Background / History

Family Life and the Zoo Incident

Angel was born after the Ellisons adopted Su Er. Suli conceived her five years after finding him, reinforcing her belief that Su Er was the family’s lucky angel. Angel grew up doted on by her father and older brother; their indulgence contributed to her developing tooth decay, for which Hermione brought medicine from the Grangers’ dental clinic 1.

After Angel became frightened by Hermione shaking Su Er during an argument, he soothed both girls by promising a zoo trip. During the outing, Angel chose to visit the reptile house. When a python escaped and the crowd panicked, Su Er sheltered her and Hermione in a corner before bringing them out safely, suffering bruises in the process. Angel wiped his sweat while they waited for help and burst into tears upon seeing her parents 2 3.

Discovering Magic

Angel brought Su Er his Hogwarts acceptance letter, became fascinated by its animal-decorated seal, and tore open the envelope herself. She later revealed his admission to Hermione, ending Hermione’s mistaken belief that they would attend different schools 4.

During Dumbledore’s visit, he transformed a wooden chair into a silver-white, golden-horned pony that Angel rode around the living room. He left it for the night, but it reverted to a chair the next morning. Angel cried, guarded the chair, and repeatedly asked when the white-bearded visitor would return 5 6.

Su Er and Suli tried to stop her requests by pretending that mentioning unicorns made Su Er ill. Angel recognized the trick and refused to speak to them for several days. Su Er eventually reconciled with her by inviting her to the magical shopping district and mentioning unicorns 6.

Diagon Alley and Su Er’s Departure

Angel accompanied the Ellison and Granger families to Diagon Alley, where she eagerly requested ice cream and admired a unicorn-patterned cloak at Madam Malkin’s. Su Er secretly commissioned a child-sized version. She discovered it before term began and proudly wore it while asking family members and neighbors whether she looked good 7 9 11.

She also asked Tonks for a unicorn during the Aurors’ visit to the Ellison home. Tonks transformed a stool into a silver horse and added a horn, but could not make it move as Dumbledore’s creation had 10.

Angel was devastated when Su Er left for Hogwarts. He comforted her with a promise involving unicorn Transfiguration, which became his planned Christmas gift and a reason for studying advanced Transfiguration. While he was away, she spent much of her time in his bedroom and contributed a crookedly written “big brother” to a letter from home 11 20 27.

Christmas Reunion

Angel greeted Su Er’s return in tears. During the holiday, she, Su Er, and Suli shared Honeydukes’ Transformation Sweets and laughed at their altered appearances. Suli told him that Angel had asked every day during his three-month absence why he had not written to her 44 45.

At Christmas, Angel received two distinct unicorn gifts: Su Er’s rideable but motionless Transfigured horse, and a tiny moving figurine sent by Dumbledore. Su Er allowed her to believe the figurine was his gift too. Before leaving with Amelia, he warned Angel that the larger unicorn would disappear the following day; she chose to stay home and enjoy more rides 49.

Personality

Angel is openly affectionate toward Su Er, frequently hugging and kissing him, climbing into his bed, and seeking his attention. Her attachment makes separation difficult: she cries when he leaves for school and again when they reunite 1 11 44 49.

She is energetic and mischievous, persistently waking her brother and teasing him about resembling a monkey or being as lazy as a panda. She also loves answering the front door and readily chats with unfamiliar visitors 1 2 10 49.

Her enthusiasm for unicorns can make her stubborn, but she is not indiscriminately demanding. At Madam Malkin’s, she asks to touch the unicorn embroidery rather than insisting on buying the oversized cloak. She also shows concern for others, wiping Su Er’s sweat after the zoo escape and initially panicking when she believes he is ill 3 6 9.
