Background / History
Gendo directed the Artificial Evolution Laboratory, NERV’s predecessor, and subsequently built up NERV as its commander-in-chief. Fuyutsuki credits him with making the present EVAs possible. His institutional importance and position as a representative of those in power protect him even when Shinji becomes indispensable on the battlefield 31.
After Yui’s death, Shinji grew up in a relative’s home with little supervision from Gendo. Father and son went years without meeting, leaving Gendo dependent on investigators’ reports to understand his child. He summoned Shinji to NERV expecting an isolated, affection-starved boy whom stern commands would turn into an obedient pawn 3 4.
By the time Shinji becomes a pilot, Gendo and Fuyutsuki are following a scenario set in motion fourteen years earlier. Gendo insists that the Children’s assigned roles remain unchanged despite Shinji’s unexpected behavior and power 21.
Appearance
Gendo is tall and thin, with a full beard extending to his sideburns. His cold greeting and assessing gaze make him seem more like a stranger than a father to Shinji 4.
- Round, dark glasses conceal his eyes and frequently reflect command-room screens 2 4.
- Black work uniform is normally kept immaculate 4 34.
- Signature seated pose: rests his hands together in front of his face, hiding its lower half while his glasses obscure his eyes 2 7.
- After Shinji’s assault: wears medical tape over his cheekbone, has a split mouth, and continues using glasses with a cracked lens 34.
Personality
Gendo maintains an impassive exterior even when an Angel threatens the headquarters beneath him. Years of dealing with the powerful elders have taught him to suppress visible reactions to praise or humiliation. Shinji’s defiance nevertheless exposes irritation, while the prospect of losing control over the EVAs leaves him increasingly unsettled 3 4 22 24.
He treats people according to their usefulness within his plans. Shinji is a pawn expected to follow a predetermined script; Rei is a “doll” whose dependence should guarantee obedience. His apparent tenderness toward Rei is explicitly described as psychological control rather than uncomplicated affection 21 24 29.
His stated belief that powerless people should endure the world’s cruelty is challenged by Fuyutsuki, who privately observes that Gendo cannot do so himself. After Shinji beats him, Gendo interprets the pain as proof of contact and a temporary breach of their emotional barrier—an explanation Fuyutsuki suspects is largely a refusal to admit the truth 21 34.
Abilities & Skills
Command and Institutional Authority
Gendo controls NERV’s deployments and major operational decisions. His subordinates can question his orders but remain obligated to obey them 29.
- Accepts command of the Angel interception operation after the UN’s weapons fail 3.
- Authorizes EVA testing, reactivation, and deployment 9 22 29.
- Holds final authority over weapon-development information and equipment plans beyond Misato’s or Ritsuko’s discretion 20.
- Remains accountable to SEELE, whose confidence in his abilities underpins his position 9.
Strategic and Technical Knowledge
Gendo understands the Angels as independently evolved life-forms and coordinates the EVA program around a larger scenario 3 9.
- Recognizes that conventional attacks cannot overcome an Angel’s AT Field and waits for the UN to exhaust its final weapon before intervening 2.
- Knows that Unit-01 will protect Shinji, making victory against the Fourth Angel certain in his assessment; Shinji’s effortless dominance is the unexpected element 7.
- Tracks the readiness of Unit-00, Unit-02, later EVA development, and the experimental Dummy System 9 34.
- States that the remaining Angels must be defeated to set a ritual in motion 34.
Psychological Manipulation
Gendo attempts to control pilots through dependency, insecurity, and the threat of replacement 4 22 29.
- Expects Shinji’s childhood isolation and need for affection to make him compliant 4.
- Orders Shinji to spend more time with Rei as part of the existing plan 21.
- Invites Shinji to watch Unit-00’s test specifically to demonstrate that NERV has another pilot and can function without him 22.
- Misjudges Rei’s dependence: her mental state produces a rejection response in Unit-00’s synchronization system rather than the expected result 24.
Relationships
- Shinji Ikari — Son and Unit-01 pilot. Shinji openly hates Gendo for neglecting him and treating others as tools. Their conflict becomes physical after Gendo refuses to recover the gravely injured Rei 3 13 31.
- Yui Ikari — Late wife and Shinji’s mother. Gendo’s understanding of Unit-01’s protection of Shinji is framed through his position as both Shinji’s father and Yui’s husband 7.
- Kozo Fuyutsuki — Deputy commander and Yui’s former teacher. Understands Gendo closely but questions his cruelty toward the Children. Prevents Shinji from killing him, conceals the assault from the higher-ups, and temporarily takes command 21 31 32.
- Rei Ayanami — Unit-00 pilot who initially defends him against Shinji’s criticism. Gendo cultivates her loyalty while regarding her as obedient and replaceable 13 24 29 31.
- Ritsuko Akagi — Technical subordinate responsible for EVA development and pilot data. Gendo dismisses her concerns about Shinji’s mental state and later entrusts her with handling the report on his own injuries 4 9 34.
- Misato Katsuragi — Operations commander. Challenges his refusal to recover Unit-00 and disapproves of his treatment of Shinji and Rei 3 31 44.
- SEELE — Supervising elders who entrust NERV and the EVAs to him. Gendo assures them that deviations remain controllable, while they warn that Shinji must remain under their control 9.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Fourth Angel Interception
- Waits for the UN Forces’ attacks and N2 Mine to fail before taking operational command 2 3.
- Finds Shinji far less submissive than the reports suggested. When headquarters comes under attack, orders the injured Rei awakened for deployment; Shinji instead claims Unit-01 for himself 4.
- Watches Shinji overwhelm the Fourth Angel rather than struggle as anticipated. Unit-01’s gaze briefly makes him feel like an ant being judged from above 7.
- Presents the victory to SEELE as fulfillment of the scenario, with only a controllable deviation 9.
Unit-00 Reactivation
- Uses Shinji’s abnormal mental state as an excuse to lift Unit-00’s freeze 9.
- Attempts to intimidate Shinji through Rei’s test, but Unit-00 goes berserk and reaches past Gendo toward his son. Unit-01 intervenes without Shinji inside it 22 23.
- Insists that technical adjustments or psychological intervention must make Rei able to pilot Unit-00 again 24.
- Excludes Shinji from the next reactivation test because he does not want another failure witnessed by his son 28.
Ramiel and Loss of Command
- Sends Unit-00 against Ramiel alone while keeping Unit-01 on standby, explicitly seeking to “take back control” 29.
- Refuses recovery after Ramiel grievously injures Rei, dismissing her as one of many replaceable dolls 31.
- Is beaten unconscious by Shinji and thrown from the command platform. Fuyutsuki orders Unit-00 recovered and explains Gendo’s absence as overwork and poor health 31 32.
Aftermath and Contingency Plans
- Declines to pursue Shinji’s assault, describing it as an inefficient but direct form of contact between them 34.
- Acknowledges that the Dummy System is not yet usable, leaving NERV dependent on its existing pilots. Discusses using Rei in Unit-01 if other measures fail 34.
- After Ramiel’s defeat, calls Shinji their sharpest available blade. Notes that the elders increasingly favor him but remain troubled by his interest in the “divine throne”; the Second Child’s arrival accompanies their demand for stronger headquarters forces 38.
