Background / History

Urokodaki’s Disciple and Ye Chen’s Tsuguko

Tanjiro comes from a family that sold charcoal. His father taught him Hinokami Kagura as a childhood dance, but Tanjiro does not recognize its nature as a Breathing Style until Ye Chen intervenes. His younger sister, Nezuko, has become a demon while retaining her conscience; finding a way to restore her humanity becomes his reason for joining the Demon Slayer Corps 53 55 79.

He first meets Ye Chen after returning from training assigned by Urokodaki. When Ye Chen offers to take him as a Tsuguko, Tanjiro hesitates because the decision would also affect Nezuko. He accepts after Ye Chen promises to protect both siblings, with Urokodaki’s approval 53 54.

Ye Chen gives him Charcoal and helps him uncover Hinokami Kagura. Tanjiro subsequently trains with Ye Chen and Makomo, then accompanies Ye Chen to Corps Headquarters before taking Final Selection. Along the journey, he receives further training and helps kill demons. At Ye Chen’s villa, he immediately volunteers to clean and later watches Ye Chen spar with Shinobu 55 57 59.

The Empty Town Ambush

Tanjiro joins the investigation of a deserted town, where he cannot detect the demons that Ye Chen senses. During the ensuing ambush, eye-covered tentacles put him, Makomo, and Inosuke to sleep. Ye Chen supplies medicine to wake them, allowing Tanjiro to resume fighting with Hinokami Kagura 65 66 67.

Nezuko emerges from his wooden box to repel an attacking demon hand. Doma then confronts the group and summons Ice Crystal Dolls, which Ye Chen destroys with a large burst of blue-white fire 68 69.

Nezuko’s Hearing

After the group reunites with the injured Hashira, Rengoku questions whether Nezuko can be trusted. Tanjiro firmly insists that she has never eaten anyone and never will. Ye Chen and Giyu support him, but Rengoku refers the matter to headquarters 75 76.

At the hearing, several Hashira advocate killing Nezuko. Sanemi attempts to subdue Tanjiro, only for Ye Chen to stop him. Urokodaki’s letter names Tanjiro among those willing to commit seppuku if Nezuko harms a human; Ye Chen disputes his own inclusion in that pledge 78 79.

Ye Chen ultimately demonstrates that Nezuko can resist rare human blood. Tanjiro becomes alarmed by his mentor’s persistent attempts to tempt her and intervenes once the point is proven. The Hashira withdraw their objections, and Ye Chen secures special training opportunities for Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke 80.

Spider Mountain

On Spider Mountain, Rui demands Nezuko in exchange for sparing Tanjiro. Tanjiro refuses and switches from Water Breathing to Hinokami Kagura, cutting through Rui’s threads. Before their fight concludes, Doma captures Nezuko; a sleep-inducing eye catches Tanjiro, and Doma freezes his legs after he wakes. Inosuke intervenes, followed by Shinobu, who shoots Doma before he can unleash Tenman Lotus 84 85.

During the subsequent pursuit, Giyu protects Tanjiro from Sekido’s lightning. Tanjiro later reaches Nezuko and Zenitsu as Zohakuten attacks, awakening his Demon Slayer Mark to cut through a Wood Dragon. He directs Zenitsu to locate Hantengu’s true body while he and Inosuke hold off Zohakuten 88 90.

Despite their marks, Tanjiro and Inosuke are overwhelmed while trying to rescue Nezuko from another Wood Dragon. Zenitsu beheads Hantengu, but dawn arrives before Nezuko is freed. Tanjiro fears for her until she survives the sunlight, heals, and speaks to him; he embraces her in tears 90 91.

Final Battle and Aftermath

When Makomo explains that Nezuko’s sunlight immunity makes her Muzan’s target, Tanjiro agrees to move her to a protected location, where Tamayo’s medicine can be administered 93.

Tanjiro fights alongside the Hashira, Zenitsu, and Inosuke to prevent Kokushibo and Akaza from freeing the immobilized Muzan. His earrings and Hinokami Kagura remind Muzan of Yoriichi. During the fighting, Tanjiro awakens the Transparent World and beheads Akaza, though the demon survives the decapitation 96 98.

After Ye Chen kills Muzan and the Demon Slayer Corps disbands, Tanjiro’s relationship with Kanao progresses naturally 107.

Appearance

• Dark red hair and a forehead scar distinguish him when he first meets Ye Chen 53 55.
• Earrings matching Yoriichi’s design draw Muzan’s attention during the final battle 96.

Personality

Tanjiro is courteous and earnest: he greets Ye Chen with a sunny smile, readily accepts instruction, and watches the Hashira spar with intense concentration. His willingness to clean Ye Chen’s villa also reflects his helpful nature 53 59.

His concern for Nezuko shapes his decisions. He delays accepting Ye Chen’s offer until her safety is assured, confronts Hashira who want her executed, and repeatedly risks himself to rescue her. He also keeps Zenitsu from pestering her 54 78 84 90.

He is grateful to Ye Chen without being entirely unquestioning. Initially suspicious of the Charcoal gift and the claim that he possesses another Breathing Style, he becomes impressed after testing them. Later, he openly objects when Ye Chen’s blood test frightens Nezuko 55 80.
