Cordis Paipai escaped from Aiboka Psychiatric Hospital and learned that he would be banished from Blue Star because of his overwhelming strength. He chose the Hunter x Hunter world and arrived in a blood-soaked alley, where an unseen speaker noticed he was still alive.
Cordis survived an encounter with Hisoka, who challenged him to fight again after he learned Nen, then prepared himself and registered for the Hunter Exam. The chapter left Cordis entering the exam venue in an elevator with Illumi disguised as Gittarackur, whom Cordis found handsome.
Cordis arrived at the Hunter Exam venue with Illumi, admired Illumi’s outfit, and tried to get styling advice before Hisoka interrupted them. Later, Cordis stopped Tonpa from giving Gon another drink and offered Gon candy, leaving Kurapika wary of the stranger.
Cordis Paipai met Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio before the first phase of the Hunter Exam began, then ran with them through the tunnel. The runners reached a distant light that appeared to mark the finish, while Cordis carried Leorio's abandoned briefcase.
Cordis, Gon, and Killua entered the Swindlers' Nest, where a creature tried to impersonate Satotz. Cordis exposed the deception, and as the group moved through the fog, Gon and Killua went ahead while Cordis stayed back to protect Leorio and Kurapika.
Cordis rescued Leorio and Kurapika from giant turtles, then intercepted Hisoka’s attack on the last blue-clad man. Cordis faced Hisoka, and Leorio chose to fight beside him as Gon continued toward the finish line with Killua.
Cordis fought Hisoka in the fog-shrouded forest, then escaped and reunited with Gon. Gon told him Kurapika had taken Leorio back to the group and led Cordis toward them.
Cordis reunited with Gon and the others after his encounter with Hisoka, and the group reached the second phase of the Hunter Exam. Menchi and Buhara assigned the examinees a cooking test, but Gon’s group found a herd of Rhinonose Pigs and had to flee as the pigs charged through the forest.
Cordis and the other examinees failed Menchi’s roast-pig test, prompting Chairman Netero to intervene and arrange a new test. The group reached Mount Mabitas, where Menchi jumped from a cliff toward giant eggs suspended in spider silk.
After passing Menchi’s Spider Egg test, Cordis, Gon, Killua, and the other applicants boarded the Airship for the next exam. Cordis cooked meat in the cafeteria and spotted Illumi disguised as Gittarackur, leaving him poised to approach him.
Cordis encountered Illumi in the cafeteria, then joined the third phase of the Hunter Exam at Trick Tower. After falling into a dark room, he reunited with Hisoka and they began navigating the tower’s question-controlled doors.
Cordis and Hisoka answered the final question before entering an arena, where Cordis fought a man who boasted about the Spider and his kills. The man surrendered after Cordis knocked him out of the arena, and Cordis moved on with the belief that people had to face the future.
Cordis and Hisoka cleared the Dueling Arena in thirty minutes, then waited through the rest of the exam while Cordis fixated on Illumi and agreed to join Hisoka’s post-exam tour. Gon and Killua finally arrived, and Cordis welcomed them as the exam drew to a close.
The candidates drew targets for the fourth phase of the Hunter Exam, which would take place on Sabir Island. Cordis tried to reassure Gon about facing Hisoka, then disembarked with Hisoka as the weeklong hunt began.
Cordis collected his target’s badge on the fourth phase island, then wandered south hoping to find Gon. He encountered Illumi and Hisoka over a pot of mushroom soup, left hungry, and continued searching for Gon the next morning.
Cordis encouraged Gon to look for the right opening to steal Hisoka’s badge, then encountered Hisoka on Sabir Island and remembered their promise to visit the Phantom Troupe. Three days later, Cordis returned to the river and reunited with Gon, who ran into his arms.
Cordis treated Gon’s injured hand and encouraged him to face Hisoka alone. As Gon hid nearby, he watched Hisoka kill a challenger and learned that Hisoka planned to kill Cordis after letting him grow stronger.
Hisoka confronted Kurapika, Leorio, and Cordis for their badges, but Cordis and Kurapika argued over who should surrender theirs. Hisoka returned most of the badges after Cordis promised to fight him once he awakened Nen, then stayed behind as Gon watched from hiding, overwhelmed by Hisoka’s terrifying aura.
Gon stole Hisoka’s badge, but a dark-skinned man took it along with Gon's before Cordis killed him. Hisoka let Gon keep the man’s badge, then struck Cordis when Gon refused the offer, causing Cordis’s Nen to awaken.
Cordis awakened his Nen while fighting Hisoka, but Hisoka broke his arm and Cordis collapsed. Gon later found Cordis alive and cared for him, leaving Cordis to recognize how much Gon had grown.
Cordis, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio regrouped near the finish line after Cordis recovered from his fight with Hisoka, and Cordis led them to a cave where Leorio hoped to find Ponzu. Leorio entered the cave alone as the exam neared its end.
Leorio entered the Cave alone but was badly bitten by snakes and trapped with Gon, Kurapika, Cordis, and Ponzu in Babon’s cavern. With Leorio weakening from venom, Cordis approached the dead Babon to retrieve antivenom, revealing a powerful ability as the chapter ended.
Cordis helped Gon and the others survive the cave, and Gon resolved to become stronger and surpass Hisoka. At dawn, the fourth phase of the Hunter Exam ended, and candidates headed for the finish line.
The nine candidates passed the fourth phase and boarded the airship, where Netero interviewed them about their motivations and opinions of one another. Cordis asked to fight Hisoka and admitted he liked Gittarackur, while Gon said he intended to kill Hisoka and described Cordis as a gentle big brother; the chapter ended before Illumi and Killua’s confrontation.
The final phase of the Hunter Exam began with single-elimination matches, and Gon defeated Hanzo after a grueling fight when Hanzo surrendered. Killua then faced Gittarackur, leaving their match—and the promised confrontation between Killua and Illumi—about to begin.
