Dark Radiant Zero and Shinji battled the Final Angel, which overwhelmed them despite their desperate resistance. NERV’s staff rallied behind them, and their cheers helped Zero rise again as Lilith warned that their light was too faint to stop the destruction.
Zero and Shinji unleashed their strongest attacks against the Final Angel, but it caught and destroyed their assault, then overwhelmed them with psychokinesis. They poured their remaining strength into a Cluster Descium Burst against the D4 Ray, but the beam prevailed and rushed toward Zero.
After D4 defeated Zero, he prepared to sacrifice himself with Ultra Dynamite, but Saberuno revealed that D4 had torn open a dimensional rift threatening Earth and the solar system. Saberuno forced Zero to choose between retreating with Shinji and his companions or using his remaining energy to stop the rift, leaving Zero facing a desperate decision.
Zero sacrificed himself to close the dimensional rift, leaving Shinji separated from him and Earth’s defenders grieving. The Final Angel then revealed that Saberuno had orchestrated events to use Zero as the key to his plan to ascend as a cosmic law opposing the existing gods.
As the Final Angel humiliated Zero and left humanity facing defeat, Misato rallied NERV while the others struggled with despair. In the Commander Room, Gendo and the others recognized that Saberuno had controlled SEELE and meticulously engineered Zero’s downfall.
After the Final Angel defeated Zero, Gendo resigned and left command to Fuyutsuki, while the surviving pilots prepared to fight back. As Ultimate Force Zero arrived and saw Zero hanging from the enemy, the story left them stunned.
The Final Angel claimed Zero was dead and sent four flesh-and-blood copies armed with replica Lances of Longinus against the Zero Guard. In the Land of Light, the Ultras learned Zero's life energy had vanished, and Limings began relaying the results of an investigation into Hayato Noda's identity.
Limings revealed that Celebro, the last survivor of a destroyed planet, had manipulated events in Universe 195 and was behind Zero’s injuries and the stolen technology. The Ultra Brothers prepared to rescue Zero while Limings was ordered to protect the Land of Light and activate a device at the Plasma Spark Core.
Ultimate Force Zero fought the Final Angel’s Mass Production Models, but their AT Fields and rapid regeneration overwhelmed the heroes, forcing them to retreat after Zero’s final plea. Shinji returned to NERV with Zero’s Ultra Glasses, now turned to stone, leaving the others to believe Zero was dead.
After Zero sacrificed himself to save Shinji, Fuyutsuki appointed Yui Ikari acting commander-in-chief so she could preserve the hope Zero had fought for. The Final Angel then revealed Mass Production Models in eleven cities and gave humanity eighteen hours to hand over Lilith and Zero’s human-form companion.
Celebro used Zero’s defeat to give humanity eighteen hours to surrender the Zero Guard and Lilith, while broadcasting the threat across the world. The chapter ended with panicked crowds demanding that NERV hand them over as Celebro watched with satisfaction.
Yui Ikari learned that Mirror Knight and Glenfire remained committed to protecting humanity despite protesters demanding they be handed over. In New York, riots and attacks erupted as UN diplomats learned about NERV, SEELE, Lilith, and the Human Instrumentality Project, and Hao Xiaoxi reached a meeting of the permanent members as Zhou was asked for Dragon Country’s position.
At a UN meeting, Zhou Zhezhi rejected calls to hand the four giants and Lilith to the Final Angel, arguing that humanity should protect its allies and buy time through negotiations. He prepared to defend Dragon Country’s position at an upcoming UN assembly, despite expecting most of the world to oppose him.
Hao Xiaoxi prepared to deliver Zhou Zhezhi’s speech while NERV struggled to find a way to rescue Zero. A Japanese government official demanded NERV surrender the four allied giants and Lilith, and Mirror Knight and Glenfire agreed to go until a woman’s voice stopped them.
Yui Ikari resisted the government’s demand to seize the Four Giants and Lilith, then accepted the ultimatum while preparing a final appeal to humanity. At the UN, Hao Xiaoxi began delivering Dragon Country’s response as Yui started her broadcast.
Hao Xiaoxi urged the delegates to protect the wounded Ultimate Force Zero and retain control of Lilith rather than surrender them to the Final Angel. Zhou Zhezhi reminded Mike of the Ultramen’s journey to protect Earth and pressed him to choose trust, leaving Mike uncertain about what the Eagle Nation should do.
Hao Xiaoxi announced that Dragon Country would open its underground shelters, despite objections from other nations. Her defiant speech sparked global unrest and a mutiny among UN troops near NERV, leaving humanity fighting itself as the alien threat loomed.
Yui Ikari broadcast a speech revealing that Ultraman Zero and his allies were members of NERV, hoping to give humanity hope before the Alien's deadline. The chapter ended as she began telling the world about her own experiences.
Yui Ikari urged humanity to support the Ultra Warriors, and people around the world responded with messages of hope that helped calm the unrest. The authorities refused to hand over Glenfire and Mirror Knight, while Shinji remained unconscious.
Humanity refused to surrender the Zero Guard and Lilith, and Yui Ikari ordered the forces to hold out while they awaited help from the Land of Light. As Saberuno's countdown ended, Asuka, Rei Ayanami, and Kaworu Nagisa prepared to defend the world as he began his threat against humanity.
The Final Angel devastated Tokyo-3 and extinguished the sun, plunging Earth into darkness as humanity realized the scale of his power. He declared that humanity had no future, while panic and blame erupted in the shelters.
Saberuno unleashed a world-spanning black mist that extinguished the last sunlight and generated an Anti-AT Field, turning people caught outside into LCL. Most of humanity remained in underground shelters, where the lights failed and panic grew as children held onto the hope that Ultraman would save them.
As the EVAs prepared to fight the Final Angel, Shinji battled the versions of himself embodying the pain and failures of his past cycles. With Zero’s lingering light and his own resolve, he broke Reverse Shinji’s AT Field and declared that he would keep fighting to protect others.
Shinji accepted Reverse Shinji’s memories and vowed to save Zero, while NERV devised a plan to revive Zero using Magnalium Energy. Kaji volunteered to retrieve the energy from the research institute and departed by helicopter after promising Misato he would return.
Asuka, Kaworu, Rei, and NERV prepared to rescue Zero while the Final Angel made plans to absorb Lilith. After Kaji returned with the Magnalium Energy, Asuka retrieved the Lance of Longinus, and the rescue operation was ready to begin.
