Background / History

Asuka’s mother, Soryu Kyoko Zeppelin, was a scientist at NERV’s German branch. During Unit-02’s contact experiment, her soul split: the portion containing her maternal love remained inside the Eva, while the portion left in her body treated Asuka’s doll as her child and no longer acknowledged Asuka as her daughter. Kyoko eventually hanged herself, leaving Asuka with a lasting psychological scar 21.

After her mother’s death, Asuka vowed never to cry over weakness or failure. Although she concealed her grief while awake, she continued crying in her sleep and calling for her mother. Huang Zhetian witnessed this during their synchronization training and comforted her 16 21.

Asuka arrived with Unit-02 aboard the naval transport fleet, where she met Shinji, Huang Zhetian, and their classmates. Following the Fish Angel battle, she reported to NERV Headquarters in Tokyo-3 and moved into Misato’s apartment despite initially objecting to living with the two boys 4 8 9 10 11.

Personality

Asuka is proud, outspoken, and intensely competitive. She initially declares Unit-02 superior to both Unit-01 and the Special Unit, and she resents sharing the spotlight during her first battle in Japan. Piloting is central to her self-worth: she explicitly says she does it to show the world what she can accomplish 4 13 47.

Her confidence conceals a strong need for recognition. When Shinji’s synchronization results approach hers, she fears being surpassed and receiving no praise. She also interprets her teammates’ injuries as evidence that she has not worked hard enough. Kaji describes her tough exterior as a cover for vulnerability and a desire to be cherished 15 19 23.

Asuka often expresses embarrassment or jealousy through insults, threats, slaps, and kicks. Her affection is nevertheless visible in quieter actions: staying near Huang Zhetian while he recovers, thanking him for comforting her, and preparing food for him despite cutting her hands. She can also put aside her pride during emergencies, obeying the order to evacuate Shinji rather than insisting on fighting 14 15 16 20 26.
