Rank and Appointment
- Qualification: A swordsman must kill fifty demons or one member of the Twelve Kizuki to become a Hashira 21 23.
- Appointment: Kagaya authorizes promotions. Chiba Yo receives notice through a Kakushi member after defeating Lower Rank Two 20.
- Individual titles: Hashira generally take their titles from their Breathing Styles. Chiba Yo chooses Sun Hashira, connecting the title to both his style and his name 23.
- Rank distinction: Becoming a Hashira places Chiba Yo on the same rank as his teacher, Kyojuro. Nevertheless, he insists that Kyojuro will always remain his teacher 21.
- Weapon distinction: “Destroyer of Demons” is the inscription reserved for Hashira-ranked swordsmen’s Nichirin Blades 26.

Former and Historical Holders
- Grandpa Kuwajima — Former Rumble Hashira who recognizes Zenitsu Agatsuma’s talent, pays off his debts, and trains him 7.
- Sakonji Urokodaki — Former Hashira who writes in support of Nezuko and pledges seppuku if she attacks a human 35.
- Unnamed earlier Flame Hashira — Recruited a swordsman born with the Transparent World and a Demon Slayer Mark a hundred years before Kyojuro recruited Chiba Yo 3.
Duties and Authority
Combat and Patrols
- Hashira undertake especially dangerous missions; demanding promotion requirements and frequent deaths historically keep their numbers at nine or fewer 23.
- Each Hashira has an assigned area to protect. Kyojuro explains that routinely accompanying another Hashira would leave people elsewhere exposed to danger 40.
- Kagaya can dispatch several Hashira together when necessary, as he does with Giyu, Shinobu, and Chiba Yo after reports of a Twelve Kizuki at Mount Natagumo 28.
- Kyojuro teaches that exceptional strength carries a duty to protect the weak, not to harm others for personal gain 20.
Training and Discipline
- Hashira can train Tsuguko, their designated successors. Kyojuro’s students Mitsuri and Chiba Yo both attain Hashira rank 3 21.
- Hashira discuss the quality of lower-ranking swordsmen and the Corps’ overall combat strength during meetings 21 24.
- Kyojuro asserts that the Hashira have authority to execute Tanjiro for harboring a demon. Mitsuri questions whether they should act without the Master’s permission 33 34.
- Kagaya reprimands Sanemi and Obanai for treating lower-ranking swordsmen too harshly, demonstrating that Hashira remain accountable to him 37.
Hashira Meetings
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Normal frequency | Once every six months 21. |
| Attendance | Every Hashira is required to attend 21. |
| Location | Corps headquarters, at Kagaya’s residence 21 24. |
| Agenda | Demon activity, Muzan’s possible whereabouts and movements, Corps discipline, and the balance of combat strength 21. |
| Duration | Generally several days; the meeting following Chiba Yo’s promotion lasts a week 24 26. |
| Other opportunities | Time to rest, train independently, or teach Tsuguko 24. |
| Extraordinary gatherings | Kagaya advances or calls meetings for urgent matters, including Chiba Yo’s mark and Tanjiro’s association with Nezuko 23 35. |
Shared Combat Developments
Demon Slayer Marks
- Kagaya advances the meeting following Chiba Yo’s promotion chiefly to investigate his Demon Slayer Mark and learn how others might awaken one 23.
- Chiba Yo cannot explain an awakening process because his mark has been present since birth 24.
- Historical records describe marked swordsmen dying before age twenty-five. Sanemi and the other Hashira accept the reported risk; Gyomei questions what awakening a mark would mean for him 28.
- Sanemi volunteers to awaken a mark himself and share the method, but no successful awakening by another Hashira is documented in the supplied passages 28.
Bright Red Nichirin Weapons
- Chiba Yo demonstrates that sufficient grip strength turns a Nichirin Blade bright red and allows it to suppress demon regeneration. Kagaya corroborates the effect through a Kasugai crow’s report 28.
- Obanai, Kyojuro, Muichiro, Giyu, Sanemi, and Mitsuri find the grip method taxing. Muichiro suggests reserving it for powerful opponents 37.
- Tengen and Gyomei report little difficulty with the grip method, though Gyomei must use a borrowed blade to test it 37.
- Gyomei discovers that striking his axe and flail together produces the same transformation; the other Hashira subsequently confirm that blade collisions also work 37 38.
- An ordinary Flame Breathing user’s red blade is not automatically a Bright Red Nichirin Blade: the latter’s regeneration-suppressing effect is a separate property 27 37.
Major Events
Appointment of the Tenth Hashira
Kagaya announces Chiba Yo’s appointment as an unprecedented expansion beyond nine simultaneous Hashira. His promotion follows the defeat of Rokuro, while his birth mark prompts discussion of the marked swordsmen who nearly killed Muzan in the Sengoku era 23 24.
Tanjiro and Nezuko’s Hearing
The Hashira gather to consider Tanjiro’s violation of Corps rules by traveling with a demon. Five initially oppose accepting the siblings; Mitsuri and Chiba Yo explicitly support them, while three others remain silent or uncommitted 33 35.
At Chiba Yo’s suggestion, Sanemi tests Nezuko by injuring her and exposing her to his blood. She resists, and the Hashira accept the result, although Sanemi remains reluctant. Kagaya requires Tanjiro to prove the siblings’ usefulness by defeating one of the Twelve Kizuki 35 36 38.
Investigation of Muzan
Tanjiro’s encounter with Muzan shocks the Hashira: Tengen states that none of them has encountered him. Kagaya treats Tanjiro as a valuable lead and explains that Muzan is sending pursuers after him 36 37.
Mugen Train Assignment
Kyojuro is sent to investigate a demon near the Mugen train after dispatched Corps members are killed and civilians begin falling victim. Chiba Yo remains responsible for his own patrol area rather than accompanying him 40.
