Background / History

Chrollo was born in Meteor City and originally dreamed of starting a theater troupe. The narration contrasts that ambition with his eventual position as one of the world's most notorious villains 25.

He and his companions swore to pursue their goals at any cost and remain on a path of villainy. While discussing what the Troupe cherishes, he recalls opening a horrific bag hanging from a tree, but the passage does not explain its contents or the surrounding incident 30.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Black hair and deep black eyes; often wears his hair slicked back 10 23 50.
  • Forehead marking: An inverted cross between his brows, concealed with a strip of cloth or lowered bangs when traveling 21 34.
  • Build: Lean and muscular, with eight sharply defined abdominal muscles 21.
  • Features: Described as handsome and refined, with deep-set eyes and finely sculpted features 14 25 42.
  • Clothing: Wears a black fur coat, but changes into dark casual clothes for a less conspicuous appearance 8 21.
  • Disguise effect: With his forehead marking hidden, he can appear harmless enough that strangers would not recognize him as the Troupe's leader 34.

Personality

Chrollo's curiosity is both analytical and possessive. He keeps A Luo because she interests him, repeatedly investigating the gap between her apparent experience and her knowledge of Nen. His scrutiny extends to small reactions: her relief at Feitan's absence, her familiarity with Pakunoda's activation conditions, and her lack of surprise at Skill Hunter 9 26 27.

His treatment of A Luo is deliberately transactional. He offers protection in exchange for information, reopens her wounds to examine her healing, and forcibly awakens her Nen because traveling with a non-user would be inconvenient. Polite speech and gentle gestures do not prevent him from putting her life at risk 15 17 18.

He is an accomplished actor. When Granny Heidi questions A Luo's workload and scars, he invents an elaborate family cooking tradition and dismisses the scars as childish tricks. His performance persuades Heidi to apologize and offer a lodging discount 24.

Chrollo distinguishes attachment from conventional family affection. He insists that the Spiders cherish something, yet cannot decide whether that means themselves, their companions, or the Troupe as a whole. He is also willing to accept Hisoka despite knowing that the newcomer has ulterior motives 30 43.

Abilities & Skills

Skill Hunter

Skill Hunter allows Chrollo to steal and use other people's Nen abilities through a conjured book 26.

  • Places Robin's hand against the handprint on the cover while stealing Indoor Fish 26.
  • Opens the corresponding page to activate Indoor Fish 26.
  • Uses another page to seal A Luo's mouth, later removing the effect 39.
  • Begins an unidentified incantation during the battle with Hisoka and resumes it while exchanging blows 40 41.
  • The full theft conditions are not disclosed. Chrollo calls them closely guarded secrets unknown even to the Zoldyck Family 27.

Indoor Fish

Stolen from Robin, Indoor Fish summons monstrous fish that require a sealed room to remain active 26.

  • Chrollo identifies the enclosed-room requirement during Robin's attack 26.
  • Feitan destroys a window, causing Robin's fish to vanish 26.
  • Chrollo's own test summons also dissolve in the resulting draft 26.
  • Despite the limitation, Chrollo considers the ability worth acquiring, arguing that usefulness depends on how an ability is employed 26.

Combat and Nen Control

Chrollo combines physical attacks, weapons, and stolen abilities rather than relying on a single fighting method 16 41.

  • Exploits A Luo's distraction of Silva to inflict severe dagger wounds to Silva's chest and abdomen, prompting his retreat 16.
  • Evades Hisoka's Nen-enhanced cards and exchanges blows with him 39 41.
  • Knocks Buta unconscious with one hand chop during the Treasure Festival operation 48.
  • Forces A Luo's Nen awakening with a Nen-infused strike, then instructs her to imagine aura flowing through her body 18.

Deduction and Investigation

Chrollo investigates by combining behavioral clues, outside intelligence, and controlled tests 9 12 25.

  • Identifies Feitan as the absent member A Luo fears after questioning Phinks and Shalnark 9.
  • Has Shalnark verify A Luo's supposed former identity and Zoldyck knowledge rather than accepting her confession outright 12.
  • Concludes that her rebirth is genuine while her explanation contains concealed or false information 13.
  • Finds the gap in Feitan's town-wide search: the inn's guests had not been checked for Nen users 25.
  • Threatens Malena to expose A Luo's priorities and provoke a revealing Nen response 30.

Leadership and Deception

Chrollo directs a group whose members retain considerable personal freedom but follow his operational orders 14 45.

  • Plans a counterattack against the Elders who hired the Zoldyck Family, leaving himself, Machi, and the injured Number Eight as bait 15.
  • Coordinates recruitment, intelligence gathering, and robberies 43 45.
  • Enforces the prohibition on fighting between Troupe members 48.
  • Uses the fictional family relationship established by A Luo as a public cover, playing her father opposite Pakunoda 21 22 24 28.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Skill Hunter book — Conjured volume bearing a handprint on its cover; stores and activates stolen abilities 16 26.
  • Dagger used against Silva — Inflicts severe wounds during the assassination attempt 16.
  • Defense-bypassing dagger — Taken from a man in the Dark Alley after it penetrates Feitan's Nen defense. This acquisition occurs after the Silva encounter 31 32.
  • Ancient books — Frequently reads at the base, during travel, and in hotels 10 18 39.
  • The Mysteries of the Ten Rarest Gemstones — Gives this book to the Spiders after examining A Luo's unusual vitality; it describes the Life Stone's capacity to create life 17.

Relationships

  • A Luo / Lola Reno — Captive, “collectible,” and the Troupe's cook. Chrollo investigates her secrets, forbids others from harming her, and eventually offers freedom and Malena's location in exchange for disclosure or help obtaining the Life Stone 9 34 50.
  • Pakunoda — Trusted subordinate whose memory-reading ability supports his investigation of A Luo. She also plays A Luo's mother in their traveling cover 9 21 24.
  • Machi — Subordinate whose intuition he takes seriously. She fights Silva alongside him and directs his search toward Robin and the later encounter with Hisoka 16 17 25 34.
  • Shalnark — Intelligence gatherer tasked with checking A Luo's confession, locating recruitment candidates, and corroborating Buta's Life Stone information 12 43 50.
  • Feitan — Combatant and interrogator whom Chrollo summons to pressure A Luo. Chrollo later restrains his conflict with Hisoka through Troupe rules 10 11 48.
  • Hisoka — Opponent turned Number Four, admitted after killing Omokage. Hisoka wants a one-on-one duel with Chrollo and asks A Luo to help arrange it 41 43.
  • Shizuku — Recruited to fill the vacant Number Eight position. Chrollo plans to steal the Star of East Gorteau as her welcome gift 43 45.
  • Silva Zoldyck — Assassin who attacks the Troupe's base. Chrollo wounds him severely but subsequently learns that Silva killed Number Eight before leaving 16 17.
  • Buta / Blondie — Captured Treasure Festival guard whose ability and information about the Life Stone become valuable to Chrollo 48 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Capturing and Investigating A Luo

The Troupe takes A Luo after her father's death and brings her to Meteor City. Chrollo's interest intensifies when she recognizes Pakunoda's ability despite apparently learning about Nen only recently. Pakunoda cannot access her past-life memories, leaving Chrollo to investigate through questioning and behavioral observation 8 9.

After Feitan's interrogation, A Luo claims to have been Kasuga, a deceased Zoldyck butler. Chrollo orders an investigation, accepts that she has been reborn, but rejects her account as the whole truth. He instructs the Spiders to treat her as a potentially dangerous collectible 11 12 13.

The Zoldyck Assassination Attempt

Chrollo retaliates against the Elders who commissioned the assassins while remaining at the base as bait. During Silva's attack, he throws A Luo toward the assassin and exploits the resulting distraction to wound him. Silva retreats after killing Number Eight 15 16 17.

Once the client's death ends the Zoldyck assignment, Chrollo turns toward replacing Number Eight. Before departing, he forcibly awakens A Luo's Nen, preventing her planned departure with Uvogin 18 19.

Ability Hunting and Hisoka's Recruitment

In a remote town, Chrollo locates Robin and steals Indoor Fish. A Luo's unsurprised reaction exposes further inconsistencies in her explanation of what she knows 25 26 27.

Near Heavens Arena, he acquires the defense-bypassing dagger and encounters Hisoka. He abandons A Luo with Hisoka to test their relationship; she later returns with Hisoka's challenge. The ensuing group battle ends when Hisoka requests membership, and Chrollo accepts him as Number Four 32 34 39 41.

Shizuku and the Treasure Festival

Following Shalnark's lead, Chrollo recruits Shizuku. He organizes a robbery of East Gorteau's Treasure Festival, presenting the Star of East Gorteau as a welcome gift while also pursuing information about the Life Stone 43 45 50.

During the operation, he captures Buta and stops Hisoka and Feitan from fighting. Buta is taken back to Meteor City, where the Troupe extracts his information and Chrollo steals his ability 48 49 50.

The Life Stone Bargain

Chrollo reveals that the Troupe has spent the past year searching for the Life Stone and has now corroborated Buta's account. He also discloses that Malena is imprisoned following the attack arranged by A Luo's uncle 50.

He offers A Luo two routes to freedom: reveal all her secrets, or help him obtain the stone. She chooses the expedition and demands that he honor his promise to release her and provide her mother's location 50.
