Background / History

Transmigration and System Activation

Byakuya remembers being crushed by a truck before awakening in Anteiku in the world of Tokyo Ghoul. He arrives with his own body and recognizes Rize Kamishiro from having watched the original story. His system supplies a legitimate Tokyo identity, fluent Japanese, and a background as an eighteen-year-old university student 1 5.

His assigned background makes him the sole member of his family in this world; it does not mean that his original parents died. The system also provides a house, a car, and considerable money 41.

Rize and His First Ghoul Battle

Byakuya confesses to Rize to complete a system choice worth 50 fusion points, despite knowing she is a dangerous ghoul. She agrees to try dating him while secretly intending to eat him. Their subsequent meetings at Anteiku provide further rewards through shared coffee, hand-holding, and interactions with other characters 1 2 6.

An alley encounter becomes his first demonstrated fight. He burns a B-rank ghoul, breaks off its weakened bikaku kagune with a crowbar, and uses the severed appendage to destroy its kakuhou. The victory earns five fusion points and convinces him that a Quinque would be a more convenient weapon 8 9.

He later knowingly permits Rize to bite his shoulder for a 100-point mission reward, advancing to Lv2. After the falling steel beams injure her, he returns to rescue her despite understanding that doing so interferes with Furuta Nimura’s plans 10 12.

CCG Training and Qualification

Seeking access to Quinques, Byakuya applies to the CCG and chooses the Ghoul Investigator Training School. He takes leave from Kamii University and intends to qualify early rather than complete the Academy’s normal two-year course 18 19.

His shooting and Quinque performances quickly distinguish him from his classmates. After learning that field trainees may temporarily carry Quinques, he volunteers for an early internship accompanying Kishou Arima’s Zero Squad into the 24th Ward 20 21 25 27.

During the internship, he partners with Juuzou Suzuya, rescues Kurona Yasuhisa, and earns praise for both combat and teammate protection. He finishes as the top-performing intern with an average score of 9.6, becomes a Second-Class Ghoul Investigator, and receives ownership of his training Quinque 28 29 30 48.

Protecting Rize and Opposing the Washuu Clan

Byakuya repeatedly promises to protect Rize and offers her refuge in his home. He also opposes her unrestricted hunting of humans and urges her to avoid attracting investigators or another ambush 35 40.

Although he already knows the Washuu Clan’s secrets from the original story, he allows Rize to reveal them herself and pretends to be shocked. Her disclosure gives him a plausible explanation for possessing that knowledge. He reaffirms his commitment to her and regards defeating the clan as necessary to prevent the world’s tragedies from continuing 46.

Rize subsequently moves into his house. During his post-internship leave, he attends Sen Takatsuki’s fan event with her and Ken Kaneki 48 49.

Appearance

Byakuya retains his original facial features after transmigrating, but his hair becomes considerably longer and takes on a Madara-inspired style 4.

  • Face: Handsome, with sharp brows, bright eyes, and a bold edge to his features 4.
  • Hair: Resembles “Red Night Obito’s” hairstyle without the long tail at the back; shorter than Madara’s hair 4.
  • Eyes: Normally black; become scarlet with tomoe when his Sharingan activates 4 7 10.

Personality

Byakuya is pragmatic about growing stronger, but does not invariably choose the largest system reward. He refuses to exploit Kaneki’s crush on Rize because he sympathizes with Kaneki’s difficult life, and avoids involvement with Tooru Mutsuki and Hidemasa Togakage when the potential trouble outweighs the reward. Conversely, he deliberately insults the Yasuhisa sisters for 50 points, then apologizes afterward 6 21 22 24.

He usually maintains an easygoing, composed manner, including when threatened by ghouls. His caution extends to concealing his unusual abilities and avoiding premature attention from the Washuu Clan. He nevertheless becomes forceful when promising to protect Rize and insists that he will honor his commitments 7 9 35 40 42.

His affection does not eliminate his boundaries. He openly admits that he likes Rize while remaining wary of her, refuses unrestricted feeding, and recognizes that her apparent romantic devotion often masks hunger or teasing. Reading is a genuine hobby rather than merely a way to earn rewards 3 19 40 41 48.

Abilities & Skills

Madara Fusion System

The system grants Byakuya abilities from Madara Uchiha and strengthens them through fusion points 1 10.

  • Choice missions: Offer different actions and rewards, such as confessing to Rize or choosing how to approach Kaneki 1 5 6.
  • Incidental rewards: Reading Takatsuki’s books, interacting with notable characters, and first using a Quinque can award points 3 4 5 25.
  • Combat rewards: Defeating a B-rank ghoul awards five fusion points 8 29 31 48.
  • Immediate improvement: Spending points strengthens him even before he crosses a level threshold 10.
  • Initial restriction: The System Mall is locked when the system activates 1.

Sharingan

His Sharingan initially has one tomoe in each eye and advances directly to three tomoe at Lv2 4 10.

  • Activation significantly enhances his vision and perception 4.
  • He can activate it with a thought 4.
  • A ghoul mistakes its scarlet appearance for kakugan, despite Byakuya smelling human 8.

Hashirama Cells and Chakra

Hashirama cells grant regeneration far beyond that of an ordinary human. Their chakra merges with the chakra supplied through Madara’s abilities 8 10.

  • Regeneration allows him to recover flesh eaten by Rize 10 13.
  • His cells upgrade from Lv1 to Lv2 alongside his fusion advancement 10.
  • His unusually strong physique and Hashirama cells are presented as the likely reason his flesh tastes exceptionally delicious to Rize 10 23.

Taijutsu and Weapon Handling

Madara’s inherited Taijutsu provides enhanced physical combat ability and kunai-handling skills 8 25.

  • Uses brute force to break a kagune already weakened by fire 8.
  • Treats a Quinque dagger as a kunai for both close combat and throwing 25.
  • Shatters a distant rock with a precise Hiruko 1/76 throw 25.
  • Demonstrates exceptional speed while engaging ghouls and rescuing Kurona 28 29.

Fire Release

Byakuya receives three C-rank fire techniques at Lv1 and three additional B-rank techniques at Lv2 1 10.

  • Great Fireball Technique — C-rank: Demonstrated against a B-rank ghoul; inflicts severe burns but fails to kill it outright because of its regeneration 8.
  • Phoenix Flower Jutsu — C-rank: Granted at system activation 1.
  • Dragon Fire Technique — C-rank: Granted at system activation 1.
  • Majestic Destroyer Flame — B-rank: Unlocked at Lv2 10.
  • Great Fire Annihilation — B-rank: Unlocked at Lv2 10.
  • Dust Concealment Technique — B-rank: Unlocked at Lv2 10.

Body Flicker Technique

His D-rank Body Flicker consumes chakra to perform short-range instantaneous movement 8.

  • Appears behind an approaching ghoul before it can react 8.
  • The basic D-rank version has limited movement distance 8.
  • He considers it an escape option when planning to let Rize bite him 10.

Marksmanship

Byakuya’s enhanced eyesight and observation make aiming a strength even without an active Sharingan 20.

  • Scores a nine-ring hit on his first handgun shot 20.
  • Follows with another nine and a ten, dispelling classmates’ suspicions that his first result was luck 21.
  • Initially requires instruction in firearm grip and stance despite his exceptional accuracy 20.

Ghoul Knowledge and Combat Judgment

His familiarity with the original story gives him knowledge of ghoul identities, organizations, and weaknesses that he often conceals 3 4 40 46.

  • Correctly identifies the 24th Ward’s labyrinth walls as kagune 27.
  • Targets kakuhou to incapacitate ghouls and coordinates a flanking attack with Suzuya 8 28 29.
  • Captures some ghouls during training while killing others he judges deserving of death 43.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Hiruko 1/76: A white, B-class Quinque dagger, heavier than an ordinary dagger. Initially loaned for training and fieldwork; becomes his property upon qualification as an investigator 24 25 27 48.
  • Crowbar: Improvised weapon used to fracture and sever his first opponent’s scorched kagune. He removes it from the scene to avoid leaving obvious evidence of his methods 8 9.
  • Severed bikaku kagune: Briefly used to destroy the same ghoul’s kakuhou, then discarded 8 9.
  • Training firearms: Practices with a Desert Eagle-like handgun, rifles, and sniper rifles; these are not established as personal possessions 20 21.
  • CCG work identification: Received upon becoming a Second-Class Ghoul Investigator 48.

Relationships

  • Rize Kamishiro — His first confession target, stated first love, and eventual housemate. He protects her despite her attempt to eat him. Their relationship remains explicitly ambiguous: Rize publicly calls him her boyfriend, but still views him as food, and Byakuya later reports having no girlfriend 1 10 13 41 48 50.
  • Ken Kaneki — Reading companion and friend through their shared interest in Sen Takatsuki. Byakuya avoids humiliating him over his crush on Rize and attends Takatsuki’s fan event with him 6 7 22 48.
  • Kurona Yasuhisa — Classmate and initial rival. After Byakuya rescues her, she becomes jealous of his closeness with Hajime and admits that she may have a crush on him 21 22 29 32 33.
  • Nashiro Yasuhisa — Classmate and Kurona’s twin sister. Initially hostile over his provocation, she later seeks to know him better before supporting Kurona’s interest in him 21 22 33 41.
  • Juuzou Suzuya — Internship partner. Byakuya approaches him despite his isolation, coordinates effectively with him in combat, and voices belief in his innocence over the cat killings 26 28 29 42.
  • Hajime Iba — Zero Squad member whom Byakuya quickly befriends. Their frequent conversations provoke Kurona’s jealousy until Byakuya explains that Hajime is a boy 28 30 32.
  • Kishou Arima and Ui Koori — Internship supervisors. They praise his performance, with Ui specifically recognizing his ability to both eliminate ghouls and rescue teammates 27 30 48.
  • Eto / Sen Takatsuki — An author whose works genuinely interest him. He knows her identity as the One-Eyed Owl and suspects her early encounter with him was arranged because of Rize 3 4 49.
  • Furuta Nimura — A university acquaintance whose plans Byakuya disrupts by rescuing Rize. Byakuya knows more about Furuta’s intentions than he admits aloud 5 12 40.
  • Touka Kirishima and Yoriko Kosaka — Touka observes his unusual closeness with Rize. Yoriko later questions him about his relationship status on Touka’s presumed behalf, although Touka denies having feelings for him 15 38 50.
