Ch. 21Night raid

The DigiDestined escaped Devimon’s rockslide, found a mountain castle, and fell asleep there, unaware that it was an illusion set as a trap. Devimon and his allies prepared to attack, but Tai and Agumon came out of their room before the ambush began.

  • Devimon shattered the cliff above the group, but the Champion Digimon destroyed the falling boulders before they could hurt anyone.
  • Joe noticed that Leomon and Ogremon had disappeared, and the group decided to descend the mountain while their partners were exhausted.
  • Mimi spotted a castle, and the DigiDestined hurried there to spend the night as Zhou Zhu suspected it was one of Devimon’s illusions.
  • Zhou Zhu pretended to eat the castle’s fake food and sleep while keeping Candlemon alert for Devimon’s attack.
  • Devimon emerged from a painting at midnight and met Ogremon and the controlled Leomon, but Tai and Agumon came out of their room before the ambush began.

Ch. 22A Life Beyond His Control

Tai and Agumon were ambushed by Ogremon, Leomon, and Devimon while using the bathroom, and Devimon revealed that the castle was an illusion. The children were thrown into the air as Devimon explained his plan to conquer the world, while Zhou Zhu stayed hidden and feared for his life.

  • Ogremon burst out of the neighboring bathroom stall after Agumon's fart exposed him, and Tai and Agumon fled into the hallway.
  • Leomon blocked Tai and Agumon's path, while Devimon appeared and restored the ruined castle by dispelling the illusion.
  • Devimon sent the sleeping children and their beds flying, while Candlemon arrived to support Tai on Zhou Zhu's orders.
  • Devimon told Tai that the Black Gears controlled File Island and that he planned to eliminate the chosen children before conquering the world beyond the sea.
  • Devimon split apart File Island to reveal the Black Gears as Zhou Zhu remained hidden, worried that Ogremon could kill him.

Ch. 23The light of digivolution

Leomon attacked Tai under Devimon’s control, but the Digivice’s light freed him and filled Candlemon with data. Leomon stayed behind to fight Devimon and Ogremon while Tai, Agumon, and Candlemon escaped toward the sea, and Leomon was struck by Devimon’s Demon Claw.

  • Leomon overpowered Agumon and seized Tai, while Devimon ordered him to kill the boy.
  • Sora tossed Tai’s Digivice down, and its light freed Leomon and poured data into Candlemon, which Zhou Zhu transferred into himself.
  • Devimon attacked Sora and the other children, but Leomon intervened and then faced Ogremon as well.
  • Leomon shattered the rock beneath Tai, Agumon, and Candlemon, sending them down toward the sea; Zhou Zhu swam to Candlemon after jumping from a cliff.
  • Leomon held off Ogremon and urged the children to escape, but Devimon attacked him from behind with his Demon Claw.

Ch. 24Data reserves

Zhou Zhu rescued Candlemon after they became separated from Tai and the others, and Candlemon digivolved into Wizardmon on the main section of File Island. Zhou Zhu discovered that Wizardmon had several powerful evolution paths and enough stored data to eventually reach Ultimate, while he remained stranded with him.

  • Zhou Zhu struggled to catch up with Tai and the others, so Candlemon jumped into the water to help him.
  • Zhou Zhu reached Candlemon and kept him afloat as they swam back to the main section of File Island.
  • Candlemon digivolved into Wizardmon after they reached shore.
  • Zhou Zhu sensed Wizardmon's evolution branches, including paths to Dunamons and Gankoomon, and found that he had accumulated enough data to reach Ultimate.
  • Zhou Zhu estimated the data thresholds for successive evolution stages and considered how stored data explained the strength differences among Digimon.

Ch. 25Evolution paths

Zhou Zhu considered how much more data Wizardmon needed to evolve and practiced with his avatar while planning to strengthen his own body. He concluded that powerful special moves were essential to combat and left himself focused on finding a way to gain fighting skills.

  • Zhou Zhu calculated that he and Wizardmon held 130,000 units of data, enough for an ordinary Ultimate evolution, and considered gathering another wave to raise the total to 270,000.
  • Zhou Zhu calmed himself and practiced special moves and finishing moves with his Wizardmon avatar inside Devimon’s lair.
  • Zhou Zhu hoped Wizardmon would reach the Perfect stage before Tai and the others returned to fight Devimon, since Wisemon could overpower Devimon.
  • Zhou Zhu decided his main body needed more fighting power, despite its Champion-level physical condition, because Wizardmon might not be able to protect him.
  • Zhou Zhu reasoned that a Digimon’s special moves and data reserves determined its combat strength, and that powerful skills could let one attack overwhelm a stronger opponent.

Ch. 26The ability to protect himself

Zhou Zhu tested Wizardmon’s combat skills and learned that his Champion-level body gave him speed and strength but few effective attacks. Elsewhere, Devimon sent out Black Gears, Tai continued through the snow with Agumon, and Elecmon confronted T.K. at the Village of Beginnings.

  • Zhou Zhu realized he lacked special moves and decided to practice Wizardmon’s skills and fighting style.
  • Devimon sent Black Gears across File Island while Leomon remained under his control.
  • Tai and Agumon struggled through a snowy wilderness, and Tai resolved to keep going for his friends and Kari.
  • Zhou Zhu dodged Wizardmon’s Thunder Cloud and tackled him, finding that his copied Tackle caused little damage.
  • Elecmon returned to the Village of Beginnings and ordered T.K. to put down a newly hatched baby; T.K. explained that he had meant to help care for it.

Ch. 27Danger Approaches

T.K. and Patamon found Elecmon, who told them Zhou Zhu had last been at Andromon’s Factory a week earlier and warned them about aggressive Digimon. They stayed to help care for the babies, but controlled Leomon later spotted them and charged in to eliminate the DigiDestined.

  • T.K. and Patamon asked Elecmon to take them to Zhou Zhu, but Elecmon said he had last seen him at Andromon’s Factory a week earlier.
  • Elecmon warned T.K. and Patamon that normally kind Digimon had become aggressive, and they recognized that the Black Gears were responsible.
  • T.K. and Patamon decided to stay at Elecmon’s home and wait for Tai, Matt, and the others to find them.
  • Elecmon persuaded T.K. and Patamon to help care for the baby Digimon, and they spent the next few days doing chores.
  • Controlled Leomon spotted T.K. and Patamon, drew the King of Beasts Sword, and charged down the mountain to eliminate the DigiDestined.

Ch. 28Return

Devimon sent a Black Gear-controlled Leomon and Ogremon to attack Elecmon, T.K., and the babies, and the other DigiDestined arrived to help. Leomon grew stronger after Devimon added more Black Gears, knocking down Garurumon and Greymon as Wizardmon and the others joined the fight.

  • T.K. carried the babies to cover while Patamon joined Elecmon to fight Leomon, but Leomon shattered Patamon's Air Shot and blocked Elecmon's Shining Thunder with his sword.
  • Ogremon ambushed Elecmon with Supreme Fist and knocked him out, leaving Patamon to face both Champion Digimon.
  • Matt arrived with Garurumon and intercepted Ogremon's attack, while Tai arrived with Greymon and struck Leomon with Super Flame.
  • Devimon sent more Black Gears into Leomon, who grew stronger and knocked Garurumon down with Beast King Fist.
  • Zhou Zhu arrived with Wizardmon, whom he identified as Candlemon's Champion form, but Leomon knocked Greymon down and then attacked Wizardmon.
  • Wizardmon used Magic Game to evade Leomon's attack, and Kabuterimon arrived carrying Izzy and Mimi.

Ch. 29Borrowing the Connection Again

Tai and Matt used their Digivices to free Leomon from the Black Gears, and Leomon told the group about the DigiDestined legend. The group learned that Zhou Zhu had no Digivice because Wizardmon was his friend, not his partner.

  • Izzy explained that the Digivices could dispel darkness, and Tai used his to drive Black Gears out of Leomon.
  • Matt raised his Digivice too, while Kabuterimon kept Ogremon from interrupting; Leomon returned to normal and Ogremon withdrew.
  • At the Village of Beginnings, Leomon told Tai and the others that a prophecy said chosen children from another world would save the Digital World.
  • Matt questioned whether Zhou Zhu was a DigiDestined because he had no Digivice, and Leomon admitted he did not know why Zhou Zhu had come.
  • Elecmon explained that Wizardmon had been a Village of Beginnings baby who stayed with Zhou Zhu as a friend, not as his partner.

Ch. 30Heading to Infinity Mountain

Tai and the others set out for Infinity Mountain to confront Devimon, while Devimon absorbed Ogremon and the Black Gears to grow into a giant. As Devimon stopped the group from digivolving, Zhou Zhu realized Wizardmon was close to evolving but might not be able to help in time.

  • Matt dismissed Zhou Zhu and argued with Tai and Elecmon about Wizardmon's role, while Zhou Zhu silently resolved to remember Matt's remarks.
  • Tai led the group toward Infinity Mountain, and Leomon joined them; Sora and Joe traveled there separately with Birdramon and Ikkakumon.
  • Devimon killed Ogremon with Death Claw, turning him into Black Gears, then drew the scattered Black Gears into himself.
  • Sora saw the Black Gears gathering around Infinity Mountain, and Birdramon sensed the darkness as Sora and Joe hurried onward.
  • Devimon burst through the palace and confronted Tai and the others as a giant; he interrupted their preparations to digivolve.
  • Zhou Zhu sensed that Wizardmon was close to digivolving but doubted he could evolve in time to help against Devimon.

Ch. 31The Light of Hope

Devimon overwhelmed the DigiDestined and their Digimon, leaving T.K. and Patamon exposed. Patamon protected T.K. and finally digivolved into Angemon, confronting Devimon as the battle turned.

  • Sora and Joe arrived with Ikkakumon and Birdramon, giving the DigiDestined time to break free and digivolve.
  • Devimon easily defeated Greymon, Garurumon, Cactuar, Kabuterimon, Wizardmon, and Leomon, while Ogremon emerged from Devimon's body and struck Leomon.
  • Devimon targeted T.K. and Patamon, and the other Digimon tried to hold him back before he flung them all aside.
  • Patamon repeatedly attacked Devimon to protect T.K., then flew in front of Devimon's hand and was engulfed by it.
  • Patamon digivolved into Angemon, and Angemon commanded the darkness to disappear.

Ch. 32Old Gennai

Angemon defeated Devimon with the combined power of the DigiDestined’s Digivices, then vanished and left T.K. a Digi-Egg. With Devimon gone but stronger darkness still looming, the children remained stranded on File Island as Gennai appeared before them.

  • Angemon drew power from the DigiDestined’s Digivices, defeated Devimon with Hand of Fate, and vanished alongside him, leaving T.K. a Digi-Egg.
  • The children learned that Angemon could be reborn from the Digi-Egg, while File Island’s scattered pieces began returning to the main island.
  • Ogremon fled when Leomon confronted him, and the DigiDestined realized defeating Devimon had not taken them home.
  • The ground split open, and a strange device brought Gennai before the DigiDestined.
  • Tai asked Gennai who he was while Zhou Zhu watched cautiously, worrying about Gennai and Homeostasis’s plans.

Ch. 33A ghost?

Gennai appeared in Devimon’s lair, explained that he lived in the Digital World, and asked the DigiDestined to travel to the Server Continent to defeat a stronger enemy. He left them a map and said their Digimon would need Crests and Digivolution Tags to reach higher forms, while the group still had no answers about returning home.

  • Matt questioned whether Gennai was working with Devimon, and Gennai said he was on their side.
  • Gennai told the DigiDestined he came from the Server Continent and did not know who brought them to the Digital World or how they could return.
  • Gennai asked the group to reach the Server Continent and defeat an enemy stronger than Devimon, explaining that their Digimon would need to digivolve further.
  • Gennai showed them a Digivolution Tag and said the Crests were scattered across the Server Continent while Devimon had likely hidden the Tags.
  • Gennai sent a map to Izzy’s computer, then disappeared, and the group decided to get down the mountain first.

Ch. 34Preparations before departure

The children debated whether to leave File Island for Server Continent, then agreed to set out together. The next morning they began cutting trees for their journey, and Leomon arrived with several Digimon friends to help.

  • Tai urged the children to head for Server Continent, while Joe and Matt argued that they should stay on File Island and Izzy worried about crossing the sea.
  • T.K., the other children, and their Digimon partners supported leaving, and Joe eventually agreed to go with them.
  • The next morning, the children and their Digimon began felling trees to prepare for the trip.
  • Leomon offered help and arrived with Mojyamon, Centarumon, and Elecmon.
  • Monzaemon, Frigimon, and Meramon also appeared to help the group.

Ch. 35Whamon

After helping the children build a raft, Leomon said goodbye as they sailed out to sea. Whamon swallowed the raft and the DigiDestined, who discovered a Black Gear embedded in his stomach as the raft began dissolving.

  • Leomon used Beast King Fist to help build the raft, and T.K.'s Digi-Egg hatched into Yuramon.
  • Tai and the others thanked Leomon and sailed away from shore.
  • A huge wave struck the raft, and Whamon appeared before the children and swallowed them.
  • The children landed in Whamon's stomach, where green digestive liquid began dissolving their raft.
  • Sora spotted a Black Gear in Whamon's stomach, and Agumon realized it was making Whamon vicious.

Ch. 36The Journey

Tai purified the Black Gear inside Whamon, while Zhou Zhu gained more data and knocked Matt unconscious after Matt attacked him. Whamon expelled the children from his blowhole, apologized, and agreed to take them toward the Server Continent, a journey he said would take five days.

  • Palmon restrained the Black Gear with poisonous vines, and Tai purified it with his Digivice as Zhou Zhu gained another 140,000 data.
  • Matt challenged Zhou Zhu over his mocking remark, but Zhou Zhu dodged his punch and knocked him unconscious.
  • Whamon expelled the children and their raft through his blowhole, and Gabumon helped the revived Matt onto a piece of wood.
  • Whamon apologized for his rough treatment and said the Black Gear had caused him to lose control.
  • Tai asked Whamon how far the Server Continent was, and Whamon said the trip would take five days.

Ch. 37Perfect

Whamon took the children toward Server Continent and revealed where Devimon had hidden something in an underwater cave. After Wizardmon digivolved into Wisemon, the group found a convenience store in the cave and encountered Drimogemon guarding the hidden Tags.

  • Whamon offered to take the children to Server Continent, and Wizardmon digivolved into Wisemon along the way.
  • Whamon told Tai that he had seen Devimon hide something in the sea and led the group to an underwater cave.
  • Tai and the others entered the cave and found a brightly lit convenience store.
  • Drimogemon emerged from the ground, showed a Black Gear, and ordered the children to leave the area by Devimon's command.
  • Zhou Zhu sent Wisemon to deal with Drimogemon while Tai and the others prepared to search for the Tags.

Ch. 38Wisemon

Wisemon defeated Drimogemon, allowing Zhou Zhu and the others to find and distribute the Tags before continuing across the sea. After five days aboard Whamon, the group reached the Server Continent, where Tai went ashore first and called for everyone to follow, while Mimi hesitated because she feared heights.

  • Wisemon rushed ahead and knocked Drimogemon unconscious with a single Core Dart, while Tai and Matt marveled at his strength.
  • The group searched Drimogemon's tunnels, and Yuramon found the box of seven Tags; Izzy suspected the Digivices limited the other Digimon's power.
  • The group distributed the Tags and continued toward the Server Continent aboard Whamon.
  • On the fifth day at sea, Tai spotted land and woke the others, who celebrated their arrival despite Joe and Mimi mishearing his announcement.
  • Tai climbed ashore and called for everyone to follow, but Mimi remained on Whamon because she was afraid of heights.

Ch. 39Bukamon

The children reached a forest village expecting to find Koromon, but discovered it was inhabited by Bukamon instead. After Mimi and Palmon ran into the village, the Bukamon seized Mimi and carried her away, leaving the others startled.

  • Whamon sent the children ashore, and Zhou Zhu caught Mimi when she nearly fell.
  • Palmon told Mimi that a Koromon village lay ahead, and the group set off across the wasteland.
  • Agumon scented Koromon and led the group to a forest, where they found a village.
  • Agumon sensed something was wrong, but Mimi and Palmon ran into the village before he could explain.
  • Palmon identified the village Digimon as Bukamon, and the Bukamon lifted Mimi and ran off with her.

Ch. 40Koromon's village

Tai and the others searched for Mimi after she was taken by Bukamon, but Zhou Zhu realized she was probably bathing and stopped Tai from barging in. Sora confirmed Mimi was safe, and the group debated which Digimon could join the bath before Zhou Zhu explained how to distinguish male and female Digimon.

  • Palmon and the others searched Koromon's village for Mimi after Bukamon carried her off.
  • The children followed Mimi's scream into a house and found her hat, bag, Digivice, and clothes.
  • Zhou Zhu stopped Tai from rushing behind a curtain and reasoned that Mimi was likely taking a bath.
  • Sora checked the bathroom and found Mimi relaxing in the bath, then reported that she was safe.
  • Sora and Biyomon prepared to bathe, while Sora and Izzy refused to let Tentomon join them.
  • Zhou Zhu told Izzy that Digimon's sexes could be distinguished by appearance, though the differences were less obvious at the Rookie level.
