Background / History

Misato’s father left her and her mother to pursue his work in Antarctica. She resented his abandonment and secretly witnessed her mother crying. During the Second Impact, her father sacrificed his own chance of survival so that Misato could live; despite this, she says she has never completely forgiven him 10.

Misato and Ritsuko Akagi attended the same university and became close friends. They spent a period apart after graduation, and Misato only recently learned that Ritsuko’s mother had died 16 44.

By Shinji Ikari’s arrival in Tokyo-3, Misato is a lieutenant colonel in NERV’s Operations Section One. Her assignment to collect him places her directly in the Fourth Angel’s path 1 3.

Appearance

  • Bearing: Has an upright soldier’s posture and visible muscular definition from training 11.
  • Command uniform: Wears a vivid red commander’s uniform during the Fifth Angel alert 17.
  • Formal attire: Wears a black military dress uniform styled as a long, slit gown, paired with high heels, for the Jet Alone unveiling 40.

Personality

Misato is exuberant, teasing, and often careless in everyday life. She repeatedly gets lost inside NERV, arrives late, dislikes cleaning, and relies on convenience-store meals. Shinji’s opinion nevertheless matters enough to her that she helps clean the apartment after he moves in 2 3 10 44.

She is sensitive to parental neglect and uneasy about adults making children fight. Before Shinji’s first deployment, she questions the assumption that being Gendo’s son makes his participation natural. She later criticizes Gendo for Rei’s sparse belongings and poor living arrangements 3 44.

In combat, Misato balances concern for individual pilots with humanity’s survival. She keeps the injured Rei available as an emergency replacement for Shinji, but urgently demands Rei’s recovery when Ramiel overwhelms Unit-00. She does not blame Rei for being ambushed before she can fight 18 31 32.

Her professional restraint can give way to a fierce temper. She maintains a polite façade during negotiations with the Pacific Fleet’s commander, then kicks the elevator after leaving. At the Jet Alone presentation, she dents a locker after the representative dismisses the importance of human will 41 47.

Abilities & Skills

Operations Command

Directs NERV’s battlefield response, including city defenses, EVA deployment, and emergency recovery 17 18 30 32.

  • Orders Tokyo-3 into combat configuration and places personnel at battle stations 17.
  • Deploys Unit-01 while retaining Rei as a contingency pilot 18.
  • Commands automated guns, missile silos, and railguns to support Unit-00 against Ramiel 30.
  • Coordinates Shigeru Aoba, Hyuga Kou, and Maya Ibuki, who assist her during combat despite normally belonging to different departments 30.
  • Insists that an operations commander must be informed about weapon development and equipment plans; access remains subject to Gendo’s authority 20.

Tactical Planning and Recovery

Develops alternatives when standard interception methods fail 32 33 35.

  • Abandons the failed Ramiel interception plan and detonates Unit-00’s supports to shield it during emergency recovery 32.
  • Rejects surrender and a bombing option that would destroy NERV Headquarters along with Ramiel 33.
  • Plans the Positron Cannon operation: Rei fires, Unit-01 and UN forces draw out the target, and the Magi System and technical department guide the shot 35.
  • Her plan succeeds when Rei destroys Ramiel’s core 38.
  • Her judgment is not infallible: she overlooks Unit-02’s Type B Equipment until Rei warns her during the Seventh Angel deployment 50.

Driving

Handles her Renault through collapsing streets and battlefield hazards 1 2.

  • Evades falling buildings, rubble, and the Fourth Angel’s movements 1.
  • Stops at a blocked road with a controlled drift 1.
  • Her driving ability does not extend to reliable navigation; she becomes lost both on the approach to Tokyo-3 and inside NERV 2 3.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Unit-02 emergency power equipment — Brings the emergency power-socket manual to the fleet and arranges an external power connection on the aircraft carrier Beyond the Rainbow 47 50.

Relationships

  • Shinji Ikari — Subordinate and housemate. She arranges for him to live with her out of gratitude for saving humanity and rescuing her, and finds his presence reassuring. Ritsuko nevertheless accuses her of grooming and offers Shinji legal assistance, which he declines 8 14 16 25 35.
  • Ritsuko Akagi — College friend and NERV colleague. Their friendship includes frequent teasing and criticism of Misato’s habits. Misato accompanies her to the Jet Alone unveiling specifically to support her 16 40 44.
  • Rei Ayanami — Pilot under her command and later a housemate. Misato presses for her rescue during the Ramiel battle, helps bring her to the apartment, and asks her to use “Misato” rather than a formal title at home 31 32 44.
  • Asuka Langley Shikinami — Longstanding acquaintance and Unit-02 pilot. Misato introduces her to Shinji and orders her into battle against the Seventh Angel 46 50.
  • Gendo Ikari — Superior whose treatment of the pilots increasingly angers her. She condemns his neglect of Shinji and challenges his refusal to recover Rei from a failed operation 3 25 31 32.
  • Her father — A source of unresolved resentment and gratitude. Shinji’s rescue briefly makes her feel that her deceased father has returned to protect her 1 10.
  • Pianpian — Penguin roommate. A genetically modified Hot Spring Penguin that lives in a refrigerator marked “PEN” and likes beer 11.
