlight, wisteria, and Nichirin decapitation to Chiba Yo 3.
- Advises that a demon disguised among civilians can be lured somewhere isolated by concealing one’s identity as a Demon Slayer and offering it an opportunity to feed 40.
- Explains that Hashira ordinarily cover separate areas, making joint missions a risk to people left without protection elsewhere 40.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Nichirin Blade — Normally red, with a flame-shaped guard; used to kill the Green-Skinned Demon and later transformed into a Bright Red Nichirin Blade 2 37.
- Flame-patterned haori — Distinguished by the flame design along its hem 2.
- Kasugai crow — Carries mission orders and messages; Kyojuro uses it to request Kakushi assistance after the village massacre 3 10 40.
- Bamboo training swords — Used when demonstrating Flame Breathing to Chiba Yo 5.
Relationships
- Chiba Yo — Tsuguko and later fellow Hashira. Kyojuro recruits him after the village massacre, teaches him without withholding techniques, and buys him a white kimono to celebrate passing Final Selection. Chiba Yo insists that Kyojuro will always be his teacher, regardless of rank 3 5 10 21.
- Mitsuri Kanroji — Former Tsuguko who becomes the Love Hashira. Kyojuro describes her as kind and powerful; she stops accompanying him on missions after receiving her own Hashira responsibilities 21 40.
- Senjuro Rengoku — Younger brother. Kyojuro teaches him sword techniques but supports him when he doubts that swordsmanship is the right path 10.
- Shinjuro Rengoku — Father. Kyojuro remains respectful despite Shinjuro dismissing his demon-slaying work, though his reaction shows heartache 10.
- Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Corps leader. Kagaya approves his decision to train Chiba Yo and eases his guilt over failing to reach the village sooner. Kyojuro deeply respects him, even when disagreeing with his decision concerning Nezuko 3 35.
- Shinobu Kocho — Fellow Hashira. Kyojuro praises her poison development and combat ability; she later remarks on his success in training Tsuguko 4 22.
- Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado — Initially demands their execution for violating Corps rules. He agrees to hear Tanjiro at Chiba Yo’s request, then provisionally accepts both siblings after Nezuko demonstrates restraint 33 35 38.

Trivia
