Background / History

Zheng Fan’s parents were among Buzhou’s strongest couples, but both died after encountering a Beast King Procession. Believing they had returned to reincarnation, he insisted on mourning them at the battlefield. He began carrying supplies and delivering messages at seven, then helped handle corpses around ten. Repeatedly seeing familiar people die changed his understanding of death 11.

At twelve, his Master Realm cultivation made him the strongest member of a rear-line base. Buzhou required its strongest and highest-ranking members to cover an evacuation, so Zheng Fan remained behind with Xiaoxiao. Her death left him emotionally devastated and burdened by guilt 1 11.

Buzhou’s elders sent him to China at fourteen to help him recover. An elder told him that Xiaoxiao held a Harvard degree, giving him a reason to study toward admission there. He struggled especially with mathematics and economics: memorizing a textbook could not replace understanding it. By his arrival in the Digimon World, he had finished his college entrance examinations 11.

At Xiangyang High School, Priest James trapped him in a simplified Nine Heavens and Ten Earths Sealing Magic Array. An old man tore the array open and cast a dark banishment spell; the spatial rupture amplified the spell into one-way teleportation. Zheng Fan escaped the seal but was exiled to the Digimon World, whose coordinates were unknown to Buzhou, the Light Domain, and the Dark Domain 1 2 47.

Appearance

• Usual build: A somewhat lean teenager with handsome, delicate features. Buzhou’s disregard for appearances and his efforts to restrain himself on Earth made him increasingly ordinary-looking 24 25.
• Expanded physique: While trying to save the falling Greymon, his body grew to more than three times its original size, with muscles swelling throughout his frame 24.
• Facial distortion under exertion: The accompanying expansion of his facial muscles frightened Tai, who saw his contorted face through binoculars 25.

Personality

Zheng Fan is curious and adaptable, but his caution can give way to dangerous experimentation. He initially refuses to absorb unfamiliar data energy, then accepts Andromon’s modifications and eventually attempts complete bodily conversion. His near-fatal organ transformation teaches him to examine his own mistakes rather than assume an enemy caused them 2 7 18.

His sense of obligation centers on repaying kindness rather than dividing people into “light” and “evil.” He promises Centarumon assistance even without the Buzhou Blood Oath compelling him, and finds killing purely for its own sake repulsive. When Lost Satanmon questions his opposition, Zheng Fan answers that he is fighting because the other side attacked first 6 50.

Despite childhood battlefield service, he is not an experienced combat veteran. His familiarity with Leomon’s honorable fighting habits leaves him vulnerable when the controlled Leomon attacks unexpectedly. He also struggles to strike his friend seriously, even while retreating under attack 22.

Xiaoxiao’s death remains his deepest emotional wound. Toy Town lets him briefly abandon fighting, cultivation, and examinations to enjoy an ordinary adolescence. Later, Xiao’s emergence from the sword he forged with Xiaoxiao overwhelms him with laughter and tears 11 47.
