Background / History
Birth and Separation from His Parents
Zero was born to Ultraseven and Anne Yuri, a human member of the Ultra Guard. Anne named him Shin Moroboshi after his father’s human identity, Dan Moroboshi. Ultraseven returned to live with them, but the difference between human and Ultra lifespans eventually left Zero without his mother 24.
Too young to retain clear memories of Anne, Zero was taken to the Land of Light and raised by Mother of Ultra. He was told that his parents had died in the line of duty, yet could find no corresponding names in the Martyrs’ Cemetery. Believing that they might have abandoned him for being weak, he became determined to prove himself through power 24.
Exile and Recognition
Zero attempted to touch the Plasma Spark Tower to gain strength, but Ultraseven stopped him. For breaking the Land of Light’s laws, he was exiled to K76 and trained under Leo and Astra. Restrictive Training Armor forced him to reconsider strength, leading him to understand that power used for others was stronger than power sought only for oneself 13 24.
King subsequently revealed that Ultraseven was his father. Ultraseven had withheld that knowledge partly because of controversy surrounding his intervention in a human conflict and Zero’s mixed heritage, but primarily because he wanted his son to live independently of his reputation. The name Zero reflected that wish to begin from zero 24.
When Belial stole the Plasma Spark Tower, Zero joined the rescue effort, earned the tower’s recognition, and defeated him. Father and son finally acknowledged their relationship, and Ultraseven told Zero about Anne and showed him her appearance 24.
Experience with Humanity
Before arriving in Shinji’s world, Zero had fought across multiple universes. He recalled sharing a life with Dan Moroboshi, learning to understand humans, and fighting Atrocious Belial alongside him. He also had previous experience merging with Leito, which informed his discreet treatment of Shinji’s hospital injuries 3 11 26.
Appearance
Zero’s standard body is red, blue, and silver, with two blades mounted on his head. His first public giant-form appearance in Shinji’s world places him at nearly fifty meters tall 18.
- Chest indicator: Sapphire-like when stable; flashes red and sounds an alarm when his reserves run low 19.
- Chest armor: Can absorb solar energy, though this does not remove the limitations imposed by Shinji’s stamina 50.
- Cape and armor: Wears an enormous blue cape and upper-body armor when confronting Ramiel 18.
- Spectral form: Appears beside Shinji while their bodies remain united; initially mistaken for a ghost 3.
- Training-space appearance: Takes on Dan Moroboshi’s appearance in a black suit while teaching Shinji 27.
- Infinite Form: Predominantly silver with purple stripes, four head sluggers, a purple forehead crystal, and shoulder armor; his previous chest armor disappears 50.
Personality
Zero’s protectiveness toward Shinji comes from recognizing his own childhood loneliness in him. Rather than treating Shinji as a vessel or tool, he calls him a partner, comforts him after Gendo’s rejection, and works to help him find a purpose beyond earning his father’s approval 4 10 24.
He is boastful and teasing, frequently punctuating victories with a peace sign and his “twenty thousand years too early” taunt. His complaints about Z’s inexperience conceal affection, while praise of his appearance and photographs readily appeals to his vanity 9 12 34.
As a teacher, Zero is considerably gentler than Leo was with him. He explains techniques patiently, demonstrates movements in slow motion, pulls his blows, and deliberately leaves Shinji an opening during sparring to reward his progress 27.
His commitment to saving lives can outweigh concern for his own safety. Mother of Ultra explicitly warns Shinji about this tendency. Nevertheless, Zero seeks official guidance before intervening in Human Instrumentality and takes precautions to avoid civilian damage during combat 18 23 50.
Abilities & Skills
Fusion and Shared Control
Zero can unite with a human and exchange control of their shared body 3 8 30.
- Takes over Shinji’s body to confront Gendo, communicate with other Ultras, and perform tasks while Shinji sleeps 8 11 27.
- Allows Shinji to control his transformed Ultra body in real combat, retaining the ability to intervene if necessary 30.
- Changes between human-sized and giant-sized Ultra forms 19 26.
- Remains limited by injuries, energy consumption, and Shinji’s physical stamina; solar absorption alone cannot sustain him indefinitely 50.
Space Martial Arts
Zero’s fighting style combines Leo’s instruction with his own experience across the universe 27.
- EVA combat: Uses Unit-01 to dodge an Angel’s attacks, shatter its AT Field with a flying kick, and finish its core with a combat knife 9.
- Hundred Fist: Delivers punches fast enough to leave afterimages; Infinite Form’s Zero Hundred Fist breaks the empowered Angel’s AT Field 9 50.
- Flaming kicks: Break Ramiel’s AT Field and damage the Belial-empowered Angel’s shell 18 50.
- Weapons instruction: Teaches Shinji head-slugger use and some spear techniques 28 30 44.
Head Sluggers
The blades on Zero’s head can be wielded directly or controlled remotely 18 30.
- Slice off three of Ramiel’s points before returning to his head 18.
- Break the Fish Angel’s AT Field and cut deep wounds along its flanks 30.
- Attach beside his chest timer for the Zero Twin Beam 30.
- Multiply into dozens in Luna Miracle Form; Infinite Form supplies four purple-glowing blades 50.
- Are not universally effective: his standard sluggers are deflected by the Belial-empowered Angel’s AT Field 50.
Energy Techniques
| Technique | Documented use |
|---|---|
| Zero Cluster Beam | Fired in an L-shaped arm stance; penetrates Ramiel’s AT Field, annihilates the Angel, and levels the mountain behind it 18. |
| Zero Twin Beam | Uses his chest and mounted head sluggers; fired into the Fish Angel’s mouth to destroy its core, with recoil propelling Zero out of the water 30. |
| Emerium Beam | Fires from his forehead lamp to blast open JA’s rear hatch 26. |
| Emerium Slash | Penetrates the empowered Angel’s AT Field and cuts its shell, though the wound rapidly heals 50. |
| Revolium Smasher | Used alongside multiplied head sluggers in Luna Miracle Form 50. |
| Garnet Buster | Strong Corona Form’s scorching beam; opens a large fissure in the empowered Angel’s shell 50. |
| Eightfold Destruction Beam | Infinite Form’s finishing attack: eight purple beams pierce the Angel’s AT Field and destroy it 50. |
Ultra Psychokinesis
Zero considers himself a psychokinesis specialist, exceeding even his father in this field 29.
- Moves JA’s control rods into place to stop its runaway reactor 26.
- Restrains the Fish Angel from human or spectral form 29 30.
- Softens Unit-02’s landings on warships and helps steady the aircraft carrier beneath it 30.
- Provides physical comfort through his otherwise intangible presence, including a telekinetic embrace for Shinji 24.
- Sustained use outside his transformed body rapidly drains stamina; cushioning Unit-02’s impacts leaves him exhausted 30.
Healing, Perception, and Mind Access
Zero can treat injuries and perceive information unavailable to ordinary humans 3 5 16.
- Healing: Stabilizes Shinji’s critical injuries and later heals his back 3 16.
- Zero Healing Beam: A green beam from his forehead treats Rei’s wounds, nearly exhausting him after a recent battle 19.
- Ultra Vision: Grants Shinji sight across the multiverse toward the Land of Light and helps identify the Music Angel’s divided cores 5 45.
- Energy sensing: Learns Angels’ signatures through combat and subsequently detects their life signs within a limited range 29.
- Memory access: Enters Rei’s memories with her permission and later explores Asuka’s traumatic childhood with Shinji 16 33.
- Soul contact: Guides Shinji into Unit-01’s mindscape to meet Yui and brings Asuka to Kyoko’s soul inside Unit-02. The latter meeting ends when his energy runs out 21 35.
Dimensional and Communication Abilities
Zero can travel through space, communicate over great distances, and create specialized training environments 1 11 27.
- Opens portals while pursuing Genegarg through the multiverse and escapes Bullton’s dimension with Shining Star Drive 1.
- Uses telepathy to contact Z and Ultra Signs to request Space Garrison support 11 23 33.
- Shares memories directly with Zoffy, Father of Ultra, and Mother of Ultra 23.
- Creates a training space where a full day takes less than half an hour outside, allowing Shinji nearly ten days of intensive practice 27.
Languages and Electronic Manipulation
Zero knows most human languages, having learned them from his father, and can transmit basic language knowledge through his fusion with Shinji 28.
- Gives Shinji enough basic German to begin conversing after a short adjustment period 28.
- Enters electronic devices and alters their data using a technique learned from X 13.
- His academic assistance is less reliable: the math homework he completes for Shinji lacks required working and is incomprehensible to the teacher 27.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Zero Glasses / Ultra Glasses — Shinji’s transformation device. They can be stored inside the Palaj Bracelet or disguised as ordinary plain-lens glasses, reverting at either partner’s will. Zero could not make prescription lenses suitable for Dan 18 39 47.
- Palaj Bracelet / Paraghi Shield — Damaged during Zero’s arrival in the alternate universe. Hikari repairs it enough for renewed use but warns him against its stored shining power and bow mode. It also stores the glasses, receives training-space data, controls the upgraded Unit-01, and becomes a spear during the Strong Corona battle 1 37 39 44 50.
- Zero Riser and New Generation Capsules — Used with a Light Card bearing Shinji and Zero’s faces to activate Infinite Form. Capsules Alpha and Beta contain the powers of Ginga, Orb, Victory, and X; Limings led development of the Riser and enhanced Capsules 46 50.
- Z Riser and Ultra Medals — Gives Z the Riser and medals of Zero, Ultraseven, and Leo before Bullton pulls him into another dimension 1.
- Training Armor — Historical equipment worn during his exile on K76; restricted his power while he learned the meaning of strength 24.
Relationships
- Shinji Ikari — Human partner and student. Zero saves his life, becomes a protective older-brother figure, and encourages his dream of protecting Tokyo-3’s families 3 4 10 27.
- Ultraseven / Dan Moroboshi — Father. Concealed their relationship so Zero could develop independently, but continued watching over him; they acknowledged one another after Belial’s defeat 24.
- Anne Yuri — Human mother. Named him Shin Moroboshi; her death and his lost memories of her underpin his determination to reunite Shinji with Yui 24.
- Mother of Ultra and Father of Ultra — Elders who cared for him like their own child. They support his mission while warning him not to disregard his safety 23 24.
- Leo and Astra — Trainers on K76. Leo is Zero’s master and the source of his Space Martial Arts foundation 13 24 27.
- Ultraman Z — Self-proclaimed disciple. Zero denies formally accepting him, repeatedly calls him “one-third of a half-baked rookie,” but pursues him, supplies his equipment, and later sets out to help him 1 12 37.
- Hikari — Scientific ally. Repairs Zero’s bracelet, supports the plan to revive Yui, and agrees to guard Earth while Zero visits Z’s universe 27 33 37.
- Limings — Close childhood friend and developer of the Zero Riser and enhanced Capsules. Initially hides his contribution out of fear that Zero will endanger himself to honor it 46.
- Rei Ayanami — Trusted confidante whom Zero and Shinji treat as Shinji’s sister after investigating her origins. Zero heals her and encourages her to explore the meaning of bonds 16 19.
- Asuka — Learns Zero’s secret after he and Shinji rescue her. Zero helps her confront childhood trauma and reunites her with Kyoko’s soul 30 31 33 35.
- Yui Ikari — Thanks Zero for protecting Shinji. Her account of NERV’s secrets prompts his effort to stop Human Instrumentality and arrange her return 21 23 33.
- Gendo Ikari — Initially an adversary because of his treatment of Shinji and Instrumentality plans. Zero confronts him directly, while the Space Garrison seeks to win his cooperation by reviving Yui 8 27 32.
- Belial — Long-standing enemy. Zero defeated him in his first real battle; a fragment of Belial later empowers an Angel in Shinji’s world 16 24 50.

- Zero enjoys Masked Rider Kuuga enough to give Shinji a break from training when it airs, enthusiastically bringing him into the fandom 47.
- Despite his age, he remains interested in mechs and reacts with youthful indignation when the pilots are denied their school trip 5 48.
