Background / History

Service to Aulë and Morgoth

Before Morgoth corrupted him, Sauron was a Maia serving Aulë, the God of Craftsmen. His knowledge of craftsmanship later enabled him to guide Eregion’s ring-makers and teach other peoples technologies useful for warfare 238 244.

During the First Age, he bore the title “Sorcerer” and could transform into an enormous vampire. At the beginning of the Second Age, after escaping the Valar’s judgment, he inherited Morgoth’s eastern territory and imposed his authority over the Easterlings 240 244.

Annatar and the Rings of Power

Under the name Annatar, or “Lord of Gifts,” Sauron approached Eregion’s craftsmen in an appearance of goodness and beauty. He worked with the Jewelers’ Guild to forge sixteen Rings of Power and left behind ring-making techniques. Celebrimbor independently forged the Three Elven Rings, which Sauron never touched 132 295.

Sauron subsequently overran Eregion and besieged Imladris. When Celebrimbor refused to disclose the Three Rings’ whereabouts, the Half-orcs hung him from a flagpole and killed him with arrows 71 132.

Durin III’s army aided the Elves against Sauron before withdrawing into Khazad-dûm and sealing its entrances. Unable to pursue them, Sauron ordered his Half-orcs to regard Dwarves as enemies, with particular hatred reserved for Durin’s Folk 86.

Númenor and the Last Alliance

Unable to resist Númenor at its height, Sauron surrendered to Ar-Pharazôn and was taken prisoner. He exploited the king’s pride and desire for immortality, becoming his royal adviser within three years. Over the following decades, he turned most Númenóreans toward Morgoth and persuaded Ar-Pharazôn to attack Valinor 55 96.

Númenor’s destruction killed Sauron’s original body, but his spirit escaped. He later used the One Ring to create the body with which he fought the Last Alliance 80.

During the siege of Barad-dûr, Sauron personally killed Gil-galad and Elendil and crushed Narsil beneath his foot. Isildur used the broken sword to sever his Ring-bearing finger, destroying that body and grievously injuring his spirit. Barad-dûr fell, but its foundations survived because the One Ring remained intact 80 145.

The Long Recovery

Sauron’s servants prepared Mordor for his return while he remained weakened. His Nazgûl advanced his interests across Middle-earth: the Witch-king established Angmar and destroyed Arnor, while other servants amassed forces in Mordor and cultivated alliances with Rhûn and Harad 80 96.

Sauron concealed himself in Dol Guldur for more than a thousand years. The fortress threatened the Woodland Realm and allowed him to watch Lothlórien and Galadriel, while Mordor remained his true stronghold and prepared retreat 55 96 108.

Appearance

  • Dol Guldur manifestation: A black figure standing amid flames, surrounded by immobilizing darkness and spreading black smoke 55.
  • Evil Eye: A gigantic eye atop Barad-dûr, wreathed in scorching flames. Its center contains unfathomable darkness and a terrifying, towering figure 210.
  • Restored body: Towering and hideous, with a terrifying mask, fire blazing behind it, and a heavily spiked right hand bearing the One Ring 298.
  • Battlefield presence: His appearance terrifies enemies and servants alike; even Half-orcs and Trolls avoid approaching him during his advance through Minas Tirith 299.

Personality

Sauron combines strategic foresight with decisive action. Allen considers his instincts exceptionally keen: he identifies an advantage and acts on it quickly. His patient manipulation of Númenor and his schemes spanning both the Second and Third Ages demonstrate his willingness to pursue victories over decades or millennia 96.

His ambition is to rule through fear. He cares nothing for lives other than his own, treating slaves, allied troops, and expendable agents as resources. Tormenting hated enemies and watching carefully constructed schemes succeed are sources of pleasure to him 80 210 298.

Pride and resentment can undermine his calculation. His submission to Ar-Pharazôn remains an intolerable humiliation, and his hatred of Númenóreans drives repeated attacks on their descendants. Saruman exploits this vulnerability at the Black Gate, provoking him into sending out his armies despite strong defensive positions 198.

Abilities & Skills

Craftsmanship and Ring-Making

Sauron’s craft draws on his former service to Aulë 238.

  • Participates in forging the sixteen Rings later distributed to Men and Dwarves; their magic carries deep darkness 132.
  • Forges the One Ring, which contains most of his power 132.
  • Creates Khamûl’s silver chainmail 117.
  • Teaches crafts and engine-making in Númenor, and smelting and warfare-related skills to the Easterlings 238 244.
  • His expertise makes Allen reluctant to introduce gunpowder, fearing Sauron could surpass him in weapons development 238.

Domination and Corruption

Sauron attacks will and spirit as well as physical opponents.

  • Corrupts the nine human ring-bearers into enslaved Nazgûl. By the Second Age, he no longer needs them to retain their rings to remain under his control 59 117.
  • Uses Allen’s Morgul Blade curse to seek his soul through the Unseen World and attempt to bring him under control 136.
  • Draws Saruman into a palantír confrontation, imprisoning his soul temporarily and using evil whispers to corrupt his will 137.
  • Cannot hold a fully resisting Saruman for long while weakened; Saruman escapes but requires prolonged recovery to purge the influence 137.
  • With the One Ring restored, can influence ring-bearers, including those wearing rings made through his techniques 295.

Darkness, Terror, and Sorcery

  • His radiating darkness drains strength and immobilizes Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, and Elrond at Dol Guldur 55.
  • His shriek disperses Saruman’s influence over Mordor’s troops and restores his command at the Black Gate 198.
  • Alters Ashur through dark magic into something neither human nor ghost, increasing his power and granting him magical knowledge 181.
  • Uses an ancient evil incantation alongside Grond’s impact to shatter Minas Tirith’s gates 298.

Surveillance and Spiritual Awareness

  • Uses a Palantír Stone to observe campaigns, track Allen, and investigate the north 171 181 194 210.
  • Senses the condition of the human rings and, once sufficiently recovered, the locations of the seven Dwarf-rings 136.
  • Immediately detects Khamûl escaping his control 136.
  • His palantír surveillance has limits: a northern blizzard obstructs his gaze, forcing him to dispatch a servant to retrieve Ashur 171.

Recovery, Transformation, and Return

  • Has appeared as a vampire, black smoke, a dark manifestation, a flaming Eye, and a reconstructed physical body 55 136 210 240 298.
  • Draws recovery power from living creatures’ fear, despair, hatred, and curses during war 173.
  • Allen suspects the Fisslet crisis involved Sauron forcibly drawing upon victims’ vitality through bronze ornaments; the precise mechanism remains uncertain 240.
  • Can return to Barad-dûr through the One Ring’s power because part of that power remains in the tower’s foundations 300.
  • Sacred light counters him: Galadriel’s Crystal Phial suppresses his Dol Guldur manifestation, while the Elves Jewel later burns his soul directly through his restored body 55 300.

Physical Combat

  • Kills the Last Alliance’s two High Kings during his Second Age intervention 145.
  • Wields an enormous warhammer that sends armored Gondorian soldiers flying with light blows 299.
  • Considers his restored body durable enough to survive a leap from Barad-dûr’s summit 300.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • One Ring — His principal source of power, enabling bodily reconstruction and domination of ring-bearers. After recovering it, he also draws Holmras’s surviving soul into it 295 298.
  • Palantír Stone — Used for reconnaissance, battlefield observation, and attempted spiritual domination 137 171 210.
  • Enormous warhammer — Used during his advance through Minas Tirith 299.
  • Nine Rings of Men — Reclaimed from the Nazgûl after their enslavement. He temporarily returns Khamûl’s ring before sending him against Allen’s forces 117.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Dol Guldur and the Lonely Mountain

The White Council strikes Dol Guldur after Azog takes most of its army north toward the Lonely Mountain. Glorfindel disperses the Nazgûl, and Galadriel ultimately forces Sauron to retreat east. Azog’s subsequent defeat and death leave Sauron’s northern position severely weakened 55 80 108.

The Easterling Offensive

Back in Mordor, Sauron orders Khamûl to enlist an Easterling chief. Ashur’s campaign is intended to destroy Northern Men east of Mirkwood, occupy their lands, and constrain the growth of Allen’s realm while monitoring the Elves and Dwarves 80 108.

War Against Gondor

Sauron launches war partly to accelerate his own recovery. His attempt to intercept northern reinforcements at Nindalf fails, and later ambushes near Emyn Arnen are also thwarted. As Gondor’s allies recover territory, he gathers additional forces at the Black Gate 173 184 194.

Saruman’s magically amplified challenge provokes Sauron into a massive assault. The ensuing defeat forces Mordor to cease fighting, although Sauron continues observing Allen and devising new schemes 198 203 210.

Renewed Schemes in the North

Sauron’s Fisslet scheme leaves afflicted citizens and dangerous Black Gem jewelry that Allen orders recovered and destroyed. Jeremus develops a treatment using the Elixir of Immortality and Miruvor 240 241.

Later, Mordor’s forces enter Mirkwood, while three fire-drakes approach Mount Gundabad to claim it for Sauron. Thorin rejects their demand for submission 273 275.

The Ring’s Return and Minas Tirith

After Gollum reveals the Ring’s whereabouts, Sauron recovers it and constructs a new body at Mount Doom. He personally leads the siege of Minas Tirith, breaks its gates, and drives Ecthelion and Denethor toward the Seventh Level 295 298 299.

Allen intervenes with Ringil and the Elves Jewel as allied reinforcements arrive. Pressed by Allen’s attack, Sauron escapes through a ring of fire; his armies retreat, but the war continues 299.

The Fall of Barad-dûr

During the later assault on Barad-dûr, violent shaking and spreading fissures threaten to collapse the tower. Sauron leaps from its summit, only to be enveloped by the Elves Jewel’s radiant flames, which bypass his body and scorch his soul directly 300.
