|---|---|
| Name | Ritsuko Akagi (赤木律子) |
| Alias(es) | Dr. Akagi 3 |
| Gender | Female 25 |
| Affiliation | NERV Headquarters, Technical Development Department 4 |
| Occupation/Role | Chief of Technical Section One; head of the EVA Development Project 4 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 3, “Complete life” 3 |
Background / History
Ritsuko attended the same university as Misato Katsuragi, and the two remained close friends after graduation. They spent a period apart after college; Misato later admitted that she had only recently learned of Ritsuko’s mother’s death 16 44.
Her mother, Dr. Naoko Akagi, developed the MAGI Three Sages Supercomputer System. Its three cooperating supercomputers serve as NERV’s central system for internal control, management, and automation 28.
By Shinji Ikari’s arrival at NERV, Ritsuko leads Technical Section One and the EVA Development Project. Her work includes hands-on EVA preparation, pilot testing, equipment development, and technical support during Angel battles 3 4 14 35.
Appearance
- Dyed blond hair: While watching Shinji address NERV’s staff, she recalls a younger version of herself from before she dyed her hair blond 16.
- Work clothing: She wears a diving suit while working in an EVA’s red antifreeze coolant and is later described wearing a coat during Shinji’s medical examination 3 20.
Personality
Ritsuko is scientifically minded and openly atheist. She regards beings called gods as unusual organisms rather than objects of worship, although she studies religious ideas because of their relevance to NERV’s leadership and her work 41 43.
She takes scientific competition seriously and is fiercely proud of her EVAs. The prospect of Jet Alone replacing them provokes her contempt, while restrictions on her proposed F-Type Equipment leave her frustrated with NERV’s higher authorities 39 41.
Her dry humor frequently targets Misato’s lateness, domestic incompetence, and conduct toward Shinji. Her concern is not entirely teasing: she investigates the safety of Shinji’s proposed living arrangement and later offers him legal assistance after suspecting misconduct 3 7 8 16 44.
Ritsuko combines concern for pilots with an awareness of their strategic importance. She respects Shinji’s refusal to undergo an additional AT Field test and protects his sensitive medical findings, but also attempts to pressure him into handling the Jet Alone emergency by invoking his activities at headquarters 14 21 42.
Abilities & Skills
EVA Engineering and Equipment Development
Ritsuko directs EVA development and uses combat observations to plan improvements 4 19.
- Develops Unit-01’s sword and shield, which prove useful against Ramiel 39.
- Originally proposes full-body F-Type armor, but higher authorities prohibit its deployment; even the sword and shield push the permitted limits 39.
- Recognizes that conventional ranged weapons offer little benefit to Shinji compared with his own destructive abilities, and considers improvements to Unit-01’s armor instead 19.
- Explains that EVA armor must restrain the biological weapon inside while controlling its movements, contributing to enormous energy consumption 41.
- Rejects nuclear reactors as unsuitable for intense EVA combat because of their flaws, while noting that safer N² reactor technology remains immature 41.
AT Field and Angel Analysis
Ritsuko interprets Angel patterns, AT Field behavior, and pilot synchronization data 6 8 17.
- Advises Shinji to neutralize an Angel’s phase space with Unit-01’s own AT Field 6.
- Identifies the Fifth Angel through its blue pattern analysis 17.
- Explains that ordinary human AT Fields principally maintain individual existence, making Shinji’s ability to deploy one directly with his body exceptional 14.
- Detects that the first Positron Cannon shot struck an energy projection of Ramiel’s core rather than the real organ, and calls for corrected MAGI data 36.
Technical Operations and Pilot Assessment
Ritsuko coordinates technicians, recovery work, testing, and the handling of classified pilot information 8 14 21 23.
- Directs post-battle cleanup and Unit-01’s preliminary inspection through remote monitors 8.
- Oversees calibration of Shinji’s simulation training system 14.
- Leads the team that immobilizes Unit-00 with phenolic resin after its rampage 23.
- Provides technical explanations for the Positron Cannon operation, including MAGI-assisted corrections for Earth’s rotation, magnetic field, and gravity 35.
- Reviews specialist medical reports and prepares a restricted version of Shinji’s results for wider circulation 20 21.
Relationships
- Misato Katsuragi — Close friend and former college classmate. Their friendship includes frequent banter, drinking together, and disagreements over pilot welfare, secrecy, and Misato’s relationship with Shinji 16 18 20 25 44.
- Shinji Ikari — Pilot, research subject, and friend. Ritsuko calls his performance “outstanding,” protects his confidential health information, and increasingly collaborates with him on equipment ideas 14 16 21 39 43.
- Maya Ibuki — Assistant and direct subordinate. Maya brings her Unit-01 analysis reports and follows her instructions concerning classified records 8.
- Gendo Ikari — Commander and superior. He authorizes Unit-00 testing and controls what equipment information may be shared; his decisions limit Ritsuko’s freedom to disclose information or deploy her designs 9 20 39.
- Rei Ayanami — Pilot whose synchronization tests Ritsuko supervises. Ritsuko questions her readiness for deployment, but later becomes noticeably withdrawn around her at a private dinner. The reason for this discomfort is not explained 18 22 28 44.
- Naoko Akagi — Deceased mother and creator of MAGI. No cause of her death is provided in the documented passages 28 44.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shinji’s Arrival and First Battle
- Meets Shinji after Misato arrives twelve minutes late, then introduces him to Unit-01 during a level-one alert 3 4.
- Supplies AT Field advice during his first Angel battle and subsequently reviews data showing a stable 333% synchronization rate and AT Field soul-matter density six times the Angel’s 6 8.
- Classifies his records at the highest clearance, except for basic information and combat footage, and orders the data forwarded to the commander 8.
Training and Medical Findings
- Offers to test Shinji’s independently deployed AT Field, but does not press him when he declines; keeping him willing to pilot Unit-01 takes priority over his research value 14.
- Reviews post-battle reports showing that his biological age is only 60% of his chronological age, with slower telomere shortening and no abnormal telomerase activity 20.
- Warns Shinji to keep those findings secret because they could attract dangerous attention from people unwilling to accept their own mortality 21.
Unit-00 Reactivation
- Attempts to stop Unit-00’s connection when it goes out of control during Rei’s synchronization test. She cannot immediately explain the recurrence because Rei’s recent simulations had shown no problems 22.
- After Unit-01 intervenes, her team secures Unit-00. She explains how Unit-01 reached the chamber on internal battery power, but does not explain why it moved independently 23.
- Reports that subsequent system adjustments leave Rei’s synchronization lower and unstable, though sufficient for combat 28.
Ramiel Operation
- Monitors Rei’s declining synchronization during Ramiel’s initial attack and warns that ejecting her would remove Unit-00’s protective AT Field 30 32.
- Briefs the pilots on Misato’s Positron Cannon plan: Unit-00 fires at the exposed core, Unit-01 may help draw it out, and MAGI and the technical department handle targeting support 35.
- Recognizes the false-core hit during the first shot and later confirms that the real core has been struck 36 38.
Jet Alone Showdown
- Attends Japan Heavy Chemical Industries’ unveiling as NERV’s chief representative, accompanied by Misato and Shinji for support 39 40.
- Challenges Jet Alone’s internal nuclear reactor but loses the technical debate. Despite outwardly dismissing the confrontation, she burns its promotional brochure 41 42.
- Reveals that the supposedly unmanned machine still relies on a human operator through an invasive brain-computer interface 42.
- Denies causing its runaway behavior, describing it as predictable because powerful financial interests would oppose a threat to NERV’s position 42.
- Arranges Unit-01’s intervention and urges Shinji to crush Jet Alone without damaging its reactor. The public defeat halts JA production, leaves its manufacturer near bankruptcy, and reinforces her reputation as a leading scientist 42 43.
Private Gathering and Incoming Personnel
- Joins a dinner celebrating Rei’s move and the Jet Alone victory, but her discomfort around Rei changes the gathering’s mood 44.
- Prepares handover documents for the Second Child and Unit-02’s arrival. She also briefs Shinji and Misato on Mari Makinami Illustrious’s destruction of the Third Angel and explains IPEA’s independence from NERV 45.
Notable Quotes
“My assessment of him has only ever been one word—outstanding!” 16
“Thanks, but I’m an atheist. What you call gods are nothing more than rather unusual organisms to me.” 41
“This is a technological showdown. A scientific showdown is a clash of ideas. How could that be boring?” 41
Trivia
- Ritsuko smokes during her conversation with Misato at Akasaka Bar 25.
- She acknowledges accessing surveillance footage outside Misato’s apartment to follow the operations commander and ace pilot’s activities 25.
- Her closeness with Misato and Shinji inspires a workplace rumor that the trio has formed a clique to strip Gendo of authority; the narration identifies this as a rumor, not an established conspiracy 44.
