Background / History
Kurona and her younger twin, Nashiro, lost their biological father while young. Akihiro Kanou subsequently occupied the Yasuhisa estate and used its basement as a secret experimental facility. Unaware of his intentions, the sisters came to regard him as their father 26 42.
Both sought Kanou’s approval through academic achievement, aiming to take first and second place between them. Byakuya’s arrival threatened that goal, explaining why they were hostile toward him even before his shooting-range taunt 43 44.
Original-story fate recalled by Byakuya
The following events are explicitly recalled from the original story, rather than shown occurring to Kurona in the novel’s current timeline 44:
- Artificial ghoul transformation: Kanou used Rize Kamishiro’s kakuhou and kagune to turn both sisters into one-eyed ghouls.
- Defeat by Juuzou Suzuya: While protecting Kanou during the discovery of his laboratory, the twins fought Suzuya and were badly beaten. Nashiro suffered life-threatening injuries.
- Kanou’s abandonment: Kurona sought his help, but he ignored the dying Nashiro.
- Attempt to save Nashiro: Kurona absorbed her sister into her abdomen. Nashiro ultimately merged with her without retaining consciousness or vital signs.
Byakuya questions whether these events can still unfold after his rescue of Rize makes her unlikely to become Kanou’s experimental donor 12 44.
Appearance
Kurona closely resembles Nashiro, with delicate facial features and an almost identical height and build. Their contrasting hair and clothing make them easy to distinguish 20.
- Hair: Black, contrasting with Nashiro’s white hair 20.
- Clothing: Black dress at her introduction 20.
- Height and build: 160 centimeters tall, with a slender figure 20.
- Dominant hand: Left-handed; Nashiro shoots right-handed 21.
Personality
Kurona is reserved with strangers, though initially more approachable than Nashiro. The sisters largely keep to themselves and are usually inseparable. Her competitive streak becomes particularly pronounced when Byakuya surpasses them: she treats his taunt as a challenge and insists that he remember her name as his opponent 20 21 22.
Her ambition is tied to a need for paternal approval. She initially rejects Byakuya’s suggestion that she lacks affection, but later acknowledges that he may be right and explains why their rankings matter so much to her 42 43.
Kurona struggles to admit romantic feelings. She enjoys Byakuya’s compliments while protesting them, becomes jealous of his closeness with Hajime Iba, and repeatedly qualifies her admission that she might like him. She is also strongly self-critical when her mistake causes Nashiro to fail alongside her, but responds to encouragement and resolves to improve 30 31 32 33.
Abilities & Skills
Marksmanship
Kurona demonstrates strong handgun accuracy during Academy practice, hitting the eight-ring and earning the instructor’s praise alongside Nashiro 21.
- Uses her left hand to fire 21.
- Scores below Byakuya’s demonstrated ten-ring and nine-ring results 21.
- Performs worse on a subsequent attempt while trying to surpass him 21.
Quinque Combat and Teamwork
Kurona trains with Hiruko 1/76 and fights alongside Nashiro during the 24th Ward internship 27 28.
- Their coordination would have allowed them to defeat their first opponent if Kurona had maintained her focus 30.
- The sisters defeat two ghouls during the remainder of the first day’s training 31.
- On the following day, their performance ranks behind Byakuya and Suzuya but ahead of the other trainee pair 43.
- Limitation: Her preoccupation with Byakuya’s performance causes a dangerous lapse in concentration during their first exercise 29 30.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Hiruko 1/76 — A white dagger-type, B-rated Quinque used in practical training and issued for the internship 25 27.

- Amahane Byakuya — Classmate and initial rival who becomes her rescuer and romantic interest. Kurona allows him to use her first name and eventually confides in him about the sisters’ pursuit of their father’s approval 22 29 32 33 43.
- Akihiro Kanou — The man she calls “Father.” She seeks his praise without knowing that he regards the sisters as potential experimental subjects 26 43 44.
- Juuzou Suzuya — Fellow intern whom she distrusts over accusations of kitten torture. The narration states that he did not commit the alleged acts; Byakuya refuses to share her judgment 26 27 42.
- Kishou Arima — Leader of the Zero Squad supervising her internship. He kills the ghoul attacking her with Narukami as Byakuya carries her away 27 29.
- Ui Koori — Field-training supervisor who reprimands her for losing focus during combat 30.
