Background / History
Leomon retains memories from a previous life. His relentless pursuit of strength once led him to become a Mega-level, Virus-type Mad Leomon. He recalled wanting to join the Royal Knights after regaining his senses, but his damaged body could not survive. He suspected that he had crossed the Knights, rather than remembering his attacker with certainty 3.
In his current life, Leomon and Ogremon hatched on the same day and were friends as In-Training Digimon. Their relationship changed after Leomon became a popular Vaccine-type and Ogremon became a feared Virus-type. Ogremon began seeking to defeat him, turning their friendship into a rivalry 3.
Leomon traveled around File Island challenging powerful opponents and hoped eventually to evolve again and defeat Andromon. He also wanted to leave the island. His long protection of Biyomon village served that ambition: he hoped to earn the trust of Digimon who might evolve into Birdramon or Airdramon and fly him away 2 3 10 11.
Appearance
Leomon has a lion’s head and a muscular human-shaped body. He is only slightly taller than an ordinary person, but initially has roughly twice Zheng Fan’s bulk 2.
- Champion form: His body visibly shrinks when he loses large amounts of data energy 5.
- SaberLeomon form: Stands four meters tall and wears golden armor with a mask exposing only his eyes 15.
- Lion-head armor: SaberLeomon’s shoulders, belt, and knee guards carry five roaring lion heads with protruding fangs. These data-formed features can threaten opponents at close range 15.
- Beneath the armor: Bronze skin becomes visible when SaberLeomon’s breastplate is shattered 16.
Personality
Leomon is intensely competitive and proud of his strength. He calls himself the strongest Champion-level Digimon and eagerly challenges Zheng Fan almost immediately after meeting him. His pride can make cooperation difficult: while defending the Village of Beginnings, he refuses assistance because Ogremon is among those offering it 2 3.
His preference for direct combat is also a training discipline. Zheng Fan recognizes that Leomon continues pressing straight ahead against Kuwagamon to hone his fundamentals, even when Ogremon’s mobile tactics are more effective against a flying enemy. Nevertheless, his familiar close-combat routines eventually become predictable to Zheng Fan 3 7.
Leomon’s kindness is genuine but not entirely without self-interest. He helps weaker Digimon and repairs the Biyomon homes damaged during his duel, yet deliberately cultivates a friendly reputation to improve his chances of leaving File Island. He is distressed when Toy Town’s inhabitants react to him with fear 3 4 10.
His courage does not make him immune to fear. Contemplating the strength of darkness nearly causes him to devolve, and he admits that witnessing thousands of his own kind die might frighten him more than it frightened the surviving Sukamon. Later, Zheng Fan’s accounts of Buzhou and the Darkness Invasion shape a harsher sense of duty: Leomon is willing to bear the regret of killing a controlled friend rather than leave that friend enslaved and harming others 5 10 27.
Abilities & Skills
Beast King Fist and Variants
Beast King Fist is an innate energy attack Leomon has known since evolving into his Champion form 2.
- Beast King Fist: Used with blade strikes to destroy Kuwagamon; effective against Numemon despite their resistance to physical attacks 3 4.
- Hundred Beasts Fist: Launches a dense barrage of enormous lion heads. Although numerous, its attacks are described as single-target rather than area-covering 7 16.
- Charge-Up, Beast King Fist: Requires preparation while Leomon maintains pressure on his opponent. Its demonstrated cost includes destroying his own fists 7 8.
- Cold vulnerability: Yukidarumon’s Absolute Zero Punch freezes his Champion-level Beast King Fists 27.
Blade Combat and Lion King Maru
Leomon combines saber strikes with punches, blocks, and hand changes. Repeated sparring with Zheng Fan improves his weapon technique, and Zheng Fan teaches him a set of saber techniques 2 9.
- Lion King Maru: Develops from a supplementary attack into a formidable technique within the foot of space directly before him 9.
- Precision application: Cuts out Black King Sukamon’s exposed eye while the enemy is trapped in ice 9.
- Limit: His blade cannot overpower Kuwagamon’s pincers in a direct clash, and his repeated routines allow Zheng Fan to anticipate his moves 3 7.
Shatter Kick
A powerful leaping kick used in both sparring and battle 7 9.
- Strikes the flat of the Night Dawn Sword rather than risking its cutting edge 7.
- Serves as an approach against Black King Sukamon, whose deformable body negates the impact itself 9.
Lion King’s Roar
SaberLeomon’s roar carries a mental attack capable of scattering Infinite Mountain’s gathered faith energy 15.
- Counters Divine Spirit’s mental intrusion and restores Elderlymon’s clarity when the deity nearly draws him out of the protective barrier 15.
- Provides defensive protection rather than a way to injure Divine Spirit; repeatedly breaking its mental attacks does not weaken the deity 16.
Lion King’s Volley
An evolved version of Hundred Beasts Fist, fired through the five lion heads on SaberLeomon’s armor 16.
- Releases countless spectral lion heads across a substantial area.
- Each projectile is approximately as large as Leomon’s former head 16.
Endurance and Data-Based Body
Andromon’s full-body enhancements give Leomon greater stamina than Zheng Fan during their Factory sparring 7.
- Andromon’s later repair method enables repeated all-out training, including fights that leave Leomon unable to move 8.
- Raw strength does not negate rank-based abilities: Black King Sukamon’s Ultimate-level Digicore suppression renders him unable to fight 9.
- Expending his origin while trying to free Yukidarumon leaves him needing a lengthy recovery; Zheng Fan cannot directly replace what he has lost 28.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Male Soul Blade — Also called Man Soul in the text. Developed from Leomon’s core data when he evolved from Liollmon; it is identified as his personal weapon and cannot be used by someone else 5.
- SaberLeomon’s golden armor — Data-formed armor whose five lion heads support close-range threats and Lion King’s Volley. Its breastplate is broken during the battle with Devimon 15 16.
- Universal Tools — Supplied by Andromon for Leomon and Zheng Fan’s sewer journey toward Toy Town 8.
Relationships
- Zheng Fan — Friend, traveling companion, and regular sparring partner. Leomon introduces him to File Island, while Zheng Fan teaches him saber techniques and helps restore his confidence 2 5 8 9.
- Ogremon — Childhood friend turned rival. Their private duel ends with Ogremon leaving dejected to train 3 4.
- Biyomon villagers — Digimon he protects and hopes to win over. He helps rebuild their homes after his impulsive challenge damages the village 2 3 11.
- Centarumon — Good friend whose ruins Leomon helps defend. Centarumon refuses him entry on other occasions, calls him illiterate, and later helps prevent his devolution 4 5.
- Andromon — An opponent Leomon hopes to surpass and the researcher who strengthens his body to its Champion limits 2 7.
- Unimon — Initially obstructs his climb up Infinite Mountain; later fights beside SaberLeomon and is entrusted with evacuating him after his injury 12 16.
- Elderlymon / Mastermon — Rebukes his recklessness and accompanies the Infinite Mountain expedition. SaberLeomon protects Elderlymon from the deity’s mental influence 13 14 15.
- Matt — Ally during the effort to free Yukidarumon. They later run together during the group’s peaceful training period 27 41.
- Garurumon — Combat ally against Yukidarumon. Leomon accidentally hits him when Garurumon suddenly pins their opponent down 28.
- Yukidarumon — Friend controlled by a Black Gear. Leomon repeatedly holds back against him despite being capable of killing him 27.

Notable Quotes
“One day, I'll evolve again and defeat Andromon.” 2
“I should choose a name for myself. One that won't change, no matter how I evolve.” 15
“Besides, as his good friend, if I can't free Yukidarumon from the Black Gear's control, I might as well put him out of his misery.” 27
Trivia
- The novel explicitly identifies SaberLeomon as Ultimate-level, through Elderlymon’s congratulations after the evolution 15.
- Elderlymon uses Leomon’s learned swordsmanship as a hypothetical example of becoming a First-Generation Digimon: if Leomon incorporated it into his own data and gained the world’s recognition, future Leomon would inherit those techniques. This recognition is not shown occurring 13.
- In the Digimon World’s refuge, an evolution record depicts a Leomon gaining a non-humanoid body and the ability to fly. The scene appears during Zheng Fan’s discovery of cards recording Ancient Digimon evolutions, rather than establishing that his companion has gained flight 17.
