Background / History

Tanjiro comes from a family that has made charcoal for generations. Its records contain no history of ancestors joining the Demon Slayer Corps. The family nevertheless preserved the Hinokami Kagura, which his father, Tanjuro, taught him alongside its breathing method 40 43.

While Tanjiro was away from home, a demon attacked his family. Everyone except his younger sister Nezuko was killed, and Nezuko became a demon. Giyu Tomioka encountered Tanjiro during a winter mission and directed him to Sakonji Urokodaki. Tanjiro subsequently became a swordsman to find a cure for Nezuko 25 33 34.

During Final Selection, Tanjiro killed the Hand Demon and prayed for it as its remains disappeared. His compassion initially angered Chiba Yo, but sharing his flatbread helped the two become friends. Tanjiro, Chiba Yo, and Zenitsu stayed together for the following six days, using smell and hearing to locate demons. Throughout their hunts, Tanjiro questioned demons about returning them to humanity 8.

Appearance

• Red hair and a forehead wound are noted when Chiba Yo first meets him 8.
• Forehead scar and a checkered haori are used by the Kasugai crows to identify him 32.
• Hanafuda-like ear ornaments distinguish him in Muzan's instructions to Enmu 47.

Personality

Tanjiro distinguishes compassion from forgiveness. He does not hesitate to kill demons that have eaten humans, but recognizes that they were once people and may not have chosen their transformation. His prayer for the Hand Demon follows his recognition of sadness in its scent 8.

He is generous and unusually honest. He shares food with strangers during Final Selection, and Chiba Yo considers him such a poor liar that he would rather remain silent than invent a story. He also welcomes Chiba Yo's copying of the Hinokami Kagura, seeing another practitioner as a way to preserve and spread his family's tradition 8 34 46.

His protectiveness toward Nezuko can make him impulsive. He tries to intervene when Sanemi wounds her and later admits wanting to headbutt him. Nevertheless, he understands why the Hashira initially distrust her. After acknowledging that his confrontation with Muzan endangered bystanders, he promises to act more carefully 36 39.

Tanjiro's smell provides both tracking information and insight into others' emotional states 8 39.

Hinokami Kagura

The Hinokami Kagura combines an inherited dance with the breathing method taught by Tanjuro. Chiba Yo identifies its breathing as practically identical to his own Sun Breathing, rather than Flame Breathing 40 42 43.

• Continuous sequence: All twelve forms can link into a repeating cycle 45.
• Physical limitation: Tanjiro's body and lungs are not yet strong enough to unleash the techniques' full power. Completing the entire dance leaves him panting heavily 43.
• Afterimage limitation: Chiba Yo's Transparent World allows him to distinguish Tanjiro's real body from Mirage Sun Rainbow's afterimages 43.
• Historical connection: Kagaya confirms that Origin Breathing was called Sun Breathing, but directs Tanjiro and Chiba Yo to the Rengoku family's records for further answers 45.

Total Concentration Breathing: Constant

Tanjiro has recently mastered this breathing practice by the time Chiba Yo teaches him about red blades 46.

Bright Red Nichirin Blade

Tanjiro learns that a Bright Red Nichirin Blade can suppress a demon's regeneration 46.

• Sakonji Urokodaki — Trainer. His letter supports Nezuko's continued acceptance and pledges that he, Tanjiro, and Giyu will commit seppuku if she attacks another person 9 35.
• Giyu Tomioka — Directs Tanjiro to Urokodaki and stakes his life on Nezuko's conduct. Tanjiro is moved to tears upon learning of this commitment 25 35.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Encounter with Muzan

Tanjiro recognizes Muzan in a marketplace by his scent. Muzan is posing as a human man, accompanied by a human woman who calls him her husband and a human girl. Tanjiro's anger over his family's murder prompts an immediate confrontation, but Muzan transforms a nearby person into a demon and escapes while Tanjiro protects the crowd 39.

Tanjiro later supplies Chiba Yo with details of Muzan's appearance and escape tactic. His encounter is also significant to Kagaya, who explains that Muzan is sending pursuers after him. Muzan subsequently offers Enmu additional blood for killing the swordsman wearing hanafuda-like ear ornaments 37 39 47.

Mount Natagumo and the Hashira Trial

Tanjiro uses Hinokami Kagura against Lower Rank Five, but suffers severe injuries and breaks his sword. After Giyu kills Lower Rank Five, headquarters orders Tanjiro and Nezuko brought before the Hashira 32 33 40 42.

Several Hashira demand their execution for harboring a demon. Chiba Yo intervenes, citing Tanjiro's willingness to kill man-eating demons and the people he saved during Final Selection. Tanjiro then explains that Nezuko has never eaten a human in the more than two years since her transformation 33 34.

Urokodaki's letter and Nezuko's refusal to bite the wounded Sanemi establish grounds for accepting the siblings. Kagaya tells Tanjiro to prove their usefulness by defeating one of the Twelve Kizuki, tempering his immediate vow to defeat Muzan 35 36.

Rehabilitation and Hinokami Kagura Investigation

At the Butterfly Mansion, Tanjiro recovers and trains his reflexes against Kanao. His questions about Hinokami Kagura lead Chiba Yo to examine the breathing method and all twelve forms 40 41 42 43.

The investigation gives Tanjiro a lead toward the Rengoku family's historical records, a clearer understanding of the dance's repeating structure, and practical instruction in producing a Bright Red Nichirin Blade 45 46.
