Tengen comes from a shinobi family and worked as a ninja before becoming a Hashira. His jeweled ornaments were purchased with savings from that period, rather than through his privileges in the Demon Slayer Corps 69 100.

His past weighs on his hopes for the future. Hinatsuru proposes that, if they defeat an Upper Rank and survive, they should leave the front lines and live together as ordinary people. She connects that wish to making amends for the lives they took as ninjas; Tengen recalls her words while risking his life to behead Gyutaro and finds the prospect of an ordinary life appealing 103.

Personality

Tengen habitually describes people, weapons, and achievements as “flashy” or “flamboyant.” He immediately approves of Chiba Yo’s flame-shaped forehead markings, admires the Bright Red Nichirin Blade demonstration, and boasts about his own appearance and three beautiful wives while provoking Gyutaro 22 28 99.

He can be abrasive and forceful when invoking his authority. He initially supports executing Tanjiro for harboring a demon, then demands proof of Nezuko’s innocence. Later, he attempts to take Aoi on a mission despite her objections, arguing that a Hashira has the right to deploy ordinary Corps members 33 34 83.

His conduct in battle shows a more protective side. He acknowledges Tanjiro and Nezuko’s perseverance, shields them from Gyutaro, and evacuates them with Hinatsuru despite severe wounds. His opinion of the siblings improves markedly after Nezuko removes his poison 99 101 103.

Bright Red Nichirin Blades

Tengen can turn both blades bright red simply by tightening his grip, without the substantial strain reported by several other Hashira 37.
