Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Innate human-body A.T. Field | 1 8 14 | Possesses the ability from birth, initially interpreting it as divine power. Uses it to protect Misato before learning its technical name. |
| Power expressed through Unit-01 | 5 6 | Controls the EVA as naturally as his own body. Deploys defensive fields, supersonic movement, immense strength, and previously unavailable eye beams. |
| Stable 333% synchronization | 8 | Post-battle analysis records a stable synchronization rate of 333%; his A.T. Field’s soul-matter density is six times the Fourth Angel’s. |
| A.T. Field neutralization learned | 16 | Masters neutralization during his first simulation training, allowing conventional EVA weapons to attack exposed Angel cores. |
| Synchronization rises to 369% | 20 | Reaches 369% while enduring the Fifth Angel’s burning light whips. His stronger field prevents the captured whips from extending further. |
| Physical transformation and stronger personal field | 20 21 25 | Medical examinations reveal exceptional health and slowed biological aging. Shinji later confirms that piloting Unit-01 has strengthened the field projected by his human body. |
Background / History
Before becoming Shinji Ikari, he died after being struck by a truck and awoke as a newborn in another world. His parents had chosen “Shinji” for a boy and “Rei” for a girl. His knowledge of the world came chiefly from a single short video watched in his previous life; fourteen years later, he remembered the goal of becoming a god and his unfavorable impression of Gendo, but not the full story or even Asuka’s name 1 15.
Gendo sent him to grow up in a relative’s home with little supervision. Reports described him as withdrawn, fascinated by mythology, and seeking comfort from church priests. Shinji spent those years preparing for the day he believed he would become a god, although he had no concrete method for achieving it 4 5 25.
At fourteen, he traveled to Tokyo-3 after being contacted by someone claiming to work for his father. He arrived carrying Misato’s photograph, encountered an attacking Angel, and protected her amid the destruction. Once brought to NERV, he regarded his first sight of Unit-01 as a destined meeting 1 4 8.
Appearance
Shinji’s delicate features make others expect a timid child, contrasting sharply with his confidence and fighting ability 4 14.
- Build: Tall and slender, with a physique Misato praises after his first battle 7 16.
- Face: Expressive brows and eyes; his eyes curve into gentle arcs when he smiles 3.
- Hair: Short, often smoothed into a slicked-back style 14 16.
- Pilot attire: A tailored deep-purple combat suit matching Unit-01 16.
- Military attire: A long-skirted white lieutenant colonel’s uniform during the Pacific Fleet visit 46.
Personality
Shinji combines a warm, preacher-like manner with pronounced self-confidence. He quotes scripture, addresses others as “children of man,” and speaks openly about becoming a god. Despite this religious presentation, he says that he believes only in himself. Misato initially interprets his ambitions as adolescent escapism, while his victories gradually lead NERV personnel to take his promises of salvation seriously 2 3 17 35.
His compassion has limits. He protects injured Rei, listens attentively to Misato and Asuka, and becomes angry at Rei’s neglected living conditions. Against people he considers cruel or sinful, however, he can be openly contemptuous and physically punitive: he knocks out classmates’ teeth and severely beats Gendo after the commander refuses to recover Rei 13 26 31 48.
Piloting Unit-01 gives him a sense of belonging and security that ordinary life and simulation training cannot reproduce. He longs to return to real combat, treats suffering as a trial, and remains at NERV primarily to stay with the EVA rather than for money or institutional loyalty 17 20 25.
Abilities & Skills
Human-Body A.T. Field
Shinji can consciously project an A.T. Field without an EVA—an exceptional ability, since ordinary human fields chiefly maintain individual existence 14.
- Protects Misato from the destruction surrounding their first meeting 1 8.
- Stops a classmate’s punch while keeping his hands in his pockets 12 14.
- Creates footholds of warm-yellow light to leap onto Unit-01’s shoulder and reach NERV’s command platform 23 31.
- Becomes stronger after he begins piloting Unit-01 25.
- Does not allow him to grant supernatural power to others; his encouragement of Hikari gives her courage, not an ability 17.
Unit-01 Synchronization
His unusually high synchronization lets him control Unit-01 with the immediacy of moving his own muscles 5.
- Draws out enough strength to restrain and dismember the Fourth Angel 6.
- Achieves supersonic movement and rapid defensive reactions 6 37.
- Shares the EVA’s sensations, including pain amplified several times beyond that of an ordinary pilot 20.
- Appears able to calm Unit-01 by standing on its shoulder during its attack on berserk Unit-00; he is not inside its cockpit at the time 23.
A.T. Field Combat
His field can defend against Angel attacks, reinforce physical strikes, and overcome opposing fields 6 20.
- Blocks the Fourth Angel’s destructive light without injury to Unit-01 6.
- Projects force ahead of a punch, blasting the Fourth Angel away before contact 6.
- Uses learned neutralization techniques when brute force alone is insufficient 16 19.
- Strengthens a sword’s cutting edge and a shield’s defenses through specialized field-conducting equipment 37.
God’s Eye
Unit-01’s eye beams manifest in response to Shinji wishing for a ranged attack. Ritsuko identifies this as an ability the EVA does not ordinarily possess, made possible by his A.T. Field 6 14.
- Fires high-energy particle beams capable of cutting through an Angel’s field and severing its arm 6.
- Surpasses almost all conventional weapons in destructive power 19.
- Shatters Ramiel’s weakened field and pierces its glowing core, opening the way for Rei’s shot 37.
Physical Condition and Close Combat
Shinji has trained in fighting and can overwhelm classmates despite his delicate appearance 12 13.
- Uses a spinning back kick to send Toji flying several meters 12 13.
- Demonstrates excellent cardiopulmonary function and oxygen uptake far above his peers 20.
- Has blood vessels as elastic as a newborn’s and a biological age far below his chronological age 20.
- His slowed aging is medically observed; immortality is not established 20 21.
Domestic and Academic Skills
- Learns to cook increasingly elaborate meals, including sashimi, tempura, sushi, and grilled meat 24 25 27.
- Has memorized his school textbook thoroughly and prefers Ginpachi’s digressions to straightforward recitation 17.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- EVA-Unit-01 — His primary combat platform and the central component of his planned path toward godhood 4 25.
- Purple combat suit — Includes life-support interfaces, biosignal amplifiers, and protection during violent EVA movement 16.
- High-Frequency Vibrating Particle Knife — Used during simulation training, including thrown attacks against Angel cores 16.
- Giant Gatling gun — Used to destroy virtual Angels after neutralizing their fields 16.
- Long sword / High-Frequency Particle Vibration Sword — Used against the Fifth Angel, Ramiel, and Jet Alone 20 37 43.
- A.T. Field-enhancing shield — Made with special metal that improves field efficiency; withstands Ramiel’s strongest attack while protecting Unit-00’s firing position 37.
- NERV identity card — Bears his photograph and NERV’s half-fig-leaf emblem 25 26.
Operational Limits
- Unit-01 normally requires an external umbilical cable; its internal battery provides up to five minutes of operation, or only one minute at maximum combat output 5 32 33.
- Unit-01 cannot create the unlimited power source Shinji wishes for 20.
- Nuclear and immature N² reactors are unsuitable for high-intensity EVA combat 41.
- The full-body F-Type equipment proposal is prohibited by higher authorities; his sword and shield are reduced versions of that project 37 39.
Relationships
- Misato Katsuragi — Operations commander and housemate. He saves her during their first encounter; she arranges his accommodation in gratitude. Their domestic relationship becomes intimate, and they share a room after Rei moves in 8 10 45.
- Gendo Ikari — Estranged father and NERV commander. Shinji resents being abandoned and treated as a tool; hostility escalates into a severe beating over Gendo’s treatment of Rei 3 4 31 32.
- Yui Ikari — Deceased mother. He repeatedly dreams of her after arriving at NERV and associates the comfort of Unit-01’s cockpit with her embrace 7 11 18.
- Rei Ayanami — Fellow pilot and classmate whose face resembles Yui’s. He rescues her from Unit-00, visits her neglected apartment, helps secure her move into Misato’s home, and welcomes her request to call him “Ikari” 12 23 27 43.
- Ritsuko Akagi — Technical supervisor who studies his abilities and develops his equipment. He recognizes her ulterior motives during the Jet Alone incident and negotiates an agreement before cooperating 14 39 42 43.
- Kozo Fuyutsuki — Deputy commander who stops him from killing Gendo, covers for his violence, and advises him to endure until he can oppose the world’s authorities 31 32.
- Shikinami Asuka Langley — Competitive fellow pilot initially determined to surpass him. Their first meeting unsettles her; Shinji listens to her concerns, tours Unit-02 with her, and prevents her from being thrown overboard 15 48 49.
- Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida — Classmates whom he violently punishes during his first school day 12 13.
- Hikari Horaki — Class representative whom he encourages to lead the students to shelter during an Angel alert 17.
- Maya Ibuki — Technician who analyzes his synchronization data and joins the Child of God Worship Society, a Headquarters fan club devoted to him 8 43.
Story Role / Major Arcs

Notable Quotes
“No. I only believe in myself.” 2

— Asked whether he thinks he is God 3
“Humanity needs a savior, and God now needs humanity. … Then let humanity put its faith in me. I will become its savior!” 35
Trivia
- The opening chapter connects “Shinji” to the nonstandard reading 神児, “child of god,” rather than presenting that meaning as the standard reading of 真嗣 1.
- His ace-pilot compensation reaches ten figures per month when converted to US dollars; the narration places his annual income at roughly one ten-thousandth of global GDP 25.
- The narration jokes that virtual Angels provide “experience points, not kill rewards”; no numerical leveling system is established in the supplied passages 15.
- Angel naming is inconsistent in the supplied text: the Fourth Angel is called “Shamshel Sachiel,” while the Fifth Angel is also identified as Shamshel 2 17.
