Cosmology

Multiple Digimon Worlds

“Digimon World” does not refer to a single uniform realm. Separate worlds have different structures, rulers, and evolutionary traditions 185 203 232.

World or Setting Documented Characteristics
First Digimon World A complete small universe 185.
Third Digimon World A fragment of a universe 185.
Sixth Digimon World A shattered space 185.
Taiki’s Digimon World A fragmented, war-torn world whose former knight-order guardians became DigiCores to seek its salvation 175 177.
World containing Lucemon’s prison Rebuilt as a sphere after the Ten Warriors’ battle with Lucemon; its evolutionary rules sustain his imprisonment at the core 203.
World Tree-governed world Its order is controlled by the World Tree, also called Yggdrasill 210 232.
Gallantmon’s home world Maintained by three great dragons and threatened by three opposing demon dragons 232.
  • Thomas’s genetic testing establishes that Takuya and his companions come from another world, rather than another historical period 206.
  • Changes in a Digimon World can affect its neighboring Human World. Huanglongmon describes a feedback loop in which upheaval accelerated human technological development, which then caused further disturbances in the Digimon World 177.
  • Zheng Fan encounters more than a hundred barrier layers while attempting entry. After crossing them, he is expelled into a data-filled void containing six orbiting worlds 19.

Physical Structure

  • Data energy and information power: These share an origin but are not interchangeable. Terrain does not ordinarily function as an energy supply for Digimon 46.
  • Digimon-created environments: A landscape can be formed by a Digimon rather than by ordinary information power; Mastermon identifies the cavern beyond the wall of flames as such an environment 46.
  • World capacity: The reborn world has limited capacity. Its rapid postwar flourishing is followed by a severe decline in powerful Digimon 272.

Geography and Settlements

Locations belong to different Digimon Worlds or periods and are not established as parts of one continuous map.

Location Significance
File Island Regarded as Digimon’s birthplace and formerly their most sacred place. It once contained the entire world’s only Village of Beginnings 13 33.
Village of Beginnings A birthplace for Digi-Eggs and a rebirth destination for slain File Island Digimon 3 13.
Infinite Mountain Its summit formerly housed the Gate used to send In-Training Digimon to their destinations. Darkness seized the Gate during the invasion 13.
Andromon’s Factory A center for mechanical modification and research into data-driven evolution 6 7.
Toy Town Home to Monzaemon, identified by Ogremon as one of File Island’s strongest Digimon 3.
Cardmaster Twister’s settlement A populated town protected from Black Gears by a Barrier 33.
Dragon Kingdom / Dragon Waterfall Site of imprisoned Digimon, a dam destroyed during their rescue, and Huanglongmon’s contest to choose a new king 177.
Western Forest Territory under Mercurymon’s control; Yuto stresses that Marcus’s knowledge of the world initially extends little beyond it 197.
Holy City A settlement carried on Golgomon’s back. Baromon uses its festival to announce war against humanity 197.
World Mountain A sacred location where Mercurymon and others reached Mega; the World Tree’s palace stands there 221 223.
Deep-sea kingdom Separated from the land after Dagomon severed the World Tree’s roots and established his rule over the ocean 209.
Jurassic Forest Protected by a Greymon whose disappearance becomes a clue in the search for Tai’s Agumon 250.
Mineral Town and Stardew Valley Connected by Trailmon; Stardew Valley lies half an hour by train from Mineral Town 250.

World Will and Governance

The World’s Consciousness

  • Very few Digimon can sense the world’s consciousness. Azulongmon describes its communications as fair and peaceful 66.
  • The world seeks to preserve its laws and raise a new generation capable of sustaining them. Zheng Fan agrees that eliminating invaders alone cannot secure a world whose laws remain incomplete 66.
  • Zheng Fan’s agreement with the world is connected to his teaching of Six Paths Breakthrough to the Chosen Children 55.
  • Zheng Fan states that the world can directly control the Night Dawn Sword. Azulongmon subsequently explains that a previous agreement prevents the world from contacting the weapon 66.
  • During Angewomon’s confrontation with Myotismon, Myotismon identifies her as the world’s will rather than Gatomon. Angemon’s behavior also suggests its influence 164.
  • In the Ancient World, Kari represents the world’s will, while Ancestor Angemon’s Digivice-making faction represents a separate ancient Digimon will. Their alliance against darkness does not eliminate their disagreements 254.

Governing Powers

Power Function or Position
World Tree / Yggdrasill Controls order in its world and communicates through its roots 228 232.
Royal Knights Safeguard order; each has reached the limit of Digimon evolution and seeks advancement beyond Mega 218.
Huanglongmon Governs authority in Gallantmon’s home world 232.
Holydramon Governs life in Gallantmon’s home world 232.
Azulongmon Governs order in Gallantmon’s home world; his fate is closely bound to the world’s condition 232 275.
Twelve Olympians Part of the foundation of a Digimon World. Damage to that world can harm gods whose Mega forms depend on its gifts 206.

Evolution and Rebirth

Evolutionary Laws

The world recognizes evolutionary paths and records inheritable abilities. Ancient Digimon pioneer new forms of evolution, while first-generation Digimon modify their own data in ways the world accepts 11 13 154.

Stage or Transition Documented Mechanism
Digi-Egg → In-Training Digimon hatch from Digi-Eggs; young Digimon depend on guardians before developing their own possibilities 32 213.
Rookie → Champion Primarily increases energy and strengthens the Digicore, alongside changes in form 57 142.
Champion → Ultimate Transforms the Digicore. Certain abilities require the evolved Digimon to understand that core 57 142.
Mega Described as the final standard evolutionary form, though higher advancement remains possible 218.
Beyond Mega Pursued by the Royal Knights; Ancestor Angemon also surpassed Mega but died because he could not control his power 155 218.
  • Heart and data: Data guides evolution’s direction; the heart creates the possibility and seeks a path toward it 6.
  • Digicore processing: Ordinarily, accumulated data energy must be converted by the Digicore. Metal Empire techniques can substitute for that process to accelerate evolution 7.
  • Inherited abilities: Once the world recognizes a genuine new special move, later Digimon of that kind automatically learn it through evolution 154.
  • Limits of inheritance: Gabumon’s Garuru Crystal Sword does not make him a first-generation Digimon because its strength depends on personal contemplation of the Night Dawn Sword, not a universally inheritable technique 159.
  • Multiple paths: Digimon can accumulate energy and evolve without the repeated limit-breaking demanded of cultivators, yet retain countless possible evolutionary directions 278.

Forms of Evolution

Method Applications and Limits
Divinely granted evolution Occurs instantly through the world’s blessing, but requires adjustment afterward 36.
Adaptive evolution Adjusts the body before transformation, giving immediate control once complete; the process takes longer 36.
Mechanical modification Directs weak Digimon toward particular evolutions when blueprints and sufficient energy are available 6.
DigiFusion Can combine two Champions into a new Digimon and potentially produce an Ultimate. Early data contamination could make fusion permanent, even beyond death 227.
Spirit Evolution Uses power left behind by ancient warriors who surrendered their existence 262.
Armor Digivolution Grants powerful armor and greater strength without constituting an actual evolutionary advancement 262.
  • Both divinely granted and adaptive evolution are protected by the world’s blessing and cannot be interrupted by attacks 36.
  • Calumon embodies the Light of Evolution. In his birth world, he can grant evolution or withdraw that power to return Digimon to In-Training; that authority does not automatically extend to other worlds 206.
  • Digisoul is identified as energy from the Digimon World capable of affecting it. Chika interprets its effects as the world hearing and granting heartfelt wishes 198.

Death and Reincarnation

  • File Island Digimon normally dissolve into data when killed and become Digi-Eggs in the Village of Beginnings 3.
  • Destroying a Digimon’s outer body can erase the patterns on its Digicore and produce a pure Digi-Egg. Shattering the Digicore itself permanently removes it from the world 172.
  • Beelzemon’s absorption of both data and Digicores prevents his victims from returning as Digi-Eggs 32.
  • Kurata’s specialized weapons can kill Digimon without allowing reincarnation 195.
  • Marcus’s Digisoul can cause defeated Digimon to become Digi-Eggs immediately, allowing them to hatch again soon afterward 263.

Inhabitants and Society

Classification

From Champion onward, Digimon are classified into ten categories 11.

Category Defining Association
Nature Spirits Free Digimon
Deep Savers Sea-dwelling Digimon
Nightmare Soldiers Virus-type Digimon
Wind Guardians Flying Digimon
Metal Empire Mechanically modified Digimon
Virus Busters Vaccine-type Digimon
Jungle Troopers Forest-dwelling Digimon
Dragon’s Roar Dragon Digimon
Dark Area Digimon with dark attributes
Unknown Domain An undiscovered category believed to exist

All category descriptions are given in Leomon’s explanation 11.

Social Organization

  • Strength hierarchy: The world has no clearly defined class system, but differences in strength create its greatest social divide 186.
  • Young tribes: In-Training Digimon commonly live in groups protected by Rookie “parents.” Mixed tribes can combine different abilities to resist stronger opponents 213.
  • Names: Most Digimon use their species designation as a name. Ancient Digimon who forge new paths gain the privilege of naming themselves 155 211.
  • Virus-type prejudice: Vaccine-types are popular, while Virus-types are feared. Elderlymon explains that the three attributes were originally equal, when ordinary death still permitted rebirth 3 32.
  • Emotional vulnerability: Digimon are less resistant to negative emotions than humans, helping explain their susceptibility to darkness 48.
  • Subsistence: Digimon do not need to eat, so confinement behind Cardmaster Twister’s Barrier does not create a food crisis 33.
  • Military organization: Tai observes that the world has never had a true army; Digimon can summon large groups of their own kind without formal command structures 159.

Travel and Access

Method Documented Use or Limitation
Infinite Mountain’s Gate Historically distributed In-Training Digimon from the Village of Beginnings to their destinations 13.
Traversing Technique Zheng Fan crosses the layered world barrier, suffering severe pressure, repulsion, and injury 19.
Space Passages Connect Human and Digimon Worlds. One passage measures roughly two meters on the human side but over two hundred meters on the Digimon side 89.
Computer gates Izzy opens a gate using Tai’s upgraded computer; later travel requires finding functioning computers and an available exit 258 263.
Digimon-created passages RizeGreymon can open passages and adjust travelers’ landing positions 202.
Omnimon’s transport Limited by his remaining power; he cannot safely send Taiki, Akari, and Zenjiro together 175.
Trailmon network Carries weaker travelers across the prosperous region around the Village of Beginnings and maintains an information network 250.
  • Zheng Fan converts himself into a complete data body before attempting his return through the world barrier 18 19.
  • Digimon below Champion generally rely on Trailmon to explore the wider world. Trailmon themselves range from Champion to Mega 250.
  • During the war with humanity, Space Passages restrict troop movement because allowing too many invaders through would endanger the Digimon World 215.

History

Origins and the Darkness Invasion

Ancestor Angemon is described as the first Digimon. His early attempts at evolution included surpassing Mega and dying from an inability to control his power, followed by later rebirths and further research 155.

File Island originally held the only Village of Beginnings. Young Digimon were sent through the Gate atop Infinite Mountain, making the island a central sacred site. During the Darkness Invasion, it suffered the fiercest fighting and lost the Gate to the enemy 13.

The world’s will and Ancestor Angemon’s faction cooperated against darkness despite conflicting aims. Leomon’s Digivice-granted Mega evolution represented the ancient Digimon will; MetalEtemon, contracted to the world’s will, ultimately killed him 254.

Histories of Other Digimon Worlds

In Taiki’s world, KingAngemon helped repel otherworldly invaders but imposed increasingly brutal policies to prepare for their return. He became TyrantAngemon, then fused with part of an invader’s body and became Bagramon. Although he failed to obtain X-Evolution, he gained a precursor to Fusion evolution 177.

The battle between Zheng Fan, Shoutmon X7, and Emperor Bagramon later shattered the surrounding space. This fulfilled Bagramon’s objective because that space was his prison 185.

In the world described by Wisemon’s records, the Ten Warriors’ decisive battle with Lucemon shattered the original world. Survivors rebuilt it as a sphere and bound Lucemon at its core using evolutionary rules. Maintaining that prison altered evolution’s original meaning, and the term “Mega” was eventually forgotten 203.

Under the World Tree, another Digimon World initially prospered. Dagomon’s rise severed the ocean from the land and created a brutal deep-sea kingdom. The ensuing campaign turned toward victory after Hankmon infiltrated the sea, killed MetalSeadramon, and severed Dagomon’s tentacles 209.

War with Humanity and Reconstruction

Human incursions intensified hostility between the worlds. Gate English remained behind to make amends after his expedition’s other members provoked Digimon and fled. Later, the Holy City declared war on humanity, and the conflict escalated into an all-out invasion 212 197 215.

Thomas attempted to give Earth a respite by connecting two Digimon Worlds and turning them against each other. He sacrificed himself to a Super Plane Bomb’s black hole inside the hollowed-out world containing Lucemon’s prison 206.

The crisis culminated in a Digimon World approaching Earth. Humanity’s united data energy pushed it away, while Susanoomon defeated Heaven-Swallowing Demon Dragonmon and sacrificed himself to contain the world’s immense energy in a Digi-Egg. Zheng Fan helped reposition and connect worlds, and the Three Great Angels rebuilt the Digimon World using Wisemon’s notes 236.

The Reborn World

Surviving Digimon carried over into the new world, and slain Digimon were soon reborn. This rapid recovery exceeded the world’s limited capacity: Megas ceased appearing, Ultimates almost vanished, and Champions fell to one-third of their former number. The decline stopped after Azulongmon took the Chosen Children’s Crests 272.

Ken Ichijouji’s Dark Towers subsequently spread across the world, suppressing evolution. The Chosen Children fought to dismantle them and free controlled Digimon, while reconstruction efforts continued 248 249 266.

BlackWarGreymon, formed from one hundred Dark Towers, damaged the world through his very movements. Zheng Fan also accused Azulongmon of deliberately weakening the world to delay dissolving into the Dao. Azulongmon warned that his dissolution could expand the world into a collision with the Human World and asked Zheng Fan to protect the Holy Stones 275.
