Personality
Matt is suspicious of unfamiliar people and quick to challenge their explanations. He watches Zhou Zhu closely from their first meeting, questions whether someone without a Digivice can be a DigiDestined, and asks whether Gennai is working with Devimon 7 29 33.
His concern for T.K. usually takes the form of restrictions rather than open reassurance. He keeps his younger brother away from the trapped Andromon and stops him from approaching suspicious vending machines. After the mountain rockslide, he privately feels relieved that T.K. is unharmed without expressing that relief aloud 10 13 21.
Matt is also proud, stubborn, and prone to escalating arguments. He repeatedly attacks Zhou Zhu despite losing their previous fights, and resents Tai for defending someone he considers an outsider. His hostility extends to dismissing Zhou Zhu’s usefulness because he lacks a Digivice and envying Wisemon’s strength 12 13 30 36 38.
His caution becomes more pronounced after encounters with Andromon and Monzaemon. He opposes exploring the mountain because the group has already faced enemies beyond its strength, and initially favors remaining on File Island rather than risking the Server Continent 19 34.
Abilities & Skills
Digivice Use
Matt can use his Digivice to support Gabumon’s evolution and dispel the darkness controlling Digimon 12 29 44.
- Digivolution: Enables Gabumon to become Garurumon for combat 44.
- Purification: Joins Tai in directing Digivice light at Leomon, freeing him from the Black Gears 29.
- Limits: Garurumon is defeated by the strengthened, controlled Leomon and forced back into Rookie form by Etemon’s Love Beam 29 44.
Leadership and Danger Assessment
Matt takes charge when Tai is absent and sometimes identifies threats before the others approach them 13 20.
- Leads the remaining children after Tai and Sora fly ahead to search for Joe 20.
- Holds T.K. back from vending machines that conceal Sukamon 13.
- Suggests splitting up when another Sukamon horde pursues the group 14.
Unarmed Fighting
Matt readily uses punches and kicks during disputes, but cannot match Zhou Zhu’s Digimon-enhanced physique 12 13.
- Zhou Zhu intercepts his attacks and forces him to his knees during their first confrontation 12 13.
- A later counterpunch knocks him unconscious 36.
- Gabumon explicitly warns him that he cannot beat Zhou Zhu in a fight 36.
Equipment / Items
- Digivice — Supports Gabumon’s digivolution and emits light capable of purifying Black Gears 29 44.
- Digivolution Tag — Obtained from the cache hidden in an underwater cave; intended for use with a Crest to enable higher forms 33 38.
Relationships
- T.K. Takaishi — Younger brother. Matt closely supervises his safety, although his pride sometimes undermines that care: he rejects Candlemon’s warmth while T.K. is visibly shivering 8 10 13 18.
- Gabumon — Digimon partner. Gabumon prioritizes rescuing Matt even while trapped himself, saves him after Whamon expels the group, and urges him to stop fighting Zhou Zhu 16 36.
- Tai — Teammate and frequent opponent in arguments. Tai restrains Matt during his attacks on Zhou Zhu and threatens to use Greymon if Matt brings Garurumon into their personal dispute 13. They nevertheless cooperate to purify Leomon 29.
- Zhou Zhu — Distrusted fellow traveler. Their disagreements repeatedly become physical, and Matt continues seeking retaliation after being defeated 12 13 36 45.
- Sora — Teammate who repeatedly intervenes on Matt’s behalf during his conflicts with Zhou Zhu 13 36 45.
- Elecmon — Clashes with Matt over his treatment of Zhou Zhu. Matt dismisses Elecmon’s criticism because he is only a Rookie Digimon 30.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Factory and Toy Town
Matt urges the group to search the factory rather than continue introductions. He accompanies Tai to free the trapped Digimon, while ordering T.K. to remain behind; Garurumon subsequently fights the rampaging Andromon 8 9 10.
After escaping Sukamon, Matt blames Zhou Zhu for not explaining their attack clearly enough and initiates a fight. Tai prevents him from escalating the dispute through Garurumon. Later, Monzaemon captures Matt and several other children, leaving them behaving unnaturally under the influence of toys until Mimi’s rescue 12 13 15 19.
Mountain Search and Leomon’s Rescue
Despite opposing the mountain expedition, Matt leads the others after Joe goes missing. The group encounters Leomon and Ogremon, survives Devimon’s rockslide, and takes shelter in an illusory castle before being scattered by Devimon 19 20 21 23.
Matt later arrives riding Garurumon, who intercepts Ogremon’s attack. When direct combat fails against controlled Leomon, Matt follows Tai’s example and uses his Digivice to help purify him 28 29.
Voyage to the Server Continent
Matt initially wants to remain on File Island, but agrees to leave after T.K. and Gabumon support the journey. During the voyage, another confrontation with Zhou Zhu leaves him unconscious. The group then retrieves the Digivolution Tags and reaches the Server Continent aboard Whamon 34 36 38.
Etemon’s Attack
Garurumon’s attempt to confront Etemon fails when Love Beam forces him back into Gabumon. Matt then draws attention to Wisemon as the group’s available Perfect-level fighter, but accuses Zhou Zhu of deliberately watching them struggle. Zhou Zhu beats him until Joe persuades him to stop and defend the village 44 45.
