Background / History

Captivity and escape

Beorn originally lived with his family in the Misty Mountains, where they resisted repeated Half-orc attacks. When Allen established his settlement near Carl Rock, Beorn had not yet been driven from his mountain home 9.

Beorn and his family were eventually captured. Bolg, son of Azog, escorted the prisoners through mountain tunnels toward Orc Town, intending to put Beorn’s kin on display. Beorn escaped by strangling a jailer who had rolled close to his cage while asleep, then taking his key. Bolg pursued him with Warg Riders, severely wounded him, and watched him fall into a river below a cliff 15 16.

Villagers recovered Beorn from the water, and Jeremus treated him at Wilderness Village’s hospital. There, Beorn recognized Klethi’s sapphire pendant as a gift his younger brother had given his daughter. His brother’s entire family had been abducted by mounted Half-orcs a year earlier. Beorn returned the pendant to Klethi and asked her to care for it 15.

Rescue of his family

Although still heavily wounded, Beorn intended to leave immediately to rescue his family. Allen offered help and assembled more than a hundred fighters. Beorn supplied knowledge of the tunnels and the prisoners’ route, allowing the party to move ahead of Bolg’s convoy and prepare an ambush in a narrow river channel 15.

During the battle, Beorn transformed into a giant bear and broke through the Half-orc ranks. His anger drew him away from Allen’s formation toward Bolg, but the sight of Bolg’s Giant Net frightened him back to his allies. He then fought alongside Allen’s troops and disrupted a Warg Rider charge by swinging a Warg’s body through the channel 17.

Klethi freed five Skin-changers—three adults and two children—along with three Dwarves and two Elves. The adult Skin-changers later transformed and blocked Bolg’s retreat, though he ultimately escaped. Allen’s party brought Beorn’s family safely out of the mountains 16 17 18.

Settlement and alliance

Unable to return safely to the Misty Mountains, Beorn accepted Allen’s invitation to become his neighbor. He requested some distance between their homes because his clan’s way of life differed from that of ordinary humans. Allen offered a large oak forest near Wilderness Village 19.

Beorn’s clan settled in the grove and built their home themselves. He declined Allen’s offer of additional workers, explaining that his people preferred homes made with their own hands. Allen subsequently prohibited villagers from entering or hunting on the clan’s land without permission 23.

Beorn offered to share responsibility for southern security with his friend Wulf and to teach practical skills to Allen’s villagers. Both men explicitly understood this as cooperation between friends, not Beorn becoming Allen’s subordinate. The clan’s bear patrols protected travelers and kept Half-orcs away from the village’s immediate surroundings 23 24.

Over the following four or five years, Beorn developed a comfortable homestead with many animals. He introduced Allen to his nearby neighbor Radagast, whose cottage was also hosting Gandalf. His animal training later helped Wilderness Town use draft oxen and packhorses for labor, while his family’s pastries and dairy products broadened the townspeople’s diet 29 44.

Commitment to the Lonely Mountain campaign

When Allen prepared for war at the Lonely Mountain, Beorn volunteered himself and Wulf before Allen could ask. He cited both their friendship and his people’s hatred of Azog. Allen intended for the two to operate alongside the cavalry, with the remaining family members temporarily staying in Wilderness Town 45.

Marian was pregnant, and the campaign might keep Beorn away near the time of childbirth. Beorn therefore asked Allen to arrange Jeremus’s care for her. Allen accepted and discussed their departure time with him 45.

Appearance

  • Human form: Approximately 2.3–2.4 meters tall, with a massive build, thick arms, and a heavy beard 15.
  • At his first meeting with Allen: Disheveled hair, extensive bandaging, and a metal shackle around his left wrist; he required two beds pushed together 15.
  • Bear form: An enormous bear approximately two to three meters tall and nearly four meters long, larger than the three adult Skin-changers who joined him in battle 17.
  • Voice: Deep and rumbling 15.

Personality

Beorn is blunt, decisive, and uncomfortable with formalities. Initially, he struggles to ask a stranger for assistance and repeatedly questions why Allen would risk his life for him. Once convinced of Allen’s goodwill, he expresses gratitude directly and insists on offering meaningful help in return 15 23 45.

His family’s captivity makes him wary and desperate enough to attempt a rescue despite serious wounds. Their recovery lifts a considerable burden from him: he becomes cheerful and talkative, discussing animals, pastries, stories, and ancient poems with Allen 15 19.

Beorn values a self-sufficient life close to nature. He sees little use for accumulating money and takes pride in building his family’s home. He dislikes Dwarves because he considers their mining greedy and potentially disastrous, while admiring the Silvan Elves for their closeness to nature and straightforward manner 23 29.

His hatred of Half-orcs can overwhelm his discipline in combat. In bear form, he abandons the agreed formation to attack Bolg alone; memories associated with the Giant Net abruptly restore his caution 17.

Abilities & Skills

Skin-changing

Beorn can transform into a giant bear through magic unique to his people 15.

  • Transforms within moments, greatly increasing his size and physical power 17.
  • Can fight while injured, though transforming bursts his bandages and reopens wounds; it does not immediately heal them 17.
  • Is vulnerable to Bolg’s Giant Net, a purpose-built restraint reinforced with exceptionally tough silver-colored metal threads 17.

Strength and endurance

His bear form provides overwhelming force against ordinary Half-orcs and Warg Riders 17.

  • Sends roughly a dozen Half-orcs flying in a single collision 17.
  • Tears enemies apart and uses a Warg’s body as an improvised weapon 17.
  • Continues fighting beside Allen after the other combatants become exhausted, despite his existing wounds 17.

Mountain knowledge

Beorn knows the tunnels used by Bolg’s convoy and the habits of its Half-orc escorts 15.

  • Identifies a route that lets the rescuers overtake the prisoners 15.
  • Estimates the convoy’s arrival from the Half-orcs’ preference for traveling at night 15.
  • Provides local knowledge, while Allen handles the ambush’s tactical arrangement 15.

Animal training and homestead skills

Beorn trains domestic animals and shares his clan’s practical knowledge with Allen’s settlement 23 29 44.

  • Keeps trained ponies and dogs at his homestead 29.
  • Trains draft oxen and packhorses to assist with town labor 44.
  • Brews mead; his clan also practices beekeeping, baking, dairy production, farming, and herding 15 23 29.
  • Follows his clan’s vegetarian diet, which excludes animal flesh and blood 23.

Relationships

  • Allen — Rescuer, neighbor, and close friend. Their alliance preserves Beorn’s independence while providing mutual military and practical support 15 19 23.
  • Marian — Wife. Her pregnancy shapes Beorn’s arrangements before joining the Lonely Mountain campaign 23 29 45.
  • Grim — Son. Frequently plays with Klethi 29.
  • Wulf — Friend and fellow Skin-changer; shares southern patrol duties and agrees to accompany him to war 23 45.
  • Klethi — Helps rescue his family and later visits them regularly. Beorn enjoys her company and considers her a lovely, amusing girl 16 29.
  • Jeremus — Physician who treats Beorn and his clan. Beorn trusts his medical skill enough to request his assistance during Marian’s childbirth 15 23 45.
  • Radagast — Nearby neighbor whom Beorn describes as a good, if unusual, man. Beorn introduces him to Allen 29.
  • Bolg — Captor and pursuer; uses the Giant Net against Beorn during the rescue battle 16 17.
  • Azog — Enemy whose actions inspire the clan’s hatred and Beorn’s determination to disrupt his war plans 45.

Notable Quotes

“Allen, our clan believes that a home is more comfortable when we build it with our own hands.” 23

“This isn't just about our friendship. It's also about our people's hatred of Azog. We would be very happy to ruin his plans.” 45

Trivia

  • Allen explicitly regards rescuing Beorn’s family as a change to the lonely fate he remembers from the films 19.
  • The author identifies Beorn’s cruel fate as one of the reasons for writing the novel 22.
