Background / History

Upper District Origins

Oleg originally lived in the Upper District. His school classmates pursued careers in medicine, music, and art; one became a singer at the Golden Opera House. Before being stationed below ground, he believed Underworld residents had comparatively easy lives because they mined ore rather than fought Fragmentum monsters. His posting exposed him to their hardship, leaving him regretful and angry at how little the Upper District understood it 23 25.

Protecting Children at the Great Mine

Before his first appearance, Oleg caught Chu Mu working and initially accepted the boy’s story that he was twelve and supporting sick parents. A subsequent visit to the Rivet Town Orphanage revealed that Chu Mu was actually a six-year-old orphan, leading to the Old Director grounding him for a week 4.

When Oleg caught him again, he stopped Chu Mu from reentering a collapsed tunnel. He punched the foreman, who had passed the child off as a twenty-year-old dwarf worker, and ordered him detained in the security office’s dark cell 3.

Oleg warned Chu Mu about cave-ins and pneumoconiosis, then barred children from the mines. However, Chu Mu’s explanation of orphan poverty—and a subordinate’s casual dismissal of the boy’s future—made Oleg recognize that his intervention had also cut off a source of income. He let Chu Mu go without reporting him to the Old Director again, but felt powerless to resolve the conditions forcing children to work 4.

Confrontation at Scott’s Fight Club

When Seele arrived at the Public Security Office pleading for help, Oleg immediately mobilized his guards. Seeing her bloodied feet, he carried her on his shoulder rather than let her run back to the Fight Club 8.

He found Chu Mu gravely injured and stopped the enforcers’ beating. Despite his condition, Chu Mu asked him to save the other children first. Oleg promised to do so, arranged medical attention, summoned reinforcements, and notified the Old Director. He also rejected Scott’s demand that the six-year-old personally answer for injuring him, citing the Architects’ laws on criminal responsibility 9.

Oleg sealed the entire Fight Club, disrupting Scott’s business under the justification of securing the negotiations. When Natasha discovered that the club’s doctor had worsened Chu Mu’s wounds with unsuitable medicinal oil, Oleg suspected Scott’s involvement. He later presented the children’s contracts to the Chief Stoker before addressing Chu Mu’s case, honoring the boy’s request to prioritize their freedom 11 12 13.

Oleg joined the others in urging Chu Mu not to sacrifice his eye under the First Act’s retaliatory ruling. He openly condemned Scott when the club owner demanded that the boy gouge it out himself 15.

Journey to the Surface

After the Old Director told him that Chu Mu would soon lose his sight, Oleg planned an illegal trip to the Upper District so the boy could see the sky again. He knew the passage would soon close and insisted on taking Chu Mu despite the child’s concern that discovery would ruin his career 22.

Oleg concealed Chu Mu and Seele in an oversized supply bag and passed through the cable car checkpoint. On the surface, he arranged lodging and helped them pass as Upper District children. At the Eternal Winter Monument, he displayed his captain’s badge to support Chu Mu’s claim that they were privately educated children under his protection 23 24.

During their restaurant visit, Oleg ordered extra meals after learning that Chu Mu was saving his food to take back below. Their planned outing ended a day early when Seele, distressed by the inequality and food waste around her, asked to return to the Underworld 26 39.

Orphanage Lockdown

Oleg secured the Orphanage for an unidentified important visitor, ordering everyone to remain inside for two days. He also questioned Kafka’s assumed identity as “Ms. Fuka,” an Internal Affairs Officer from Kliperburg. Her unannounced arrival contradicted normal arrangements for visiting officials, and he suspected a connection to the unusually fine ammunition found at a recent killing scene 31 38.

When Chu Mu suggested that the visitor might adopt an orphan, Oleg hurried to bring Seele back. He had long wanted to adopt her himself, but his Upper District residency did not exempt him from restrictions requiring the Supreme Guardian’s permission to adopt an Underworld child 39.

During the visit, elite guards prevented Oleg from entering the classroom corridor despite the children’s crying. He voiced his concern to Gepard, then received orders to assemble his troops for the Underworld Lockdown Mission 42.

Remaining Below and Establishing Wildfire

At the Core Furnace Hub, Oleg helped Gepard’s troops enforce the blockade. Recognizing vendors, miners, and fighters among the protesting residents, he questioned why the Supreme Guardian had ordered him to stand against people whose community he had served 47.

When Natasha revealed that the missing Chu Mu was now completely blind, Oleg removed his armor and left the defensive line to search for him. Gepard warned that leaving would mean being trapped below, but Oleg chose to remain rather than return to the Upper District with regrets. Natasha followed him 48.

After another unsuccessful search with Seele, Oleg accepted Natasha’s argument that they could not neglect disaster victims to keep looking for Chu Mu. He supported forming an organization to restore security and negotiate for supplies, while stressing that recruiting manpower required money. Natasha produced Credits and thousands of Winter City Shields; Oleg inferred Chu Mu’s involvement in the funds. Natasha named the organization Wildfire 49.

Oleg became Wildfire’s public leader, while Natasha exercised its true leadership behind the scenes. Even members such as Seele initially remained unaware of Natasha’s position 110.

Thirteen Years of Resistance

During a Wildfire patrol in Rivet Town, Oleg and his companions encountered humanlike Fragmentum monsters in an alley. Because he was at the front, he suffered the worst injuries, including a severe abdominal wound. Natasha treated him at the Children’s Commune and confirmed that he was no longer in mortal danger. Learning that the Fragmentum had reached Rivet Town, she ordered the evacuation of nearby residents 110.

Over the years, Oleg led Wildfire in battles against vagrants and Fragmentum monsters. Its inadequate equipment left him fighting in a worn-out padded coat rather than the protective armor available to Upper District captains. Natasha repeatedly saved him from life-threatening injuries, and new wounds accumulated over old ones. Despite his age, he continued serving rather than retiring, and would still have chosen to remain in the Underworld if given another opportunity 152.

When Chu Mu returned through a puppet body, Oleg ran from the Great Mine to Natasha’s clinic and embraced him. He insisted that the boy visit in his real body next time so everyone could see how he had grown. The reunion moved Oleg, Natasha, and Seele to tears. Throughout his years of fighting, Oleg had continued drawing strength from his memory of Chu Mu’s selflessness at the Fight Club 152.

Uprising and Negotiations

When Svarog explained that he had sealed the Core Furnace Hub because he predicted the Upper District’s defeat, Oleg and Natasha argued that Wildfire should help defend the surface. Both districts shared the same fate, particularly with only 231 days of mineable geomarrow remaining 156.

Oleg subsequently rejected dependence on the missing Sampo’s secret passage and advocated an uprising through the Core Furnace Hub. He wanted the Underworld to demand dignity and an explanation for its abandonment, rather than passively await a savior. He looked to Chu Mu to coordinate the Underworld’s forces, while Natasha agreed to consider the plan on the condition that casualties be minimized and innocent people protected 158.

After Svarog agreed to reopen the passage, Oleg proposed gathering the leaders of the various factions to formulate a common battle plan. He was willing to negotiate with the vagrants despite their recent clashes with Wildfire because the operation concerned everyone in the Underworld. His knowledge of Silvermane Guard assignments also helped determine the assault’s timing, limiting the likely initial opposition to Kliperburg’s garrison 159 166.

Following Cocolia’s capture, Oleg participated in her interrogation. Her admission that she had abandoned the Underworld and wanted Belobog to perish enraged him, particularly because she herself had been an Underworld orphan. Natasha sent him away before continuing the questioning 169.

Before negotiations with the Silvermane Guards, Oleg released the prisoners held by the assault team, easing tensions. He made an exception for a young noble Guard who had insulted the citizens and claimed gratitude was owed to his ancestors. Oleg slapped him twice—once for disgracing those ancestors and once for disgracing his uniform—and left him behind 172.

Oleg reunited with Gepard at Kliperburg’s steps thirteen years after their separation and confirmed that he had found Chu Mu. Negotiations initially stalled because Bronya’s whereabouts were unknown. When she returned, Oleg represented the assault team in the Council Hall. Bronya praised his record in both the Silvermane Guards and Wildfire, while he modestly described himself as an ordinary soldier doing his duty 172 173 179.

Bronya’s Reunion and the Stellaron Crisis

Oleg told Bronya that Chu Mu was her childhood brother and was distressed to discover that she could not remember him. At her request, he guided her toward the room where Chu Mu was supposed to be waiting, only to learn that he had gone to confront Cocolia. Suspecting that Cocolia was responsible for Bronya’s missing memories, Oleg then accompanied Bronya toward the holding cell 181.

After Cocolia admitted erasing those memories and Chu Mu reunited with Bronya in the corridor, Bronya asked Oleg to let her speak with her mother alone 182.

During the confrontation with the Stellaron-influenced Cocolia, Oleg pulled Gepard to safety after she broke through his shield and stabbed him, while Natasha and Svarog interrupted her attack 190.

When Chu Mu chose to destroy the Stellaron’s will rather than risk being overwhelmed by it, Stelle relayed his farewell to Oleg and Seele. Chu Mu encouraged Seele to lead Wildfire and continue fighting for the Underworld 193.

Rebuilding Belobog

After the crisis, Oleg agreed to become a Silvermane Guard instructor. The Guards wanted his experience to improve the tactics of their numerous recruits. Although he acknowledged that his physical strength no longer matched younger soldiers’, he considered teaching a way to repay the seniors who had trained him. He also argued that Belobog still needed armed forces to protect itself from threats arriving from the sea of stars 202.

As an instructor, Oleg took recruits through neighborhoods to help residents rather than immediately drilling them in combat. He worked alongside them at construction sites and taught that soldiers first needed to understand the people they protected. These activities also sought to repair the Underworld’s distrust of the Silvermane Guards 464.

Bronya’s grant of extensive Underworld autonomy had left Belobog with parallel administrative systems, with Wildfire continuing to maintain order in Underworld communities. Oleg supported eventual reunification and envisioned Wildfire becoming the designation of a unit within the Silvermane Guards. This remained a future goal rather than an accomplished merger 464.

Chu Mu’s Later Return

During the Paskonja Festival, less than a month after the battle at Everwinter Ridge from the perspective of those on Jarilo-VI, Oleg encountered Chu Mu again. He embraced the boy, relieved that this time he had returned in his real body and could speak 464.

Oleg also recognized Kafka as “Ms. Fuka.” She admitted that the name and her claimed family background had been fabricated to facilitate taking Chu Mu in. Oleg’s concern eased after Chu Mu explained that Kafka had saved his life and was his family 464 465.

On the way to see Natasha and the others, Oleg told Chu Mu that Bronya had recovered her childhood memories shortly after his disappearance. He urged him to spend time with her, recognizing that Chu Mu’s life belonged to the wider sea of stars and that he would not remain in Belobog indefinitely. Oleg also shared news of reconstruction and plans to sell old military equipment abroad, explaining that Sampo had volunteered to seek buyers but had not returned 465.

While guiding the group toward the Orphanage, Oleg introduced his apprentice Luka, a Wildfire officer and Underworld boxing champion. He then sent Luka back to patrol, with Wildfire guarding against theft and other crimes as residents gradually moved away from the old mining towns. Chu Mu recognized that Oleg was preparing Luka to inherit his unfinished work 466.

When Natasha’s Orphanage gathering attracted a crowd large enough to pose a stampede risk, Kafka proposed that Natasha address the residents while Oleg brought soldiers to maintain order 476.

Oleg later joined the discussion about the Interastral Peace Corporation’s arrival on Jarilo-VI and the possibility that its old provision of military technology was connected to a debt Belobog could not afford to repay 478.

Appearance

  • Has a resolute, upright face, revealed when he removes his helmet at the Orphanage 38.
  • Wears Silvermane Guard armor over civilian clothing; he removes the armor before entering the crowd to search for Chu Mu 48.
  • Has white hair and, in later appearances, a white beard 152 464.
  • Bears accumulated combat scars, including one that cuts through an eyelid without having damaged the eye 152.
  • During his years leading Wildfire, wears a worn-out padded coat in place of the full protective armor available to Upper District Guard captains 152.

Personality

Oleg is stern and physically forceful with exploitative adults, but attentive to vulnerable children. He takes Seele’s emergency seriously without hesitation, carries her to spare her injured feet, and is visibly shaken by Chu Mu’s injuries. Chu Mu’s determination to save other children leads him to regard the boy as a hero rather than accept his troublesome reputation 3 8 9.

His concern for others increasingly outweighs obedience to regulations. He smuggles the children above ground despite the professional risk and ultimately gives up his chance to leave the Underworld. Nevertheless, he remains practical: when Natasha proposes organizing the abandoned community, his first concern is how to fund recruitment 22 48 49.

His convictions sustain him through years of dangerous service beyond the age at which he could have retired. He remains emotionally attached to Chu Mu, remembering the boy during his own near-death experiences and openly crying at their reunion. His military manner remains firm and booming, but is rooted in affection rather than hostility 152.

Oleg believes the Underworld must act for itself rather than rely entirely on a savior. His call for an uprising centers on equal citizenship and human dignity, while his willingness to cooperate with rival factions reflects his ability to put common interests above past grievances 158 159.

Despite being praised as a veteran hero, he considers himself an ordinary soldier fulfilling his duty. After Cocolia’s fall, his understanding of Preservation emphasizes protecting actual people rather than obeying commands without regard for their consequences. He teaches recruits through direct community service and works beside them rather than demanding effort from a distance 179 464.

His commitment to Belobog makes retirement difficult even after the old regime is overthrown. At the same time, his mentoring of Luka shows an increasing recognition that his ideals and unfinished responsibilities must pass to a younger generation 464 466.

Combat Experience and Tactical Planning

Oleg’s military service and years of Wildfire combat give him extensive practical experience 152 202 464.

  • Helps plan an assault around the Silvermane Guards’ daily deployment schedule, reducing their ability to respond immediately to an emergency in the city 166.
  • Knows Kliperburg’s garrison as a favored posting for noble children and assesses its lack of recent defensive combat experience 166.
  • Supports consolidating the Underworld’s factions and agreeing on a battle plan before advancing to the surface 159.

  • Oversized supply bag — Conceals Chu Mu and Seele during their passage to the Upper District 23.
  • Worn-out padded coat — His protection during years of Wildfire combat, contrasting with the full armor available to Silvermane Guard captains above ground 152.

Relationships

  • Chu Mu — A child he repeatedly protects. Their encounters expose the limits of Oleg’s well-intentioned policing, while Chu Mu’s selflessness earns his admiration 4 9. Oleg draws strength from his memory during years of fighting, tearfully welcomes his puppet-body return, and asks him to visit in person next time. When Chu Mu later returns in his real body, Oleg embraces him and urges him to spend time with Bronya 152 464 465.
  • Seele — A longtime acquaintance who trusts him in emergencies. Oleg wants to adopt her but cannot obtain the necessary exemption from cross-district adoption rules 8 39. After she joins Wildfire, she calls him “Boss” rather than “Uncle Oleg” and is deeply concerned when he is badly wounded 110.
  • Natasha — Collaborator in protecting Chu Mu and aiding the Underworld. They remain below together and help establish Wildfire 12 48 49. Oleg serves as its public leader while she is its true leader, and she repeatedly treats his life-threatening injuries. They jointly argue for aiding the Upper District and participate in Cocolia’s interrogation 110 152 156 169.
  • Old Director — Coordinates with her over the children’s safety; her warning about Chu Mu’s impending blindness prompts his surface-trip plan 9 22 38.
  • Scott — An adversary who resents Oleg’s intervention and threatens to have him removed from office 11 12.
  • Gepard — Fellow officer whose kindness Oleg recognizes after the restaurant visit. Gepard allows him through the defensive line to search for Chu Mu and expresses lasting respect for his choice 42 48. Thirteen years later, they meet on opposing sides but begin negotiations with mutual warmth. Gepard regards Oleg as “a living monument,” and Oleg later rescues him from Cocolia’s attack 172 179 190.
  • Kafka / “Ms. Fuka” — Initially a prospective adopter whose identity he distrusts. He intended to verify her credentials personally before allowing her to take Chu Mu, but the subsequent Underworld crisis prevented an investigation 38 464. When they meet again, Kafka admits the deception, and Oleg accepts Chu Mu’s assurance that she saved him and is his family 464 465.
  • Bronya — Respects Oleg’s service to the citizens and praises his commitment to Preservation. He represents the assault team in negotiations with her, helps her seek out Chu Mu after learning they are siblings, and later tells Chu Mu that her memories have returned 179 181 182 465.
  • Cocolia — The Supreme Guardian whose orders he once served. Her abandonment of the Underworld and admission that she wanted Belobog to perish make him condemn her as irresponsible and cruel. He also resents her role in separating Chu Mu and Bronya and erasing Bronya’s memories 169 181.
  • Svarog — Initially regarded by Oleg as cold and unfeeling. Oleg’s opinion improves when Svarog agrees to reopen the Core Furnace Hub and cooperate in organizing the Underworld’s forces 159.
  • Luka — His apprentice, a Wildfire officer and boxing champion. Oleg tells him stories of Chu Mu’s past, contributing to Luka’s admiration for the boy, and strictly directs his patrol duties. He is deliberately preparing Luka to continue his unfinished work 466.
  • Kruzer — A fellow Wildfire member whose praise of Chu Mu, alongside Oleg’s stories, helps inspire Luka. Kruzer had been Luka’s boxing coach before dying in battle against Fragmentum monsters 466.
