| First Appearance | Chapter 2, disguised as Gittarackur 2 |
Appearance
- Hair: Long, silky black hair reaching his waist in his true form 88 89.
- Eyes: Large, pitch-black eyes, described as feline, vacant, and abyss-like; Cordis compares his irises to black pearls 26 89.
- Complexion and expression: Pale skin and a usually expressionless face 26 89.
- Gittarackur disguise: Pins embedded in his face distort his features, accompanied by repeated facial and neck twitching. Removing them restores his face and long black hair 2 25 26.
Personality
Illumi’s flat voice and nearly unchanging expression conceal strong attachments and occasional anger. His concern for Killua is repeatedly emphasized, but he expresses it through surveillance, commands, and mental control rather than reassurance. When Cordis removes Killua’s Nen Needle, Illumi struggles to restrain his anger; when Killua refuses to return home, he finds himself unable to manipulate him, outargue him, or bring himself to hit him 26 27 89.
He is suspicious of unfamiliar attention. Cordis’s persistent admiration initially makes him wonder whether Cordis is an enemy, despite Cordis only asking for fashion advice and offering food. He also sets blunt boundaries, refusing to share his soup, provide his contact details, or tolerate being followed 3 11 15 90 106.
With Hisoka, Illumi is more openly teasing and inquisitive. He questions Hisoka’s attachment to Cordis and repeatedly concludes that Hisoka is in love. His own expectations are pragmatic: he anticipates marrying and having three or four children, leaves marriage arrangements to his mother, and says he is more concerned about Killua’s whereabouts 17 221 223.
Abilities & Skills
Nen Needle Manipulation
Illumi implants a nearly invisible Nen Needle deep in Killua’s scalp to reinforce his teachings and maintain control over him 26.
- Causes Illumi’s teachings to replay in Killua’s mind and sustains his fear of his brother 26.
- Was intended to make bringing Killua home straightforward 26.
- Loses its influence when Cordis extracts it: Killua’s intrusive thoughts disappear, his mind clears, and his usual fear vanishes 26.
- After its removal, Illumi must rely on persuasion and his authority as eldest brother; both fail 26 27.
Pin-Based Disguise
Illumi uses facial pins to maintain his Gittarackur identity throughout the Hunter Exam 2 26.
- Alters his facial features and hair appearance 26.
- Conceals his identity from Killua until their final-phase match 25 26.
- Was intended to avoid attention, but instead attracts Cordis’s enthusiastic admiration 3.
Ren
Illumi releases his full aura when Cordis begins searching for Killua’s Nen Needle, attempting to intimidate him into stopping 26.
- Exerts immense pressure on the examiners and candidates; some weaker people lose consciousness 26.
- Drives Killua to his knees as his implanted conditioning resurfaces 26.
- Does not stop Cordis, who endures the pressure long enough to remove the needle 26.
Assassination and Needle Combat
Illumi employs needles both as projectiles and as close-range threats 17 89.
- Kills a spear-wielding examinee with a needle through the neck 17.
- Throws a dozen large-headed pins at Cordis, who evades them with a backflip 89.
- Moves behind Cordis and holds a needle against his neck while questioning him 89.
- Assassinates the Ten Dons under Chrollo’s commission 90.
Perception and Combat Standing
- Can sense Cordis from more than one hundred meters away; the passage does not identify the technique responsible 17.
- Is acknowledged by Killua as many times stronger than him, even after Killua loses his conditioned fear 26.
- Is placed above Cordis in an explicit author’s combat-ranking note. That note does not establish an order among Illumi, Hisoka, Chrollo, and Feitan 172.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Facial pins: Maintain his Gittarackur disguise 2 26.
- Combat needles and large-headed pins: Used for lethal throws and close-range intimidation 17 89.
- Nen Needle: Implanted in Killua’s scalp, then extracted by Cordis and returned to Illumi 26.
- Walkie-talkie: Used to contact Hisoka during the fog-covered exam phase 7.
- Mobile phone: Used during his final appearance, when he offers to transfer money for sweets intended for Killua 223.
Relationships
- Killua — Younger brother and former subject of his Nen Needle conditioning. Illumi wants him home, but surrenders their exam match after Killua rejects his orders. His later questions remain primarily focused on Killua, and he asks Hisoka to buy sweets Killua likes 26 27 222 223.
- Hisoka — Longtime acquaintance and friend. They communicate during the exam, share Illumi’s mushroom soup, and discuss Cordis. Illumi’s news about Cordis’s injuries prompts Hisoka to leave immediately for the hospital 7 15 17 221.
- Cordis — Persistent admirer who disrupts Illumi’s control over Killua. Their later encounter includes an attack, teasing, and Cordis healing Illumi’s wounds; Illumi then pats Cordis’s head and praises him. Despite Cordis’s continued interest, he refuses to exchange contact details 3 26 89 90.
- Chrollo — Client who hires him to assassinate the Ten Dons, while separately employing Cordis for the follow-up work 90.
- Silva — Father. Illumi identifies himself and Silva as Killua’s trainers and insists Killua at least inform Silva of his refusal to return home 26 27.
- Mother — Handles Illumi’s marriage arrangements and repeatedly tells him how much she misses Killua 221.
- Alluka — Becomes a subject of Illumi’s interest during the months after Cordis’s hospitalization 222.
History
Hunter Exam
Illumi enters the Hunter Exam disguised as Gittarackur and first meets Cordis in the elevator leading to the venue. His attempt to remain inconspicuous backfires: Cordis admires his pin-covered appearance and repeatedly seeks styling advice and contact information. Illumi’s interactions with him range from guarded curiosity to outright rejection 2 3 11 13 15.
During the island phase, Illumi cooks mushroom soup and reserves the remaining half for Hisoka. He later kills a spear-wielding candidate attacking Hisoka, remarking that the man was too pitiful. Their subsequent conversation about Hisoka’s intention to eventually kill Cordis is overheard by Gon 15 17.
In the final phase, Illumi faces Killua and removes his disguise. His purpose is to bring Killua home, using the implanted Nen Needle to secure his obedience. Cordis intervenes and extracts the needle despite Illumi’s Ren. With his conditioning gone, Killua refuses to return home; Illumi ultimately surrenders the match 25 26 27.
Yorknew City
Illumi encounters Cordis while carrying out the Ten Dons assassination. He attacks with pins, questions him about Killua, and teases him about his relationship with Hisoka. When Illumi reaches toward Cordis’s eyes, Cordis wounds his arm and escapes, then heals the superficial injuries to avoid antagonizing the Zoldyck Family 89.
Cordis subsequently discovers the Ten Dons already dead. Chrollo confirms that he hired Illumi as well: killing alone costs five million, while requesting use of his ability doubles the price. Chrollo employs Cordis to make the dead men speak over video rather than paying Illumi for that additional service 90.
Illumi later visits a restaurant Hisoka recommended and encounters Cordis outside its locked doors. Cordis follows him, but Illumi asks him to stop and returns to his apartment alone 105 106.
After the Chimera Ant Extermination
Illumi confronts Hisoka about his feelings for Cordis, then reveals that Cordis was badly injured while participating in the extermination mission. Hisoka departs before Illumi can finish discussing Killua, reinforcing Illumi’s belief that Hisoka is in love 220 221.
Over the following months, Illumi occasionally asks about Cordis, more frequently asks about Killua, and develops an interest in Alluka. In his final appearance, he is with Hisoka when they spot Cordis arriving by cruise ship. When Hisoka leaves to buy liquor, Illumi requests sweets for Killua and offers to reimburse him 222 223.
