Background / History

Mastermon evolved under the guidance of the Gate of the Digimon World and was named for overseeing it. He guarded the summit of Infinite Mountain and held File Island's highest level of authority, although he was not its ruler. Guarding the Gate, which connected to countless worlds, also exposed him to knowledge from those worlds; he later forgot much of it 31 42 47 49.

After the great battle at Infinite Mountain, the Gate was taken away. Believing he could no longer contribute to future battles, Mastermon lost heart and surrendered the power the Gate had supplied for his evolution. That power supported research into the Digivice, and his sacrifice caused him to devolve into Elderlymon. Genai later confirmed his involvement in creating the children's Digivices 31 49.

As Elderlymon, he became File Island's most respected elder. He taught Zheng Fan and Leomon about Ancient and First-Generation Digimon, and later searched for Kangarumon after a Black Gear transformed Dumplingmon into a killer 13 29.

Appearance

  • Mastermon: A majestic, handsome middle-aged humanoid with a robust physique, replacing Elderlymon's sickly appearance 31 41.
  • Elderlymon: An old-man form, described as having remained at Champion level for a very long time 29 42.
  • Sunshine Flame: His entire body radiates dazzling golden light while using this technique 50.

Personality

Mastermon is protective and compassionate. He risks his life to save Mimi, worries about sea-dwelling Digimon endangered by released darkness, and regards the Chosen Children as the Digimon World's hope. That protectiveness can interfere with his judgment: during the Lost Satanmon battle, his alarm over Tai and Joe's departure distracts him until Zheng Fan rebukes him 31 44 50.

Despite being Vaccine-type, he rejects blanket prejudice against Virus-type Digimon. He judges Kangarumon's choices rather than condemning his new attribute, allowing him to leave while urging him to think carefully before killing 32.

He also has a mischievous and proud streak. He tricks Mimi into striking an Oushang Fruit with her forehead, restraining Palmon so she cannot warn her. After recovering his power, he anticipates returning triumphantly to Infinite Mountain; he is also sensitive to remarks that seem to belittle the Digimon World 41 42 47.

Abilities & Skills

Ancient Digimon Strength

  • Remains Ultimate-level, despite possessing strength on par with a Mega 31.
  • Could wield power beyond an ordinary Mega when before the Gate of the Digimon World; this advantage is explicitly location-dependent 31.
  • Blocks Cactismon's flying spikes with one hand while also protecting Sukamon 31.

Elemental Attacks

  • Summons lightning, flames, and ice arrows with a wave of his hand 32.
  • Shatters Kangarumon's borrowed War Bearmon body with lightning 31.
  • Uses smaller elemental attacks to fill gaps in Cactismon's area attack. These attacks can interfere with one another: a fireball breaks ice formed by an earlier ice arrow 32.

Sunshine Flame

  • Emits brilliant golden light that feels warm to his companions but ignites Black Gears 50.
  • Burning gears fuel golden fireballs, spreading the attack to additional gears 50.
  • Lost Satanmon can break the technique with his scythe 50.

Barriers and Protective Halo

  • Forms a hand seal to erect a barrier around Cardmaster Twister's teleportation formation, containing the released dark power 43.
  • Requires sustained effort to stabilize that barrier; surrounding it with earthen walls reduces the strain 43.
  • Creates a spreading halo that destroys Black Gears feeding Lost Satanmon. Initially, fewer than one in a thousand pass through 50.
  • Strengthening the halo reduces his aura by one fifth and lowers the surviving gears to fewer than one in ten thousand. Distraction weakens its effectiveness 50.

Perception and Heart-Affecting Power

  • Detects Kangarumon's changing attribute and senses dark auras and changes in their intensity 32 43 46.
  • Has a power that touches the heart, which T.K. asks him to use to cheer up Izzy. Mastermon avoids treating it as something to use casually 48.
  • His compelling gaze makes Lost Satanmon feel unable to lie when questioned about his leaders; Lost Satanmon remains silent instead 50.
  • His senses are not infallible: he initially mistakes the Void's aura for the dark power encountered outside the cavern 47.

Flight, Knowledge, and Data Interface

  • Can fly, though he chooses to slow his descent by punching a shaft wall because flight requires more effort 46.
  • Knows the history of Digimon attributes and explains how Beelzemon's consumption of Digicores helped make Virus-types feared 32.
  • Retains fragments of knowledge acquired from worlds connected through the Gate 47.
  • Can provide his vision to Izzy's laptop after Zheng Fan connects them, enabling patrol-route mapping 48.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Cardmaster Twister's teleportation card — Entrusted to him before the cavern investigation as a precaution following Twister's earlier corruption 46.
  • Ancestor Angemon's Bitcoins — Scattered across the marked danger zone to encourage happiness and prevent sorrow from triggering another disaster. The coins dissolve into the area; Mastermon is visibly unhappy about having to use them 47.

Relationships

  • Zheng Fan — Fellow leader and combat partner. They investigate the darkness together and cooperate against Lost Satanmon, despite disagreements over tactics and the children's safety 42 43 46 49 50.
  • Mimi Tachikawa — Saves her from Kangarumon; her Digivice restores his Mastermon form. She admires his looks, strength, and knowledge, but also becomes the target of his fruit prank 31 41.
  • Palmon / Cactismon — Cooperates with him against Kangarumon. He later restrains Palmon to prevent her from warning Mimi about his prank 31 32 41.
  • Kangarumon — Enemy who cracks his Digicore, then declares an intention to return and challenge him. Mastermon lets him leave after his attribute changes to Virus-type 31 32.
  • Cardmaster Twister — Ally in containing and investigating dark power. Mastermon remains wary after Twister's corruption and later informs the children of his death 43 46 47.
  • Izzy Izumi — Supports his reconnaissance through a laptop connection and warns him that killing patrol Digimon could strengthen Lost Satanmon 48 49.
  • Genai — Recognizes Mastermon and verifies his former guardianship of Infinite Mountain and contribution to the Digivices 49.
  • Lost Satanmon — Opponent at Infinite Mountain. Mastermon questions him about the dark Digimon's origins and leaders, then uses his halo to obstruct his supply of Black Gears 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Restoration and Kangarumon's Escape

  • As Elderlymon, intercepts Spear of Faith to save Mimi, suffering a cracked Digicore 31.
  • Mimi's Digivice restores him as Mastermon while evolving Palmon into Cactismon. His lightning destroys Kangarumon's War Bearmon shell 31.
  • Recognizes Kangarumon's transition to Virus-type and allows him to depart, asking him to reconsider future killings 32.

Graveyard Mound and the Cavern

  • Joins Zheng Fan in leading the reunited group toward Infinite Mountain 42.
  • Helps contain the dark power released when MegaKuwagamon destroys a stone platform at Graveyard Mound 43.
  • Investigates the weakened darkness with Zheng Fan and Cardmaster Twister, discovering a cavern filled with deadly flames 46.
  • His observation about the cost of random teleportation prompts Zheng Fan to recognize that the destroyed forest was a sacrifice used to force dark power through the flames 47.
  • Pulls Zheng Fan out of the cavern and later scatters Ancestor Angemon's Bitcoins to protect the site from another emotion-triggered disaster 47.

Assault on Infinite Mountain

  • Warns that Digimon deaths anywhere on File Island may fuel Lost Satanmon's next digivolution, ruling out a plan to eliminate the Factory patrols 49.
  • Clears Black Gears alongside Zheng Fan, then hears Lost Satanmon's account of the dark Digimon coming from another Digimon World 49 50.
  • Uses his halo to destroy nearly all incoming gears, but cannot entirely prevent Lost Satanmon from growing stronger 50.
  • Attempts to stop Tai and Joe from leaving to confront Leomon. Zheng Fan's rebuke makes him recognize that their own task is to maintain the fight 50.
