Background / History

Nashiro and Kurona lost their biological father at a young age. Akihiro Kanou subsequently took over the Yasuhisa estate and used its basement as a secret experimental facility. Unaware of his intentions, the twins came to regard him as their father and called him “Dad” 26 42.

The sisters sought first and second place at the Academy to earn Kanou’s approval and praise. Byakuya’s arrival threatened that goal, explaining their hostility toward him even before he openly mocked their shooting performance 43 44.

Original-story fate

The following events are recalled by Byakuya, not depicted as Nashiro’s current fate. In the original story, Kanou deceived the twins into undergoing artificial half-ghoul experiments, using Rize Kamishiro’s kakuhou and kagune to turn them into one-eyed ghouls 44.

While protecting Kanou during the discovery of his underground laboratory, the sisters fought Juuzou Suzuya and were defeated. Nashiro was gravely wounded, but Kanou refused to help her. Kurona absorbed Nashiro into her abdomen in an attempt to preserve her life; Nashiro ultimately merged completely with her sister, losing consciousness and vital signs 44.

Byakuya’s rescue of Rize makes her availability as an experimental donor unlikely, leaving Kanou’s next actions uncertain 12 44.

Appearance

Nashiro closely resembles Kurona, with their contrasting coloring providing the clearest distinction 20.

• Build: Slender, with nearly the same height and figure as her sister 20.

Personality

Nashiro is introverted and shy around strangers. When Byakuya first greets her, she briefly glances at him before avoiding eye contact. Her expression often remains neutral even when she acknowledges his abilities 20 25.

She is competitive but willing to recognize genuine skill. Although angered by Byakuya’s taunts, she later admits that his first performance with a Quinque is impressive 21 25.

Her concern for Kurona outweighs her desire to succeed. After their failed combat exercise, she reassures her sister that being safe matters more than passing. She notices Kurona’s changing behavior around Byakuya, initially accepts her explanations, and later promises to support her feelings while deciding to evaluate him herself 30 31 33.

Academy Rivalry

Nashiro and Kurona are already among their class’s top students when Byakuya joins. After failing to surpass his shooting scores, they take his “If you suck, practice more” taunt as a challenge. His lunchtime apology reduces the immediate tension without ending their rivalry 19 21 22.

Early Field Training

The twins join Byakuya in applying for early field training and complete three days of preparatory instruction before accompanying Zero Squad underground. Their first paired exercise fails after Kurona becomes distracted, but they continue training and defeat further ghouls together 26 27 29 30 31.

Growing Familiarity with Byakuya

After Kurona admits that she may like Byakuya, Nashiro resolves to know him better before trusting him with her sister. On a later subway journey, she asks him to call her Nashiro and directly questions him about Kurona 33 41.

Exhausted after another training session, both sisters fall asleep against Byakuya’s shoulders. Nashiro realizes what happened upon waking and becomes embarrassed, later worrying whether she snored or looked unattractive. On the final internship day, the twins initially sit farther from him, but conversation returns to normal after Kurona addresses the incident 43 44 45 48.
