Background / History
Childhood and Kyoko’s Death
Asuka’s mother, Kyoko, suffered an accident during an experiment with Unit-02. The maternal portion of her soul was absorbed into the Evangelion, leaving her mentally unstable. She treated a doll as her child, rejected Asuka, and wanted to take her daughter with her in death. Asuka’s father also had an affair with Kyoko’s attending physician in front of her 33 35.
Kyoko eventually hanged herself in Asuka’s presence. The remainder of her soul subsequently returned to Unit-02 and reunited with the portion already inside it, though Kyoko could not explain how this happened. Asuka remained unaware that her mother’s complete soul was protecting her through the Evangelion 35.
Arrival in Japan
Asuka traveled from Germany with Unit-02 aboard the Pacific Fleet. Her first meeting with Shinji was confrontational: Zero, controlling Shinji’s body, caught her attempted slap and addressed her in German. She immediately noticed the change in demeanor when Shinji regained control 28.
After the Fish Angel battle, Shinji and Zero explained their shared body and the circumstances behind their partnership. Although shaken by the giant’s overwhelming strength, Asuka agreed to protect their secret 30 31.
She later moved into Misato’s apartment and transferred into Shinji’s class. She chose the seat beside him, claiming that she needed to watch Zero to ensure he did not harm Shinji 33 34.
Reconciliation with Her Mother
When Asuka cried for her mother in her sleep, Zero and Shinji entered her memories. They comforted her younger self, and Zero used his light to soothe her emotional wounds 33.
Zero then brought Asuka’s consciousness into a white space within Unit-02, where she met Kyoko’s soul. Kyoko apologized and explained the experiment’s effects. Understanding that her mother had not rejected her because she was inadequate dissolved much of Asuka’s resentment. After returning to her body, she embraced Unit-02 and thanked Shinji and Zero 35.
Kyoko was not resurrected during this reunion. Zero later explained that restoring her was not yet possible; Yui’s resurrection had been easier because Yui’s body remained inside Unit-01 36.
Appearance
Asuka is introduced wearing a beige dress, with long brown hair flowing freely and two red clips on her head 28.
- Hair: Long and brown 28.
- Accessories: Two red hair clips 28.
- Pilot clothing: Uses a red combat suit 29.
- Swimwear: Purchases a red-and-white striped swimsuit before the planned Okinawa trip 47 48.
Personality
Asuka is proud, competitive, and determined to be the best Eva pilot. Piloting is central to her sense of worth, so Shinji’s transformation into a giant powerful enough to defeat Angels leaves her feeling outclassed. Even after learning why Zero saved Shinji, she privately resolves to surpass him 31.
She often conceals affection behind insults and an affected air of superiority. Her jealousy over Shinji’s lunch for Rei disappears once she learns that Rei is his sister. Later, the suggestion that Shinji might leave their world makes her panic; she eventually asks him to stay and promises to prevent others from harming him 34 47.
Her curiosity frequently overcomes her hostility toward Zero. Despite calling him an idiot or an alien, she becomes absorbed in his accounts of Ultra Warriors and past battles 34 48.
