Background / History
Kurta Clan Massacre
Kurapika survives the massacre of the Kurta Clan, which occurred five years before his interrogation of Pakunoda. After hearing the news and returning, he finds his clansmen’s mutilated bodies with their eyes gouged out. The sight becomes a recurring nightmare 151 154.
His goals are to recover his people’s Scarlet Eyes, uncover the truth behind the massacre, and take revenge on those responsible. He views gaining influence within the Mafia as a means of pursuing those goals 150 162.
Hunter Exam
Kurapika participates in the Hunter Exam alongside Gon, Leorio, Killua, and A Luo. Menchi rejects his cooking submission after he imitates Gon’s attempt using a smaller fish surrounded by rice 97 101.
During the badge-hunting phase, he teams up with Leorio to defeat Tonpa and Suomi. When they encounter Hisoka, Kurapika deduces that Hisoka does not need his Number 404 badge; leaving Suomi’s badge behind allows them to depart safely 110 111.
He later joins the search for Ponzu and enters Bapeng’s cave after hearing Leorio’s warning cry. Gon uses Sleeping Gas and carries Kurapika, Leorio, and Ponzu out of the snake-filled cave. Kurapika passes the exam after Killua kills Bodoro and disqualifies himself 113 116 117.
Rescuing Killua
Kurapika accompanies Gon, Leorio, and A Luo to Kukuroo Mountain to retrieve Killua. While A Luo enters the estate ahead of them, the three boys remain with Zebro to train for the Testing Gate 116 118.
After the group reunites and leaves the mountain, Kurapika departs to pursue his own goals. Leorio resumes his preparations for medical school, while Gon, Killua, and A Luo travel to Heavens Arena 127.
Joining the Nostrade Family
Through the Shining Star Society, Kurapika learns that Neon Nostrade is recruiting bodyguards. He passes the recruitment tests and joins the guard detail protecting the Mafia heiress, whose collection includes human body parts 148.
In Yorknew City, A Luo tells him about her captivity among the Phantom Troupe and reveals that Hisoka is only pretending to be a member. Kurapika reassures her that he does not blame her for her forced association with the Spiders, and they agree to cooperate against them 149.
Underground Auction and Hideout Battle
Kurapika warns his guard captain not to send anyone to the underground auction. When Nostrade nevertheless orders guards to attend, Kurapika abandons the immediate revenge operation to save his coworkers. He and A Luo lead them out shortly before the Troupe’s massacre begins 150 151.
After Uvogin defeats several Shadow Beasts, Kurapika captures him while he is immobilized by poison. Kurapika, A Luo, and Owl then attack the Troupe’s hideout, but their expected insider support fails when the supposed Hisoka proves to be Illumi 151 152.
During the battle, Kurapika restrains Phinks, imposes a lethal prohibition on his use of Nen, and nearly catches Chrollo. A returning Spider wearing a skull mask deflects his chain. With reinforcements arriving, A Luo threatens the Troupe with a bomb, securing an escape for their group 152.
Interrogations and Uvogin’s Death
At the hotel, Kurapika binds Pakunoda and questions her about the Kurta massacre. Her refusal to answer drives him to violence. He eventually forbids her from using Nen or revealing information about his group, then entrusts her to Owl 154 155.
When the Spiders attack, Kurapika defeats and recaptures Uvogin using Emperor Time and Chain Jail. A Luo’s hired Zoldyck assistance enables their escape by airship 156 157.
Uvogin refuses to answer Kurapika’s questions, and Kurapika beats him to death. Rather than finding satisfaction, he is left disoriented, covered in blood, and dry-heaving. A Luo persuades him to burn the body instead of burying it, limiting what the pursuing Spiders can learn 157.
Captaincy and Hostage Exchange
After Dalzollene is murdered, the surviving guards nominate Kurapika as their new captain. He accepts the position and continues protecting Neon despite the nearby Troupe attack and his fears for A Luo 161 162.
Kurapika later captures Chrollo with Chain Jail. Because Gon and Killua remain in the Troupe’s custody, he keeps Chrollo alive and negotiates an exchange. He seals Chrollo’s Nen with Judgment Pinkie Chain, preventing Hisoka from obtaining the duel he had expected 166 167 168.
Following the exchange, Kurapika collapses from prolonged fighting and excessive use of Emperor Time. He remains unconscious with a high fever for several days before recovering. He then leaves Yorknew City with Neon, continuing his duties as guard captain 169 172.
The restriction he placed on Chrollo is later removed by a Nen Exorcist, whose Nen beast swallows the weapon extracted from Chrollo’s heart 181.
Appearance
Kurapika is a blond young man whose eyes turn scarlet during intense emotion and combat 151 152 154.
- Scarlet Eyes: Their fiery color identifies his connection to the Kurta Clan and draws Pakunoda’s attention during her interrogation 154.
- Youthful appearance: Despite the burden of his revenge campaign, he is only seventeen during the Yorknew conflict 169.
Personality
Kurapika is ordinarily gentle, compassionate, and protective. He comforts A Luo after learning about her captivity rather than judging her, and refuses to sacrifice recently met coworkers for a better opportunity at revenge. When Gon and Killua become hostages, their safety takes priority over killing Chrollo 149 151 168.
He prefers to understand a situation before acting. Before attacking the Troupe, he asks about A Luo’s abilities so they can coordinate, questions whether Hisoka can be trusted, and warns the Nostrade guards about the auction 149 150.
His hatred can overwhelm that restraint. The auction massacre triggers memories of his clansmen’s bodies, while interrogating Pakunoda and Uvogin brings out brutality absent from his usual behavior. Uvogin’s death leaves him physically sick rather than triumphant 151 154 157.
Kurapika also takes excessive responsibility for danger to his friends. After Chrollo’s capture, he blames himself for involving A Luo, even though Chrollo explains that the Troupe had pursued her long before their alliance 166.
Abilities & Skills
Emperor Time
Emperor Time maximizes Kurapika’s proficiency in every Nen category while active 152.
- Enables close-quarters combat against Chrollo and helps him pressure Uvogin 152 156.
- Is used in conjunction with his active Scarlet Eyes 156.
- Excessive use, combined with prolonged fighting, contributes to his collapse and persistent fever after the hostage exchange 169.
Chain Jail
Chain Jail binds a target and forcibly seals their Nen, putting them into Zetsu 152.
- Restrains Uvogin, Pakunoda, Phinks, and eventually Chrollo 152 154 156 166.
- Prevents Uvogin from breaking free despite his enormous physical strength 152.
- Can be damaged by an outside Nen attack: Bonolenov’s strike creates a crack while Phinks struggles against it 152.
- Can be intercepted before reaching its target, as demonstrated during Kurapika’s failed attempt to bind Chrollo at the hideout 152.
Judgment Pinkie Chain
Judgment Pinkie Chain places enforceable conditions on a target, with death as the penalty for breaking them 155.
- Phinks: Forbidden from using Nen; doing so would kill him immediately 152.
- Pakunoda: Forbidden from using Nen or revealing information about Kurapika’s group. Further restrictions prevent contact with Chrollo during the exchange 155 168.
- Chrollo: A weapon embedded in his heart prevents him from using his Nen ability until an Exorcist removes it 168 181.
- The restriction does not simply make Nen inaccessible: Chrollo recognizes that affected members are forbidden to use it under threat of death 163.
Zetsu
Kurapika uses Zetsu to conceal himself while approaching the Troupe’s hideout with A Luo 152.
Combat and Tactical Judgment
Kurapika combines hand-to-hand fighting, chain restraints, and advance planning 149 152.
- Negotiates his way past Hisoka during the Hunter Exam by identifying which badge Hisoka actually needs 111.
- Exploits Uvogin’s poisoned state to capture him during the Shadow Beasts’ battle 151.
- Leaves his fight with Chrollo to rescue Owl from Kortopi 152.
- His newly learned abilities are assessed as better suited to fighting individual Spiders; encirclement and drawn-out group combat remain major risks 149.
Relationships
- A Luo — Friend and principal ally against the Troupe. They share intelligence, coordinate their abilities, and repeatedly protect one another during the Yorknew battles 149 152 166.
- Gon — Friend whose safety outweighs Kurapika’s revenge. After recovering, Kurapika declines to become his teacher but advises him to consult Wing 168 172.
- Killua — Friend whom Kurapika helps retrieve from the Zoldyck estate and later rescues through the exchange for Chrollo 116 127 168.
- Leorio — Hunter Exam teammate and trusted friend. Leorio restrains Kurapika from responding to Chrollo’s provocations while Gon and Killua are still captive 110 111 167.
- Melody — Fellow Nostrade guard who keeps him informed about Neon and the guard detail. Her ability to read heartbeats helps assess Chrollo during his captivity 150 161 167.
- Neon Nostrade — His charge as a bodyguard and guard captain. Protecting her supports his efforts to gain Nostrade’s trust and recover his clan’s eyes 148 162.
- Hisoka — Dangerous, distrusted ally and insider in the Spider Extermination Alliance. Their interests overlap only temporarily; Kurapika’s sealing of Chrollo’s Nen frustrates Hisoka’s intended duel 149 168 200.
- Chrollo Lucilfer — Enemy and leader of the Phantom Troupe. Kurapika captures him and uses him as leverage to recover Gon and Killua 166 167 168.
- Owl — Temporary combat ally who helps transport and conceal captured Spiders. Kurapika saves him from Kortopi during the hideout battle 152 155.
