Appearance
Feitan is a short, gray-haired man with dark golden eyes, a skull-patterned face covering, and a low, raspy voice 11 19.
- Short stature: A Luo is described as the only person in the Troupe shorter than him during their stay in Meteor City 19.
- Skull-patterned mask: Covers the lower part of his face, including during interrogations and fights 11 41.
- Cloak: Conceals the umbrella that houses his sword 31 49.
Personality
Feitan is sadistic and treats torture as entertainment as well as a means of gathering information. When Robin’s Indoor Fish leaves a mutilated victim alive, Feitan expresses fascination: keeping victims alive is normally a limitation on how long he can “play” with them 26.
He is particularly sensitive about his height. A Luo’s joke earns her two nights of deliberate sleep deprivation, while strangers calling him a “runt” provoke lethal violence. Hisoka’s similar insults intensify their hostility 22 31 41.
His pride also makes him quick to interpret innocent behavior as mockery. During his paralysis, he mistakes A Luo’s excessive feeding for an attempt to humiliate him through repeated bathroom trips. Later, while trapped in a Nen Force Field, he assumes her question about his condition is another attempt to embarrass him 33 47.
Despite threatening A Luo repeatedly, Feitan kills an attacker before the man can take her hostage and carries her when she cannot keep pace with the Spiders. After recovering from poisoning, he becomes conflicted when Pakunoda describes A Luo as someone destined to die 20 21 34.
Abilities & Skills
Speed and Close-Quarters Combat
Feitan is described as the Phantom Troupe’s fastest member and is known among the Spiders for finishing fights quickly 11 46.
- Removes A Luo’s left little fingernail before she finishes offering to confess 11.
- Kills two alley opponents by tearing or twisting off their heads with his bare hands 31.
- Knocks Robin unconscious with a hand strike as he attempts to escape 26.
- Immediately attacks Blondie with his sword once the Nen Force Field releases him 48.
- Fights Hisoka without an immediate winner; Shizuku later judges that Feitan would have lost if their fight had continued 48 49.
Nen
Feitan uses Nen for defense and intimidation, but neither his affinity nor the name of his finishing technique is established in the provided chapters.
- Ten: Attempts to block an incoming dagger with aura defense. The weapon bypasses Nen defenses and poisons him through a wound in his lower abdomen 31.
- Intimidation: Threatens A Luo with Nen during the airship ticket dispute 29.
- Unnamed finishing move: Nearly uses it when Phinks, Nobunaga, and Uvogin gang up on him. Chrollo intervenes before the move can destroy the Troupe’s base 12.
- Combat limitations: His speed does not prevent him from being immobilized by poison or a restrictive Nen Force Field 31 47.
Interrogation and Torture
Chrollo specifically summons Feitan to interrogate A Luo after identifying her fear of him 9 10.
- Removes A Luo’s fingernail at the beginning of her interrogation, prompting her to appeal directly to Chrollo 11.
- Tortures Blondie until he reveals everything he knows, then reports that Chrollo can take his Nen ability 49.
- Understands the need to control injuries if he wants a victim to remain alive 26.
Investigation and Tactical Judgment
Although Feitan generally prefers speed and force to extended analysis, he can identify practical weaknesses in enemy abilities 47.
- Searches a town for Nen users and locates Robin after Chrollo points out that he has not checked the inn’s guests 25.
- Breaks a window on Chrollo’s instruction, disabling Indoor Fish by opening the sealed room 26.
- Recognizes that Blondie is straining to restrain him and directs Shizuku to attack from a safe distance. The resulting projectile forces Blondie to move and release the field 47.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Umbrella-concealed sword: A flexible sword stored inside the umbrella’s frame; used against Blondie and Hisoka 31 47 48 49.
- Scarlet Eyes: Sells all the Scarlet Eyes in his possession before returning to Meteor City for A Luo’s interrogation 10.
Relationships
- Chrollo — His leader, who assigns interrogations and investigations. Chrollo restrains his destructive impulses and forbids him from killing A Luo while she remains part of his collection 10 12 25 34.
- A Luo / Lola — Initially his frightened interrogation subject, later the Troupe’s cook and his reluctant caregiver. Their relationship develops into bickering, food-based bargaining, threats, and occasional protective actions 11 19 20 22 32 34.
- Hisoka — A hostile fellow member who repeatedly seeks a fight with him. Hisoka deliberately rescues Blondie from Feitan’s sword to provoke him into combat 42 48 49.
- Machi — A fellow Spider who warns him about impending bad luck and criticizes his impulsiveness. She also knows about the antidote while he remains paralyzed 29 32 33.
- Pakunoda — Stops him from retaliating against A Luo after his recovery and later prevents another fight with Hisoka by invoking the Troupe’s rules 34 49.
- Phinks — Warns him not to cripple A Luo’s hands because the Troupe depends on her cooking. Feitan rejects the warning as an order, and the two fight outside 11.
- Shizuku — His partner during the Treasure Festival robbery. She helps free him from Blondie’s field and later openly questions his chances against Hisoka 46 47 49.
Story Role / Major Arcs
A Luo’s Interrogation
Feitan first appears at the Meteor City base, so absorbed in torture that he has not bothered sleeping. Later, A Luo’s relief at his absence allows Chrollo to identify whom she fears. Shalnark contacts him, and Feitan returns after completing the sale of the Scarlet Eyes 6 9 10 11.
His removal of A Luo’s left little fingernail triggers her confession that she died as Kasuga, a Zoldyck butler, and was reborn in Lola’s body. She subsequently refuses kitchen duty for three meals because of the injury 11 12.
Travel and Robin’s Capture
After most of the Troupe leaves Meteor City, Feitan remains with Chrollo, Machi, Pakunoda, and A Luo. He interferes with A Luo’s Water Divination by moving the leaf himself, then demands Witch Soup in exchange for possible protection on their travels 18 19.
That night, he sleeps unusually deeply after also sampling water from her test glass. Chrollo questions him about what he consumed, but the cause remains unresolved. Feitan and A Luo argue over whether the soup’s wine made him drunk 19 20.
During the group’s stay at a remote inn, Chrollo assigns A Luo to Feitan’s room under the cover of being his cousin. Feitan punishes her height joke by repeatedly waking her with killing intent; a feast finally buys her an uninterrupted night 22.
His search for Nen users leads to Robin. Feitan helps defeat and capture him, enabling Chrollo to steal Indoor Fish 25 26.
Poisoning and Recovery
Near Heavens Arena, Feitan kills two men but is stabbed by their remaining companion with a poison-coated dagger that bypasses his Ten. The poison is nonfatal but leaves him unable to move, and A Luo is assigned responsibility for his care 31 32.
Her attempts to appease him with food worsen his humiliation by increasing his need for help using the bathroom. Chrollo eventually administers an antidote fruit taken from the attacker, revealing that he had delayed its use to study it. Feitan regains mobility and attempts to pursue A Luo, but Pakunoda stops him 33 34.
Hisoka and the Treasure Festival
Feitan initiates the hotel confrontation with Hisoka and objects to his admission after being insulted. Nevertheless, Hisoka’s killing of Omokage entitles him to inherit Number Four under the Troupe’s rules. Feitan later retaliates against A Luo because he blames her for bringing Hisoka to them 40 41 43.
At East Gorteau’s Treasure Festival, Feitan and Shizuku eliminate the exhibition hall’s guards. Blondie then traps Feitan in a Nen Force Field, forcing him to rely on Shizuku and A Luo’s ranged attack to escape 46 47.
Hisoka interrupts Feitan’s killing strike, and the two fight until Chrollo intervenes. Back in Meteor City, Feitan interrogates Blondie and challenges Hisoka again after Shizuku says he would have lost. Pakunoda’s reminder that disputes must be settled by Spider Coin prevents the rematch 48 49.
