Background / History
Morgoth created the Half-orcs by using darkness to twist the children of Ilúvatar. The narration describes their original purpose as destroying everything beautiful in the world. Allen identifies them as servants of darkness and explains that they are not native to Calradia 4 16.
During the Battle of Moria, the Dwarves devastated Half-orc strongholds from Mount Gundabad to the Long Marshes, driving their enemies back to Moria’s gates in Dimrill Dale. The costly Dwarven victory left few Half-orcs alive in the Misty Mountains, allowing human communities to settle along the eastern slopes 13.
By Allen’s arrival, Half-orc numbers and activity had recovered. Woodland villages were repeatedly discovered and overrun, with the dead eaten by Half-orcs and Wargs and survivors enslaved. Their expansion eventually drove many inhabitants to seek shelter in Allen’s settlement 13 27.
Appearance and Varieties
- Black blood is visible on the severed head Firentis brings back and on Allen’s armor after battle 4 13.
- Azog’s bloodline differs from ordinary Half-orcs in its pale skin, imposing height, and formidable build 16.
- Large, gray-skinned Half-orcs appear among the force encountered near the Golden Iris River; Allen considers their presence evidence of a connection to Dol Guldur 31.
| Variety / Group | Documented traits |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Orcs / Misty Mountains Snaga | Widespread mountain inhabitants. Their equipment is generally poor, and their military discipline is abysmal 4 10 14 28 45. |
| Uruks | Described as a new breed created by Sauron through dark magic late in the Third Age. Comparable in size to ordinary humans, more disciplined, and stronger in battle than ordinary Half-orcs 31. |
| Uruk-hai | Sauron’s magically bred troops at Dol Guldur. Nearly human-sized, obedient, disciplined, and capable of matching ordinary human warriors; sunlight does little to reduce their strength 45. |
| Azog’s bloodline | Exceptional intelligence and cunning, comparable to those of ordinary humans, alongside unusual size and pale skin. The cause of these differences is not established 16. |
Habitat and Society
Territory and Movement
- Misty Mountains: At least tens of thousands inhabit the mountain range’s caves, forests, and interconnected tunnels 11.
- Mount Gundabad: Identified as a northern Half-orc stronghold and the source of Wargs and Warg riders threatening Horse-herding Village 10 44.
- Orc Town: A major underground settlement, ruled by the Orc King, where prisoners can be displayed and slaves traded 14 16.
- Moria: The intended destination of Bolg’s captive convoy after its visit to Orc Town 16.
- Dol Guldur: Receives captives intended as tribute to Sauron and later houses the army Azog organizes for the assault on the Lonely Mountain 5 45.
Ordinary Half-orcs favor cold, dark, damp tunnels and dislike daylight. They generally travel at night and rest during the day, although some still conduct daytime attacks 15 16 24.
Leadership and Internal Conflict
- Fragmented tribes: Their immense population does not form a united force; groups sometimes fight one another over petty disputes 11.
- Tribute obligations: Some tribes openly refuse to pay the Orc King after his defeat by Allen, forcing him to prioritize internal opposition over another attack 14.
- Rule through punishment: Bolg whips jailers and kills several after Beorn escapes, feeding their bodies to Wargs 16.
- Expendable infantry: Bolg uses ordinary Half-orcs to exhaust Allen’s elite troops before committing his Warg riders 17.
- Reputation among tribes: News of the Orc King’s defeat spreads from Orc Town to Mount Gundabad and becomes a widely repeated joke 16.
Treatment of Captives
- Villages are burned, fighting men slaughtered, and surviving elderly people, women, and children taken away as prisoners 5.
- Skin-changers are transported in iron cages for display and amusement 15 16.
- Dwarves and Elves are also enslaved; the rescued Silvan Elves bear extensive scars and severe psychological trauma 16 18.
- Captives may be traded at Orc Town or offered as tribute to Sauron 5 16.
Abilities & Skills
Climbing
Misty Mountains Half-orcs are exceptionally capable climbers 17.
- Scale the cliff above Bolg’s river-channel battle to attack the Woodland Dwellers.
- Force Allen’s ambushers to defend their ledge rather than shoot without opposition 17.
Vision in Darkness
Half-orcs can clearly see Allen and Beorn after the tunnel’s fires fade, while the humans struggle to readjust 17.
- Their sight supports combat in unlit tunnels.
- Their preference for underground travel also keeps ordinary Half-orcs out of direct sunlight 16 17.
Armed Combat
Their forces use melee weapons, bows, mass assaults, and mounted charges, but effectiveness varies substantially by group 11 16 42 45.
- Ordinary troops: Rely heavily on numbers; poor discipline makes organized battle lines a promising countermeasure in Allen’s assessment 28.
- Archers: Threaten defenders on walls and the escaping company inside Orc Town 13 42.
- Uruk-hai: Maintain discipline and fight effectively even in sunlight 45.
- Exceptional commanders: Bolg deploys scouts and reserves, while Allen judges Azog capable of commanding tens of thousands 16 17 24.
Warg Riding
Half-orcs cooperate with Wargs as mounts and battlefield companions 4 16.
- Wargs’ sharp hearing makes a cavalry surprise attack difficult 5.
- Their keen sense of smell exposes Allen’s tunnel ambush and enables pursuit of fleeing enemies 16 18.
- Warg riders can overtake travelers in open country; Furdin’s party cannot outrun them 18.
- Burning Half-orc corpses fills the tunnels with a stench that can confuse the Wargs’ scent tracking 18.
Limitations
- Unstable morale: Ordinary Half-orcs are described as cruel toward the weak but cowardly before powerful enemies. Bolg’s infantry routs after losing more than half its strength, despite riders killing deserters 16 17.
- Weak protection: Light crossbows can inflict lethal wounds on the poorly equipped Misty Mountains Orcs 10.
- Daylight aversion: Ordinary raiders retreat after daybreak; heavy cloud cover allows them to return and attack a village 5.
- Uneven intelligence: The narration portrays most as ignorant and unintelligent, explicitly distinguishing Bolg and Azog’s bloodline as exceptions 16.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Scimitars and wooden clubs — Common melee weapons carried by Bolg’s infantry and Orc Town’s defenders 16 42.
- Bows and arrows — Used in sieges, riverbank harassment, and underground fighting 13 24 42.
- Warg-rider weapons — Better than ordinary Half-orc equipment; Allen suspects many captured examples are Dwarven work 14.
- Iron cages, shackles, and keys — Used to transport and restrain captives 16.
- Giant Net — Bolg’s enormous rope net, entwined with silver metal thread and initially carried by four Warg riders. Deployed against Beorn and later taken by Allen’s party 17 18.
- Crude iron armor — Supplied by Sauron to his Uruk-hai army 45.
- Bolg’s armor — Despite its scrap-metal appearance, it stops many enchanted Noldor Arrows during his final battle 49.
Relationships
- Morgoth — Creator of the race through the corruption of Ilúvatar’s children 16.
- Sauron — Receives captive tribute and creates the magically bred forces assembled at Dol Guldur 5 31 45.
- Orc King / Goblin King — Ruler of Orc Town who demands tribal tribute and orders retaliation against Allen 5 10 14.
- Azog — A capable commander serving Sauron; organizes the army intended to attack the Lonely Mountain 24 45.
- Bolg — Azog’s son, commander of captive escorts and Warg riders, and a recurring opponent of Allen 15 16 49.
- Wargs — Mounts and allies, providing tracking, pursuit, and battlefield support 16 18.
- Allen — Repeatedly defeats their forces, frees their prisoners, and builds settlements defended against their raids 5 13 16 24 44.
- Beorn and the Skin-changers — Enemies whose communities suffer capture and imprisonment; freed Skin-changers help defeat Bolg’s convoy 15 16 17.
- Dwarves — Longstanding enemies, particularly following the Battle of Moria; older members of Thorin’s company retain intense hatred of Half-orcs 13 39.
