Background / History
Tatsumaki escaped an evil psychic organization whose treatment of her left her deeply distrustful. Her childhood memories include imprisonment in a laboratory alongside Fubuki. She subsequently sought to make others fear her strength so that neither sister would suffer the same vulnerability again 162 318.
Blast gave Tatsumaki hope during childhood. She joined the Hero Association to follow in his footsteps, initially treating monster elimination as her primary responsibility rather than personally handling civilian rescue 20 524.
Her encounter with Josen in A City challenged that approach. After she crushed the Crane Monster, he immediately descended to help the injured, prompting her to join the rescue effort. Their later interactions gradually made her more conscious of collateral damage and more willing to accept help herself 20 162 319.
Appearance
- Build: Petite and slender, with an appearance that causes others to mistake her for a child despite her being an adult 88 644.
- Hair: Emerald green; her familiar hairstyle is repeatedly compared to spinach or seaweed. After her Herrscher transformation, her hair remains waist-length even after she cancels the transformation 160 320 644.
- Hero costume: A dark green or black high-slit dress, which she explicitly regards as her combat outfit. Her psychic power prevents unwanted exposure 229 319 646.
- Outerwear: Wears coats over her dress during missions, including a brownish-black fur coat and a pale yellow wool trench coat 100 644.
- Psychic aura: Usually surrounded by green light while flying or using her powers; her hair and clothing lift with stronger releases 20 90.
- Art-style changes: Frequently shifts into a simplified “powerhouse” style with dead-fish eyes, especially when irritated, embarrassed, or behaving affectionately around Josen 318 525 644.
Personality
Tatsumaki is proud, abrasive, competitive, and quick to anger. She considers herself the strongest psychic and initially treats Josen's higher ranking as an insult that can only be settled through combat. References to her stature, childish appearance, or supposed weakness readily provoke her 77 88 92 104.
Her harsh manner conceals genuine protectiveness. During her confrontation with Josen at headquarters, she shields Sitch from their clash even after using psychic power to silence him. Josen also notes that, despite the damage accompanying her battles, she saves substantially more civilians than many other heroes 89 92.
Her concern for Fubuki is especially controlling. She follows her sister without permission, belittles the Fubuki Group, and repeatedly attempts to separate Fubuki from companions she considers incapable of protecting her. Even after conceding some independence, she remains willing to threaten the group when she believes they are holding Fubuki back 215 230 452 660.
Josen brings out a more trusting and openly affectionate side of her. She enjoys his cooking, attention, and reassurance while frequently disguising her pleasure behind complaints. Her growing restraint is noticeable enough that Association staff later remark on how much gentler she has become 228 416 644.
Abilities & Skills
Telekinesis and Force-Field Control
Tatsumaki can apply immense psychic force while retaining extremely fine control.
- Crushing and compression: Flattens the Crane Monster, then compresses its remains and airborne blood into a metal cube 20.
- Projectile interception: Stops hundreds of Metal Knight's shells in flight, then suspends their fragments and flames after remote detonation 161.
- Rescue barriers: Uses protective psychic fields to move injured civilians. Mechanical Psychic Powers later adapts her rescue-barrier technique into a close-fitting combat shield 20 464.
- Large-scale excavation: Extracts the Monster Association's underground base as a colossal stone pillar. Other psychics recognize the millimeter-level precision required to preserve its structure while limiting effects on the surrounding city 460.
- Gravity-field training: Places trainees under increased gravitational pressure during running drills 417 660.
Large-Scale Psychic Attacks
Her strongest techniques reshape terrain and contain destructive forces on a city-threatening scale.
- Compressed psychic sphere: Encloses Josen in a sphere more than ten kilometers wide and contracts it through the surrounding land and sea. The same technique had previously reduced a Dragon-level monster to dust 90.
- Super Psychic Tornado: Engulfs the Lava King in a reinforced debris vortex. The tornado contains the city-destroying explosion of its energy core 217 218.
- Earth Eye-Opening Cannon: Fires a devastating psychic blast at Josen after breaking his illusion; he survives and escapes through Instant Transmission 103 104.
- Unrestricted release: Shatters mountains and carves a vast abyss while venting inside the Imaginary Space 224.
- Honkai-infused output: A later emotional surge coats an apartment building in destructive green light. Josen detects Honkai Energy within it and recognizes planet-threatening potential 524.
Flight and Teleportation
- Psychic flight: Habitually floats rather than walks. By streamlining her surrounding force field, she can exceed the speed of sound 89 314.
- Psychic Power Warp: Her first copied teleportation technique requires a constructed passage and pre-established coordinates. She uses it to return to an aircraft dozens of kilometers away 104.
- Instant Transmission: The evolved technique supports rapid, repeated use in battle and travel across an entire continent in an instant 289.
Herrscher Spatial Authority
After acquiring Void Herrscher powers, Tatsumaki gains direct authority over space.
- Detects and navigates between dimensions within the collection of Imaginary Spaces 320.
- Transports herself together with the throne beneath her 320.
- Immediately understands the nature of Homeless Emperor's artificial world after being drawn into it, recognizing its scenery as a crude replication rather than a living environment 665.
Psychic Perception and Mental Resistance
- Psychic detection: Senses other psychics, tracks Josen's psychic frequency, and locates hostile presences underground 20 89 460.
- Stand perception: Can see F-kid and recognize his unusually pure psychic fluctuations, unlike ordinary observers 162.
- Resistance to illusions: Josen's Sharingan Genjutsu temporarily immobilizes her and cuts off her perception of her powers, but cannot hold her for long 103.
- Resistance to mental corruption: Rejects Honkai's false claim of maternal affection, recovers her identity, and suppresses the energy overtaking her body 318 319.
Physical Conditioning and Limitations
- Her psychic reinforcement gives her physical abilities well beyond those of an ordinary person, but early on her body remains a comparative weakness. Josen defeats her by closing in, restraining her, and knocking her unconscious with a headbutt 91 94.
- Later training raises her physical attributes to Herrscher level and greatly improves her defense 416.
- Her telekinesis is not irresistible: Josen withstands her attacks, while attempting to lift Saitama produces resistance she compares to moving the planet 89 90 223.
- Tremendous output does not eliminate collateral damage. Her anger destroys a city block during the Fubuki Group dispute, and extracting the Monster Association base also uproots Saitama's apartment 451 452 460.
Equipment / Items
- Slit battle dress — Her signature hero costume, protected against exposure by psychic power 229 646.
- Emerald-green crystal bracelet — Purchased for her by Josen during a shopping trip 314.
- Mobile phone — Carries a compact phone beneath her dress 646.
- Magnetic Field Mark — Placed on her by Josen so that he can locate her and use Instant Transmission when she needs help 229.
Associated Ability Card
The SSR 100% Psychic Ability Card drops from Tatsumaki after the A City rescue and is absorbed by Josen. Its description identifies her talent as one of humanity's strongest; the listed effects belong to the card 20.
| Card Effect | Description |
|---|---|
| Natural-born Psychic | Maximum psychic affinity, faster activation, improved recovery, and a 90% reduction in consumption. |
| Force Field King | Faster, stronger construction and control of psychic force fields. |
| Psychic Storm | Doubles the power of large-scale psychic techniques. |
| Overload State | Entrusts psychic power to instinct to exceed normal limits. |
Relationships
- Josen — Initially a ranking rival and combat opponent, later her romantic partner. He challenges her destructive habits, helps her accept Fubuki's independence, trains her, and provides reassurance she rarely accepts from others 77 162 229 416 453.
- Fubuki — Younger sister and the focus of her intense protectiveness. Tatsumaki's attempts to keep her safe frequently conflict with Fubuki's wish for independence and loyalty to her group 215 230 450 452.
- Blast — Childhood source of hope and the hero whose example led her to join the Association. He remains one of the few people she fully acknowledges 20 77 524.
- Sitch — Association executive who handles her complaints and attempts to contain her outbursts. Despite treating him harshly, she protects him during her confrontation with Josen 77 89.
- F-kid — Josen's Stand, whose nature initially fascinates her. She later greets him warmly and shakes his hand 162 225.
- Saitama — Their early exchanges nearly become fights after mutual insults. Through Josen, she later spends more time with him and the Hot Pot Group 219 223 647.
- Fubuki Group — Regards its members as weak and unsuitable companions for her sister. Josen persuades her to let them prove they can protect Fubuki, but her hostility resurfaces during training 452 660.
- Iggy — Recognizes his psychic power and treats him as a rival for Josen's attention. He later outpaces the heroes in her gravity-field drills 647 660.
Story Role / Major Arcs
A City Rescue and Ranking Dispute
Tatsumaki destroys the Crane Monster and assists Josen in rescuing civilians. The psychic talent card generated afterward becomes a major enhancement to Josen's abilities 20 21.
When the newly established S-Class places Josen above her, she demands a fight. Their eventual coastal battle ends after he withstands her strongest attacks and knocks her unconscious at close range 77 88 90 91.
Growing Trust and the Honkai Trial
After becoming increasingly involved with Josen and his friends, Tatsumaki accepts the Imaginary Space as somewhere she can release her power without damaging Earth. Their relationship develops into an acknowledged romance, initially concealed from the public during their outings 224 225 228 230.
Josen later presents her with condensed Honkai Energy. Inside the Mind Dimension, her memories and powers are suppressed while her childhood imprisonment is recreated. She rejects Honkai's attempt to exploit her need for family, recovers her strength, and subsequently emerges with Void Herrscher powers 314 318 319 320.
Hero Training and the Monster Association
Josen recruits Tatsumaki as dean of students for the hero training class. Her opening warning that unsuccessful students might die establishes her intimidating approach, while gravity-field exercises become part of the trainees' conditioning 338 417.
Before the Monster Association operation, Josen stops her from incapacitating the Fubuki Group. During the operation itself, she exposes the underground headquarters by pulling it out of the earth 452 460.
Second Training Intake and Homeless Emperor
Tatsumaki takes an active instructional role when Fubuki and her group join the second training intake. Her frustration with their performance nearly leads to another attack, which Josen interrupts 660.
She later encounters Homeless Emperor, whose energy matches her current output. Drawn into his alternate-dimensional world, she immediately recognizes its artificial nature; the documented encounter ends with him proclaiming that its infinite energy guarantees his victory 664 665.
